the environmental protection agency responded to at least two other cases in nevada in recent years... one here in las vegas... the other in gardnerville in northern nevada back in 2003. and it wasn't just shoes and backpacks... but also everything the kids were wearing that had to come off... and subsequently be destroyed. a firefighter who worked that incident told us it also caused a public backlash. but he believes they would have been criticized had they gone to the extent they did... to make sure none of the kids tracked mercury back home. "people that aren't particularly well versed in what we have to do in order to manage other people in distress jump very quickly to erroneous conclusions and so i would urge people to think twice before figuring that the fire department, the schools, and the other agencies there to protect

what they're doing and are creating mistakes and problems for everybody." the gardnerville incident cost that small town about 100-thousand dollars. police are still looking for the hit and run driver who killed a father of six back in may. they've named qaadir amin a suspect but he's been on the run since the crash.... and the family wants answers. the victim's family reached out to fox5's abby theodros this week - the amin is out of the country on vacation the stampleys have been monitoring his social media accounts because they want to close this case but theyre worried he's out of the country and wont be coming back anytime soon family showed me - they believe qaadir amin went on vacation to the bahamas. this picture was posted on august 29th with nassau

location. the victims son says they wont get any closure until amin is in police custody clay stampley jr.: it makes me very upset because he's able to travel, get on a plane, and stuff and i dont think everyo ne is taking it seriously like my family is we still have no answers. all my family wants is answers. amin is a suspect in the hit and run crash that killed clay stampley juniors dad. stampley senior was on his way to work when the driver in this gmc yukon ran a red light and hit him so hard... he was thrown out of the truck. the suspect took off. i called north las vegas police to check for an update...and they say the case is still open and theyre aware of

police also told fox5 they understand the family is grieving and they are working diligently to bring them justice dozens are protesting outside the bellagio on the strip... in response to the dakota pipeline project. here's a live look right now. the protest was organized by a southern nevada indian tribe. they're standing in solidarity with demostrations in north dakota against the development of an the standing rock sioux reservation. they say the fight is for human rights... clean water... and respect for native american treaties. we spoke to the organizer of the protest. she says the pipeline is an environmental issue for the tribe and the nation. "we're asking people to stand up in solidarity to let standing rock know were here we support them it isnt only paitute tribute but so many antiona we have lakota crow tribe najavo and it goes on and

organizers say they're passing around petitions for people to sign. more protests will also be planned in the future here in las vegas. the group says they will also travel to north dakota -- for "indigenous peoples day" on october tenth. a huge change is coming to the nation's fifth largest school district... today -- a plan to reorganize the clark county school district was approved... an already starting work to put the plan in place. now instead of the district deciding on school budgets, each individual school will have a volunteer board -- which will set its school's budget. superintendent pat skorkowsky says the change will give parents an opportunity to be more directly involved in their child's school. "they dont have to be an organizational team member to be engaged in your children's school, there's so many levels of engagement right now that parents can look forward

unanimously, but lawmakers had some concerns about how open the volunteer meetings will be and how schools will make sure parents are involved. the amount of money given to each school will be decided by a formula based on the number of students at the school. new at six... the college of southern nevada wants to help hundreds of stranded students from i- t-t technical institute. this comes after i-t-t closed all of its campuses nationwide on tuesday. c-s-n says they're offering customized plans... support services to get students back on track. assigned specialists at all of their campuses will help students effectively transfer... and complete degree programs. c-s-n says because i-t-t tech is not a regionally accredited institution... many credits cannot transfer to c-s-n. but -- some may transfer through the c-s-n non- traditional education review process. we have a link to all this information on fox five vegas dot com.

are working for fox5 news at ten. three days after the biggest mercury contamination in clark county... families are still trying to figure if they are at risk. how the epa's investigation is now spreading outside the school. one dad is making sure his little girl knows he's thinking of her at school. he's been leaving the cutest post-it notes inside her lunchbox for three years. here's a look at some of those creations... from disney characters to star wars. the father told buzzfeed he the notes when his daughter was four years old. in total -- he's done more than 600 post-it notes. sometimes -- he admits it's hard to come up with different ideas. he's recently done all the disney films in chronological order. there's even an exhibition in london showing off some of his work. his personal favorite is b-b eight in a christmas hat.
