we continue to follow breaking news on fox five news at eleven. a suspected drunk driver causes a crash that leaves a person in critical condition. i'm john huck. i'm christine maddela. the crash has shut down the intersection of charleston and maryland parkway. fox five's cyndi lundberg is live at the scene with more on what happ this crash happenned just after seven. if you look behind me there's a red car that's crumpled around a pole i'm told that car hit the silver car. witnesses told me a man was driving the red car.. a woman was in the passenger seat. the driver was conscious when

ambulance... the woman was not. we spoke to a different person who told us down the street... she was also hit by this same red car... and that car then fled the scene. "the car in the pole is the one that hit me, he took off, headed the oposite direction, hit this poor car over here and this is where he ended up." right now we don't know who was in the silver car that was also involved here or what their condition is... closed captioning

today johnson junior high school students didn't report to class again as decontamination crews tried to make sure the building is mercury-free... but a few dozen students and their parents did show up to school to drop off bags of clothes, shoes... anything that could have been contaminated. this is day three of the school saga. you may remember on wednesday, hazmat crews locked down the school to screen each student for mercury contamination. the last of the students were released around five a-m thursday morning. fox5's miguel martinez valle has been listening to parents frustrations and asking school leaders what they're doing to keep kids safe. some parents say their kids played with mercury last friday, others tuesday... crews didn't start decontaminating the school until wednesday. if exposed students went home with contaminated shoes and clothing... that could potentially spread the contamination to their homes...

" tania babajan's son is one of nine kids exposed to the mercury. she's now worried the rest of her family could get sick. " all of us actually these two- three days, we kinda feel dizzy, and i thought maybe it was because of the fear... im shaking, i have my little one, and i dont know what to do" " so what you do is you contact the school, they will take your informaiton, they will make contact with the epa" " we are reaching out to those parents who are still upset, we are making those phone calls today." " families were asked to put anything they thought contaminated in a plastic bag" " and then take that to the school for testing" " some joggers, a shirt" more than 45 families did just that... " i'm here to get my shoes tested to see if there was any mercury residue on them" " i believe i took my shoes on friday, which is the day they thought the mercury was there" " the clothes that i was wearing the day before the hazmat lockdown. i just wanted to make sure they didnt have mercury on it" " - howd it go? : good

: no - thats good" " yea i'm relieved i didn't want to track mercury everywhere" but the evironmental protection agency kept 10 bags with students' stuff that tested positive for mercury. one of those bags belonged to babajan's son. now the e-p-a will have to check their home... i talked to the babajans today. they told me the epa is heading to their house tomorrow to test for mercury contamination.

you think may be contaminated, you can still drop off bags at johnson middle school this weekend. a gunman is on the run after a person was shot to death during an argument. it happened around eleven a-m at an apartment complex -- near desert inn and maryland parkway. police say the victim was found on a second floor landing. he was taken to the hospital... but died from his injuries. so far -- police say no one has been arrested. anyone with information about this homicide should call police or crimestoppers 7-0-2-3-8-5-55-55. you can leave an anonymous tip. tonight a school continues to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of alyssa otremba... more than five years after her brutal death.... the -- then -- arbor view high school sophomore was kidnapped while walking to a friends house... raped... tortured... and murdered by javier righetti back in 2011. fox-5's vince sapienza was at tonights arbor view football game.. and spoke with members of the family.... he's in the newsroom with

john..christine... i spoke with alyssa's mom.. jennifer...who admits today has was a tough one.... but it was nowhere as emotional as last week..... just seven days ago marked the 5th year anniversary of alyssa's murder... jennifer says as you might imagine.. there are good and bad days.... but on nights like tonight.. it's happy memmories..... shannone paki friend of the family as we say, once an aggie, always an aggie, at this time please pause in remembrance for alyssa otremba....(silence) on a night full of football and fun...the raucous arbor view crowd fell silent for 16 seconds in honor of alyssa otremba. "her life can continue to touch other lives and i miss that face, i see it every single day, i know she is with us, i feel her presents." "i think having a football game like this dedicated to her and honoring her is more of a sense of community, bringing us together to remember we're here for each other."

this sunday marks the 15-th anniversary of the "nine- eleven" attacks. many around the country will honor those who lost their lives that day. palo verde high school will pay tribute to a teacher was killed in the attacks. foreign languages teacher -- barbara edwards -- was a passenger on the american airlines flight 77 -- which crashed into the pentagon. every year -- the school holds a flag re-dedication ceremony to remember her -- as well as the others who lost their lives. "since we are on the west coast you don't really feel as large of an impact as some people who had families and such but being as a teacher here and realizing that we did lose someone on that day, yes, it brings it a lot closer to home." stranded i-t-t technical institute students... after the schools closed nationwide. they'll be offering customized plans to help students ge with their education. hundreds of students were affected in southern nevada. c-s-n says while some credits may transfer... many of them will not because i-t-t was not a regionally accredited institution. they've assigned specialists at all their campuses to help students. we have more information on our website at fox five vegas dot com. just click on the links section. a huge change is coming to the clark county school district. today -- a plan to reorganize the school district was approved... giving more power to the schools. now... c-c-s-d is already starting work to put the plan in place. intstead of the district deciding on school budgets... each individual school will have a volunteer board -- which will set its school's budget. pat skorkowsky says the change will give parents an opportunity to be more directly involved in their child's school. "hopefully the parents will notice the openness that schools will be getting into and will make sure that they're getting involved and getting engaged in their child's work. they dont have to be an organizational team member to be engaged in their child's school" ' the plan passed unanimously... but lawmakers had some concerns about how open the volunteer meetings will be and how schools will make sure
