starts now mercury testing continues at a valley middle school... when school officals hope to resume classes at johnson junior high. plus.. first responders from all over our community--- gather to remember the heroes-- who lost their lives fifteen years ago. we talk to travelers on airport security since 9-11. and take a look at the changes seen all over the country.. since the tragic attacks. we begin fox five news at ten with breaking news. good evening, i'm faith tanner. one person is dead after being hit by a car. this is a live look right now at the scene near torrey pines and alta. police tell us a driver hit a bicyclist... and then hit a home. we're told the driver then took off on foot. police say the victim was taken to u-m-c where... they later died. class is cancelled... once again...

tomorrow. the e-p-a has been working all weekend to decontaminate... and they say one family's been evacuated from their home. fox 5's abby theodros joins us live in the newsroom. abby what did they find this weekend? the epa says they found high levels of mercury in that family's home and had them temporarily evacuate. we talked to some families who also had their items and homes tested...they just want things to get back to normal. (shuffles through bag) josh laen alright so these are my notebooks seventh grader josh langendorf is finally sorting through his things after last week's mercury scare. josh langendorf: my lunch box my shoes my pencils. a lot a lot of stuff. a lot a lot of stuff all of it quarentined until today. abby: you said you have almost everything, except? josh: my bag...my roller back pack. and i think they found traces of mercury on it because its a roller back pack, its on the ground. 80 bags were brought in for

weekend, 60 homes were evaluated, one family asked to temporarily evacuate. nattis: its unclear where it was actually found because it was so high. so we cant pin point that so we're going to do another investigation. randy nattis with the epa couldnt tell us more about the family..but we talked to this mom who says her home was inspected too. kristina langendorf: it was scary because i didnt know what to expect or what they were going to find. her home was in the clear but she still has questions like when will school re-open and where come from? mike barton, chief student achievement officer ccsd: we do believe it was brought in potentially by student. we dont know yet but its under investigation by our school police. ccsd and the epa answered a few of our questions today. including how much mercury theyve recovered so far. randy nattis, epa: upwards of a quarter of a cup to give you some context - the epa's website says youd find about point 61 grams of mercury in a baby thermometer randy nattis, epa: a quarter of a cup

here in las vegas went through. today they remembered that... and all of the lives lost with a ceremony for the fallen. we were scared, literally, because you just thought that something might happen in our community that would affect our people at the same time. (nat bell ring) it was very hectic because at the time, everybody in the united states didn't know what the next target was. there was actually rumors that several other cities were the next target and we didn't know if las vegas was gonna be the next target. we g as quickly as we could. we came up with plans. the aircraft had shut down, there were people stranded. there was talk about our email systems being infiltrated. (nat bell ring) the mayor needed someone to assist story--- is a method firefighters used

throughout this story--- is a method firefighters used to cmu with each other during emergencies. in today's ceremony... they stuck with that tradition-- to honor the firefighters who were killed. firefighters met downtown this evening for a 9-11 tribute. they marched to honor fallen heroes of that tragic day. the las vegas firefighters benefit association started the annual event in 20-03. nearly 4-hundred guests who took part in the march... received an american flag donated by

bag-pipers kicked off the night... before a moment of silence... and supporters marched under a fifty foot american flag. ". its very important to us that we do this every year so that people do not forgett and so they always remeber what a tragic day that was...how important the job of a fire fighter has and how you never know what dangers you're gonna get into." along with the three hundred and forty three firemen who lost their lives 15 years ago... 60 police officers also died on that tragic day. the terrorist ta changed the hearts and minds of many americans. it also impacted security measures across the country--- especially at airports. ask almost anyone where they were on september 11-th 2001... and they can tell you the exact spot. : "i was in gym class " "i remember my parents calling me into my bedroom and watching the second tower get hit" "at first we

accident but then a few minutes later we heard about the second plane and everybody kind of went in panic mode" 15 years later... and the panic mode may be over. but our country is still not the same. : "a lot of stuff has changed in security. airport security, flight security, walking security.." travelers at mccarran international airport say they notice heightened security--- with more checks... and limits on items they can fly with. some people we talked to... say the extra steps make them feel safer. : "it's necessary, i feel it's necessary to keep our country safe" but others feel frustrated that the procedures are sometimes inconsistent. : "i had to check my bag because i had to put facewash in by bag because i couldn't take it with me, but i brought it from here to there, it's kinda confusing because every airport is different" "i feel like there's a lot of profiling when you go through security, like even today, my bag got super checked and there wasn't anything in there"

time in my life." jesse explained the irreverent warriors is meant to boost veterans moral... a modern day mobile v-f-w hall... o' malley says: "a buddy of mine killed himself and i wanted to do something to bring veterans together." donny o' malley is the national founder... he said while it originally started as focusing solely on suicide prevention... its evolved... o' malley says: "the intent is to start the day with a laugh like immediately you see these big dudes with bears and little shorts you can't be serious." each veteran walking 22 kilometers and carrying 22 kilograms in honor of the painfully real daily veteran suicide rate... this weekend extra special... sunday is 15 years since 9/11. o' malley says: "i'd say 90 percent of the people here enlisted into the military because of 9/11..." so, the next time you see a group like this walking down your street... don't run away... give them a proper salute... they've earned it. that was joe saint george reporting.

gophers honor jacob wetterling outside t-c-f stadium in minneapolis. stadium employees handed out thousands of "11 for jacob" stickers... during yesterday's game. that was jacob's favorite number... and also his jersey number. youth teams are also adding the stickers to their uniforms. the minnesota vikings also plan to honor the wetterling family... at their first home game against the green minnesotans say the idea is to celebrate jacob's life... johnson says: "it reperesents a healing process for all the people in mn but especially the family themselves everybody cares about them and wants to support them ..." the remains of eleven year old jacob wetterling were found earlier this month -- nearly twenty- seven years after he was abducted. the lead suspect - daniel heinrick - has pleaded

"it has come to this and we're ready to do what we need to do." kathy holdefer is a first-time protester. her reason to take action? her home of 25 years is on the pipeline route. "across the fence from my house my neighbor's land has been gutted and there's a pipeline in it right now." along with hundreds of other protesters...holdef er went to pilot mound, iowa to do somethin "this is what it's all about! this is what democracy looks like." signs held high...shouts of frustration drowned out the sounds of pipeline construction... meanwhile, one-by- one people were arrested for standing in the way of construction vehicles trying to get to the site.
