into possible bed bugs at the restaurant in the silver nugget casino. i'm john huck. i'm christine maddela. right after we ran the story with a woman who claims she was bitten... the restaurant closed it's doors. now... the restuarant is back open and the investigation has wrapped up... fox5's kathleen jacob is live at the silver nugget... and kathleen... you said many more people have come forward with similar claims.. right? that's right christine.. john... but before i get to that... we've ju gotten the report from the health department on the inspection... health district inspectors did find 3 to 4 live insects and at least one dead one under a booth in the restuarant. they also found them in and under cracks in the carpet and they found them crawling on the floor. the report says they also found them on the wall... but only around the one booth indicated in the complaint. today i've spoken with at least half a dozen people who have similar stories. one woman... kayla reese... says bed bugs got her kicked out of her apartment.

disappointed. i really thought they were a nice place. we used to go there on date nights. i'm just really disappointed. kayla reese and her fiance used to love eating at the home town kitchen inside the silver nugget. that is... until she says their home became infested with bed bugs. i remember sitting there one time and my fiance was like "why do you keep itching yourself? and i was like i don't know it just itches." didn't even think about it. when her home became infested.. two seperate times... she thought it was a apartment at cabana park apartments. i realized that we got them again and i was like... uh i don't know what's going on. so then i thought it was the apartment. the manager of the apartment complex says she stopped paying rent because of the problem... and that's when they evicted kayla. i went through a lot of stress, a lot of missing work, my daughter being sick. my daughter was sick almost every month and i didn't understand why. these bite marks on her daughter... match the bite marks barbi stenstrom says she got while eating at the silver nugget.
6:03 pm
post... she immediately made the connection of the bed bug outbreak... and the times she ate at the silver nugget. my fiance was sitting next to me and he was like 'oh my gosh' i've eaten there so many times, and i was like "ahhh" it made like a connection and i was like that's totally where we got them from. kayla plans to file a claim with the casino and the health department. i also went into the silver nugget and spoke with a manager today. i told him the story was running tonight at 5 and we would love to share their side of the story... i left him my contact information and he still has not contacted me. reporting live... kathleen jacob... fox5 news... local las vegas.

session at walter johnson jr. high today kids were back in class six days after mercury was found on the school's campus. the clark county school district says since then, crews have decontaminated the school. but e-p-a officials are still looking for traces of mercury at at least one home. fox5's eric hilt joins us now near durango and alta, with what this family now has to do. right now crews are going through this house, ripping up carpet, finding things that are contaminated with mercury and then throwing them in this red bin you see there -- everything that is contaminated will be destroyed. this is the only home where the epa found high

similar to what they found in the school - 10 to 15 times higher than what's considered safe. epa officials told me they think the contamination came from johnson middle school "we believe that mercury got on some of the child's and it got transferred to the home that way" many of the parents told me they are confident the school is safe and they are happy their kid is back in school. but some say they still have a lot of unanswered questions about this whole incident. nats -- school? school is back in session at johnson jr. high... "im glad to be back learning stuff and

but it's hardly back to normal. "i'm certainly conflicted about it but i know she needs to get back to school" parents dropped off their kids for the first time since quarter of a cup of mercury was found on the campus -- and some say six days later -- they still have questions "i want some clarity on the amount?" "why did it take so long for them to communicate what was going on?" "there's plenty of questions, but im glad they took the precautions they did to make sure the kids are safe" we got a look at some of those precautions taken inside the school's the gym -- where ccsd says the mercury was found and the area the epa said had the highest levels of contaminatio-- to 15 times higher than the levels considered safe for kids. during the clean-up, workers took out a chunk of the gym floor. "crews also ripped up the carpeting that was right here at the entrance of the gym, saying that students may have tracked the mercury onto it as well" "many of those areas were removed for procautionary measures to make sure that we removed any material that potentially could be contaminated" as for what all that clean up work will cost? -- ccsd says it

pricetag just yet. "we're working with our insurance and risk management department to see how much that will cost and what is potentially covered " last wednesday students had to turn over their shoes, socks and backpacks for testing before they went home. 100 parents brought additional items for testing... out of all of that, 53 items were kept by the epa and will be destroyed -- ccsd says parents can file a claim with the district to get refunded. it's a federal program meant to help homeowners who are about to lose their homes... the troubled asset relief program... or tarp ... gave money to homeowners in the 19 states hardest hit by the recession...
6:08 pm
but fox5 uncovered a recent audit by the special inspector generals office . it found that a large part of those funds weren't being given to homeowners in need... fox5's miguel martinez valle dove in to the 50 page audit to tell us what he found. this is that audit...and in its more than 50 pages it shows that in just two years the number of homeowners allowed into this program fell by 94 percent... and even though the company kept taking tarp money from the government... as you can see in this chart... they were turning away a lot more people for assistance than they were accepting the company is called nevada affordable housing assistance corporation. the state hired them to distribute tarp funding to homeowners in need. except in 2015... a little more than 491 thousand dollars actually went to homeowners, but the company expensed more than 660 thousand. and they only admitted 117 people into the

what'd they spend the rest of the money on? well the audit shows the company instead spent the money on an employee winter social, a holiday luncheon, gift cards... among other things. sigtarp, the company conducting the audit did make reccomendations to the state... they reccomended that nahac stop getting hhf dollars.... and that they stop working on this program all together. they also reccomend the treasury get repayed 8.2 million dollars in abused money. i'm still waiting on the response

jim dunlap: too many nevada police officers have been killed in the last few years. the truth is, we make it too easy for criminals and the dangerously mentally ill to buy guns. they get them at gun shows or online from strangers, no questions asked. so here's something we can do to honor the fallen: close the background check loophole. that will help prevent future cop killings. that have closed the loophole, nearly half as many police officers have been shot and killed in the line of duty. background checks save lives.
