police staffing hasn't kept up. unlv is looking for a brand update... and that includes giving mascot "hey reb" a new look. the university says it freshens up "hey reb" every decade or so. "hey reb" is a nevada rebel or mountain man... but some feel his name and likeness is too close to a confederate soldier. most students told unlv in a survey they are not offended by the popular mascot. university president len jessup says hey reb was due for a makeov " jessup: " we will do the refreshing in a way that we make sure it doesn't affect anyone with the conotations that some people felt the prior images had..." an architectual experiment is taking place in france. a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed this week - by a police officer in columbus, ohio. now - the officer is on administrative leave - and the boy's family is calling for a fair investigation. "there is inherent bias in the police investigating themselves, and we have an issue with this being a 13- year-old child and the call nationally already for a transparent investigation into this shooting." it happened late wednesday night. police were responding to an armed robbery call ... involving three suspects. officers chased

that's when one of them... 13 year old tyree king pulled out a b-b gun that is a replica of a police weapon. "we found the gun at the scene near the suspect that we were trying to apprehend and this is what the gun looks like." that's when one of the officers shot the boy - killing him. the mayor is calling for a thorough investigation. the family of the boy claim he had no prior criminal history. a zika virus vaccine might be found in philadelphia. pharmaceuticals" has teamed up with a doctor from the wistar institute... the hope is creating a safe vaccine to battle the zika virus. this shot is now being tested in forty people as a step towards getting approval from the food and drug administration. this vaccine is a little different as it is fully synthetic - created entirely on a computer.. researchers say this can prepare the body in case it is infected with the zika virus at a later date.

"patriot paws service dogs" is a non-profit organization in texas that trains service dogs for military veterans. jennifer kendall shows us how the group is making a difference for our american heroes. lori stevens has been saving lives with the help of her four legged friends for more than a decade now. stevens says: "back in 2005 i met some disabled veterans at the dallas va and they were trying to train their own dogs and they asked for help i'd been training service dogs for years with another organization and it just touched my heart " stevens- who had a veteran father and a son headed to his first deployment- had a soft spot for those who've served. and that's when she had the idea to start a nonprofit that trains service dogs for disable veterans. stevens says: "i knew that dogs could make a difference in your life " lori founded patriot paws in 2006 with four

stringer says: " we've placed dogs with veterans from the wwii our oldest veteran was 89 when he got his dog to present day wars the youngest veteran was 22" now more than 100 vets are in line to get a dog from her organization. stevens says: "there's a lot of veterans that need it now today " there have been some struggles along the way... training the service dogs takes 2-5 years. that's a long time for someone who can't find the strength to face the world. stevens says: " there are truly nights that i go home and i worry about a veteran all night long what am i gonna do about this guy we have a long waiting list " while they wait, veteran outreach coordinators check in with them, invite them to events and offer to have them volunteer at the facility. mixell says: "that 2 years is a long time so we get on the phones we call them i just wanted to see how your day was sometimes the difference between being barricaded and suicide is somebody saying i care " 08:35:13;00 it's become a big veteran family the dogs start trainging at just 8- 10 weeks of age. nat hi baby girl you ready to come play
