live from las vegas fox5 news at 6 starts now. three possible terror attacks-- rattle the country over the weekend. what locals have to say about safety and security around our city. n-dot has their hands full with freeway work on the i-15 freeway.... with the spaghetti bowl ramp back open... crews break ground to widen another stretch of the road. police need your help finding a driver involved in a hit and run... the damage they caused and the clues to find the suspect. 6. local. las vegas isis has claimed responsibility for the attack in minnesota. and with all the recent violence - we wanted to know... how safe are we here in a big tourist destination like las vegas? fox5's kathleen jacob joins us live from the strip. kathleen what did you find out? christine... john... i found out that we are actually more safe here than in other big cities...

both locals and tourists... all seemed to feel pretty safe... despite the recent attacks. (nats elvis interacting with tourists) mark rumpler has lived and worked right on the strip for more than a decade now. i'll tell you what, i keep an eye out on every, cause we have tourists and stuff, i watch a lot, and i have to say our police in the city are probably as good as any police i've ever seen. they're everywhere and they're really keeping an eye on stuff. it's why he's confident the

it comes to terrorism. one day last summer a man attacked the people, the tourists with a knife... and i helped to stop him...the police were here in one minute... and i swear it's because of the surveillance. and that suveillance is second to none... there's barely an inch of the city that the cameras don't capture. but... police want citizens to be on alert as well. what does a terrorist look like? what does a criminal look like? there really is no picture for that, it's based on their behavior and the things that they do prior to the act and of course after the fact. we run down every lead to the ground to determine wh there are additional things the police or the government can do to prevent a terrorist act. they say... look out for people who are suspiciously filming things, asking specific security questions, and testing security limits, my first time here and i felt a little bit worried, but when i arrive i felt very, how can i say secure? paloma pereiera was a little worried traveling to las

recent attacks on our country. but as soon as she arrived... that fear vanished. the police, they're on every side of the road, the city, i just felt very... (nods). and to the cities that were recently attacked? they have to be really strong and have faith and i hope everything will be okay, i pray for them. our local police haven't made any changes since the attacks this past weekend. but just a reminder... we do have a joint terrorist task force here in las vegas... they're always working to stay one step ahead of any possible attacks. a two-year project is underway - to improve a busy stretch of interstate 15 near the motor speedway. a ceremony to kick off the renovations was held today at the speedway - by local lawmakers - and the nevada department of transportation. the 34-million dollar plan will widen five miles of the four lane
6:04 pm
travel lanes in each direction. crews will also improve four overpasses, upgrade drainage and install new lights, signs and landscaping. it impacts the whole community. because whether you're traveling northbound or southbound, you're going to have so much more space, in which to maneuver. and that means fewer backups. it's good certainly for the enviornment and it's good all the way around for peope who want to move efficiently thoughout the valley. the work zone is near north las vegas - abou congested spaghetti bowl interchange. a separate project $1 billion effort called project neon caused the closure of a ramp from u.s. 95 to i-15 during the weekend. that project will widen the congested i-15 section between sahara avenue and the spaghetti bowl. it was another hot one today....but could there be chances for a cool down later this week? maybe even a chance for showers? let's check in with fox five's chief meteorlogist ted pretty with a look at the forecast. our weather will

"this is where patients will be admitted into the emergency department and the hospital is designed in a way to get them from this waiting room in to see a medical professional as soon as possible - whether it be in one of these rapid exam rooms, inside the emergency department's internal waiting room or in one of their standard exam rooms" "it's kind of a new concept as far as where we can move people when we run out of bed space that is appropriate for their care" nats -- mounting tvs again but as those finishing touches go up -- directors are eying new challenges... "it's hard to decide how many nurses i need to bring in when i really don't know what the volume is" but say they're ready finally open it's doors. eric hilt, fox5 news local las vegas the hospital is holding hiring fairs in the next few weeks to get ready for it's opening. you can find more
