community " it is the hardest to get tickets in las vegas, and it's a reallys pecial opportunity for some students to be able to see this event that only a handfull of americans have ever had the opportunity to see and participate in" i'll be out here as more students gather just in time to tune in and watch . from unlv miguel martinez valle fox 5 news local las vegas a declined card for a coffee shooting that left one man dead. this evening that man has yet to be identified... but the shooter is behind bars. police say 34- year-old pedro garcia tried to order through the drive thru of the starbucks at rainbow and warm springs sunday morning... but his card was declined. that's when they say he walked into the store... got into an argument
4:02 pm
fired two shots in the air... and then one at the customer, who died. police say garcia called them giving a different description of the shooter. that led police to believe there may have been more than one gunman... and it could be a possible hostage situation. the shooter also told police he had an explosive in his backpack... prompting an evacuation of neighboring businesses. turns out there wasn't an explosive... and this wasn't a hostage situation. just one man with a gun. fox5's kathleen jacob is l starbucks... where police are still investigating. kathleen? cindy, john... the starbucks is closed today... but i was able to see detectives working and collecting evidence through the windows. at this point we know... 34-year-old pablo garcia should not have had a gun. police say he did have a criminal record. here's a picture of him from a
4:03 pm
came out of the starbucks and police arrested him for a slew of charges. open murder.. robbery with a deadly weapon... burglary with a deadly weapon... and discharging a gun into a structure. witnesses tell us they dropped to the ground and were eventually evacuated through the back. it's something that community members are shocked about... especially here in this neighborhood. it's pretty sad, it's scary, we just moved over here to to this side of town. i couldn't believe it cause it's close to home. like my kid goes to school right over here and then we live up the street so it's just kind of crazy that something like that can happen over that kind of incident you know a declined card. we still don't know the identity of the victim... all we know is he was a male customer in his 40s. police do not think he and the shooter had any sort of relationship.
4:04 pm
still closed but should be open tomorrow... and of course we'll update you guys as soon as the coroner identifies the victim. reporting live...kathleen jacob... fox5 news... local... las vegas. if you see something...say something... that's the message henderson parents and police are reminding their kids now.. more than ever. just last week... police received two reports of strangers approaching children who were on their way home from school.... both in henderson. fox-5's vince sapienza spoke with henderson police regarding and is in the newsroom with which schools were involved in those reports ..... john...cyndi... the word police are using to describe the reports made last week regarding possible luring cases...is being called unsubstantiated.... ... now that doesn't mean police are saying it didn't happen... it just means they have been unable to corroborate the story....
4:05 pm
occured last tuesday at mannion middle school.... where one parent tells fox-5 his son was nearly abducted by a man driving near the school... another incident occured on wednesday...when a girl was walking home from greenspun junior high.... and a reported man in a green van slowed down to try and talk to her... she tried to run away...but he followed... it wasn't until the girl began to cry that he drove away... henderson p-d tells me since august 1st they have had 10 different cases they would classify as "luring" i'm told their is no pattern to any of the reports.... and each are being investigated on their own merit... "we do have predators, we know that and it's important for parents to recognize it's nto the way it was 30, 40, 50 years ago, we have to be vigilant with our children." police say all the cases and reports are still open.. and being investigated... police say one of the best ways to prevent your kids from being prey is if they do have to walk home on
4:06 pm
in large groups.. another way if for parents to teach kids what to look for in those situations...as well as the importance.. of 9- 1-1... everyone has a cell phone these days... police say descriptions.. of car.. color... how tall.. how fat...any and every detail is vital... from the newsroom.. im vince sapienza..fox5 news..local.. las vegas.. police are asking for the community's help.... if you know anything about last weeks events... or any other incidents...to please contact authorites..with any and all information. there is about an hour and a half left... until the first presidential debate! and it is a thrilling scene at hofstra university. we'll get a live update from new york, as the university prepares to host one of the most watched events of 2016! the global gaming expo is in town.... and there's a special training going just for
