this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. the federal government declared a state of emergency for three southwest coastal states - as hurricane matthew barrels closer. i'm john huck i'm christine maddela. the deadly category four storm already hit the caribbean--- now it's moving up florida's atlantic coast. you can see the storm is packing a punch-- with 140 mile per hour winds and heavy rain. and officials are not taking any chances--- and officials are not taking any chances--- " "if you're in an evacuation zone and you're watching this evacuate. evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. don't take a chance. time is running out there is no excuses not to evacuate. " roughly two million people have been forced from their homes in florida...georgia... and south carolina... it's the largest mandatory evacuation since superstorm sandy

already devastating parts of the caribbean... nearly 300 people killed.. most of them in haiti. and more than one official is warning people--- they could join that toll if they don't follow evacuation orders. "the las vegas aces" were devastated when their coach's car was stolen-- along with all their cheer equipment inside. viewer-- "marshaun winston"-- saw the story and decided to donate all new poms poms to the team. marshaun told the coach to do something special with their gofundme money... so the aces are also getting a new sound system! the new poms should arrive soon. the nevada national guard paid a visit to rancho high school to teach a lesson about anti-bullying. the guards and school board trustee-- kevin child-- lead discussions about how to properly respond to bullies. they also introduced the teens the army's core values-- loyalty... honor... respect... duty... courage... selfless service...

hillary clinton will go head to head in the second presidential debate... it's this sunday at washington university in st. louis. the third and final debate will be held here at the thomas and mack on wednesday october 19th. police make an arrest in a weekend murder... after they say the suspect left his wallet at the scene. james farr is accused of killing chad shelton on saturday, then ransacking his home. according to an arrest report... farr broke into the home and stole a sh police say farr used that shotgun to shoot shelton and then took off in a stolen car. shelton's roommate found his body, and called police. when police arrived, they found a wallet on the kitchen floor. inside was james farr's driver's license. farr is now facing murder and grand larseny charges. the officer injured in a shootout in kingman last week--- has been released from the hospital. officer dennis gilbert was shot-- while executing a search warrant at a home. this is body cam video from the

opened the door holding a gun... and then shot at police... they returned fire. cave died on the scene. a st. louis county police officer is shot and killed while responding to an early morning disturbance call. officer blake snyder arrived on the scene and asked the teen suspect inside a vehicle to show his hands... " as officer snyder approached the suspect's vehicle, at least one shot was fired and struck and fatally wounding officer snyder. officers say they were called just before five a-m-- when 18-year-old trenton forster was trying to get into a home. he immediately shot officer snyder. another officer at the scene then shot forster-- hitting him several times. forster-- has already been charged. he is hospitalized in critical condition. officer snyder was a four year veteran of the department. he leaves behind a wife and two- year-old son. community

remembering a los angeles area police officer who was killed in the line of duty. sergeant steve owen worked for the lancaster sheriff's department for nearly 30 years. he was killed while responding to a burglary call. the suspect-- identified as trenton lovell shot owen five times... and then tried to drive off in the sergeant's patrol car-- but another deputy on scene opened fire. lovell was then arrested. we are learning more about the moments before the transit train slammed into a platform in hoboken. the naon transportation safety board-- says the train accelerated just before the crash information from recording devices on the train-- show that it was moving at eight- miles-per-hour 38 seconds before the crash. then it sped up to 21-miles-per-hour before hitting a platform at the hoboken terminal. officials say the engineer put on the emergency brake less than a second before the collision. one person was killed.... and more than 110 others were injured. the home of the greatest--- could

state lawmakers will meet monday morning to vote on funding for a nfl stadium .... some had hoped that lawmakers would also vote on a new funding source for education savings accounts. those accounts would let parents use state money to pay for private nevada supreme court ruled they can't be funded with money designated for public schools.. parents hoping for a tweak to that program will have to wait until next year.. travis says... a special session to address the building of a stadium for people who already make millions of dollars per year? he deleted the discussion of school resource shortages that will have a negative impact on our kids future. even if the nfl approves the move it will take more than another year

through yet another year of shortages. rosie says... so they cut educational spending from the special session! no wonder why nevada is 49 in education. our elected officials could care less about educating our children and retaining teachers. they need to get their priorities in order. this is a real slap in the face to our children and teachers. take a good look at the new las vegas logo.... do those diamonds in the top right... the hypocycloids... look familiar? they do to billie the new las vegas sign or logo whichever one it is, the three stars on it reminds me of the steelers logo. i think its silly. i just want to say in regards to the new logo, i hope they didn't pay a lot of money for it because if they did, they got taken, seriously taken. if that's the best that anybody offered or if that's the best that the city of las vegas chose, then that's pathetic .

i was in the school zone in front of basic high school and had a clark county school district bus passed me. it was in the wrong lane to turn into the school. once the crosswalk was clear, the bus sped pass the cars in the right hand lane to make its turn into the school. school busses need to start following the rules of the road. i am so sick and tired of this people throwing lit cigarettes out their cars like they think the las vegas streets is their own personal ashtrays. have some consideration people! to the terrible story we told you wednesday about a cat that was found tortured and hung on the side of a fence.. kennedy says... i live in the neighborhood where that poor cat was hung. not only does it makes me sick that a person could be so cruel, but it is quite worrisome knowing this happened in my neighborhood. there are a lot of stray cats that roam around, so this person needs to be caught before it either happens again. and finally anita says...
