fox5 news at 10 starts now a woman-- out for a jog-- attacked in broad daylight. how neighbors came to her rescue.. and help put someone behind bars. the rivalry between two valley high schools has gone too far... what centennial hills and arbor view high schools are now doing to prevent more brawls from breaking out. lawmakers are gathering in carson city... to talk about the funding of a stadium here in the valley.... what went down in day one of the special session. this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. someone attacked a jogger in broad daylight... near a popular valley park. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. the suspect is now in custody. but a henderson neighborhood is still on edge. fox 5's faith tanner joins us after she talked to neighbors about what happened. the attack happened in the middle of the afternoon-- near a popular park... i ran into several people tonight---

jogging there. they say it's hard to believe what happened... and it's left them feeling uneasy. : "right on the road or right around here especially with all the people around that's pretty shocking" jogger, alison elliott is shocked to hear a woman was attacked here last week--- near green valley ranch while out jogging. elliot and her daughters walk this same path several times a week. green valley has really nice sidewalks they're away from the road and it feels really nice henderson police say the attack happened in the middle of the afternoon-- around 4.... here near paseo verde and desert shadow. 23-year-old michael mattingly is behind bars in connection to the assult. neighbors tell us they came home and saw police tape near the road. they thought there had been a car crash. "came back home, there was police tape already there and some police cars on the side and some police men around, we weren't sure what it was about" witnesses say

victim.. bleeding on the sidewalk and being kicked. and say mattingly ran away from the scene-- and then tried to carjack a driver who stopped to help the woman. we reached out to that woman--- who doesn't want to be identified. she says she's still very shaken up... and told us this: "this went from one minute thinking i was approaching someone who saw her hit by a car and thought he could help to him turning violent, attempting to pull me from my car and trying to take off in my vehicle" tonight the park across the street from the attack... was busy with families as well as other runners those we talked to... say this won't stop them from coming out here... but it does have them on edge. "it's not going to prevent me from walking, but i think i will be a little more cautious." mattingly is

in bodily harm... attemped robbery... and violation of probation. mattingly's bail is set at 150- thousand dollars. we don't know the extent of the victim's injuries-- but the witness we talked to... says the jogger... who was attacked... is still in the hospital. state route 160 heading toward pahrump is finally back open tonight. a deadly crash shut it down for hours today. investigators tell us a fully loaded dump truck was coming down the hill and its breaks went out... with no where to pull over because of construction .. the out of control truck slammed into a car .. and then tore through an r-v ... killing the elderly man and woman inside. the truck and r-v ended up in pieces on the side of the road. emergency crews rushed the two other drivers to the hospital. they're expected to recover. the man and woman killed in the crash were

kevin will be live out in front of the legislature tomorrow morning... starting at 6 a-m. a local high school rivalry .. taken too far friday. massive fights broke out after the football game between the centennial hills bull dogs and arbor view aggies. today -- the investigation into who was involved in the fight continues. fox5's miguel martinez valle is live where that fight happened. miguel, have police arrested anyone? officers have not arrested anyone yet. the fight happened off school property. it started at the rasing caines and then spilled over to this in n out parking lot. both schools are working with police to identify students involved... these are high school students...

school district is inviting parents and students to see what really goes on behind the scenes of the lunch rooms at valley schools.. the district is launching free tours of it's food service warehouse to celebrate "national school lunch week" attendees get to see how items are selected and even get to taste-test some of the new options. the director of food services says they are trying to bring in healthy options-- but also make the food enjoyable for the students. last night in st. louis was on donald trump's crude comments in a recently released video. : "certainly i'm not proud of it. but that was something that happened." hillary clinton/(d) presidential nominee: "i think it's clear it to anyone who heard it, it represents exactly who he is.") " both candidates came out swinging last night... the town hall format-- gave voters a chance to ask the questions about foreign policy and the economy. and both- clinton and trump claimed victory following the debate. while last night's debate wasn't as widely watched-- as the first debate.... voters around the valley are weighing in.... i wish they'd get more off the personal issues with each other and start talking about what they're gonna do for the country. we are now nine days away from the final debate--- at the thomas and mack... and set-up at unlv is already underway.... students say parking at the unversity is already a problem... now these preps-- are making finding a spot-- even worse. half the parking lot in front of thomas and mack.. is closed off to workers... starting friday .... the tropicana lot, the n lot and the remaining spots at the thomas and mack-- will be off limit to students. unlv is helping students out by opening up 58- hundred alternative parking sps. half of those are at mccarran airport where a shuttle will pick students up and take them to and from campus. some students say the inconvenience is worth it in the long run. it all started around eight a-m at a home near the stratosphere. police tell us a man barricaded himself inside a home with a woman who said he beat her. just after 4:30 this afternoon, police arrested the suspect and took him into custody. people in palm springs are paying their respects to two officers who were killed over the weekend. " 35- 43 lee says: "i really don't know these people, it's just from hearing what happened to them... just breaks my heart." first degree murder charges are expected to be filed tomorrow... against 26-year old john felix. police say he shot two officersafter they responded to a domestic disturbance call at his palm springs home. he had reportedly told his father he wanted to kill cops. a vermont high school is grieving after five students were killed in a wrong-way crash. " "these were all terrific young students that have been taken from us way too early and far too soon." " the crash

police say the teens were hit by a pick-up truck-- driving the wrong way. the truck had hit several other cars as well. when an officer arrived on the scene--- someone jumped in his cruiser and took off with the lights flashing. when the suspect hit a roadblock-- he turned around... and drove back-- crashing into his pick-up truck. the cruiser burst into flames -- and the suspect was taken into custody. service is up and running-- at part of the hoboken commuter station-- where a train slammed into a platform. eight of the seventeen at hoboken terminal are reopen. tracks one through nine will remain out of service until further notice. one woman was killed when the commuter train slammed into the busy train station on september twenty-ninth. more than one hundred others were injured. investigators say the train sped up and was going twice the speed limit just before the crash. the national transportation safety board is launching an investigation... after a train derailed in new york over the weekend. 33 people were injured-- including seven employees when the train side-swiped a track maintenance
