this week one veteran got a big veterans day gift... mark kleckner has been struggling with an knee injury for decades... he got the injury while serving on base in the army during the korean war, and now he cant walk or stand for long periods of time. but this week the newly formed las vegas chapter of the korean war veterans association gave mark a wheelchair...a gift that he told me will change his life. "when we heard that i was chosen, we became totally elated, it was a time to toast champagne, it was that kind of elation, it felt great" closed captioning

coming up in the next half hour we'll tell you more about aviation nation-- and how you can get in on all the action this weekend. a woman is found shot dead in her home-- and three days later-- no one has been arrested. police are still looking into the case as a possible homicide-- but say it could have also been self defense. police say the 47- year-old was found tuesday night in a home near centennial parkway and lamb. coming up on fox5 news at 530.... we'll hear from neighbors who say they're just surpirsed to hear what happenened-- especially since they say no one heard the gunshots one of las vegas' longest standing traditions-- the rock n' roll marathon kicks off tomorrow. this marathon and new years eve festivities ar the only events that shut down the las vegas strip. soon-- more than 40 thousand runners from all over the country... and the world will take over the strip. the race takes an entire year to plan and is an all hands on deck effort.

toss to weather skies stay mostly clear for your friday night with temperatures in the 60s this evening. overnight low temperatures fall back into the 50s. a system moving into the pacific northwest will bring increasing cloud cover across southern nevada on saturday. we won't see any rain, and temperatures will remain on the mild side with high temperatures in the mid to low 70s. sunday will bring more sunshine with highs in the mid to upper 70s. monday and tuesday will stay warm and mostly sunny with upper 70s. a cold front moving in wednesday will bring gusty wind with temperatures falling back into the low 70s. much colder air invades thursday and friday with highs only in

closed for several hours-- a water main burst near paradise and desert inn. this morning crews shut down the southbound lanes near the convention center. the water main break was fixed and service was restored about half an hour ago. the water district says traffic crews will still have to remove barriers in the southbound lanes. they did not give a time on when that will happen. a disbarred las vegas lawyer will spend up to seven years behind bars-- for stealing more than 140 thousand dollars from her former clients. jeanne winkler will serve at least two and a half years in prison before she's eligable for parole. a district court judge blamed the former lawyer's actions on greed. winlker pleaded guilty in may to felony theft. she also pleaed guilty in 20-12 to a federal consipiracy charge in a scheme to defraud las vegas homeowners associations. police tell fox5 a deadly head-on

medical episode. officers tell us a car crossed the north lanes of valley view near sahara-- and hit another vehice. it happened around 9 a-m. when first responders got there, one driver was unconscious. they had to break a window to get the man out. crews rushed the man to the hospital where he later died. the other woman involved in the crash is cooperating with police. right now-- police are looking into the crash as a medical episode. now to the transition of presidential power... people took to the streets to protest the election results in more than 2- dozen cities-- and the president-elect took notice. dianne gallagher reports from washington. the trump transition is underway. friday morning in new york, donald trump met with his team in private to keep planning his new administration - where vice president-elect mike pence was tapped to take over the transition... and sources say republican national committee chair reince preibus is now the leading contender to serve as chief of staff. the political world is focusing on the

natsound - protest - "we resent the president elect" but thousands of americans are still not happy. protestor / no name provided - "this is what happens when you elect a facist, racist, bigot." for the second night, large protests broke out in at least 25 cities. the majority of these marches against the election results remained peaceful. but at least 185- people were arrested in los angeles. and in portland, oregon... natsound - flash bang police say t a riot when people smashed business windows and started fires in the streets. trump took notice, tweeting "just had a very open and successful presidential election. now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. very unfair!" by this morning, the president-elect appeared to have a change of heart... "love the fact that the small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country. we will all come together and be proud!" a message echoed by the president during his final veterans day speech in office - president obama / no font needed "the american instinct has never been to find isolation in opposite corners. it is to find strength in our common creed."

this is a live look right now at protests in atlanta we've been telling you about protests errupting around the country since election night. there have been protests at high schools....universi ties and in cities around the country. a state judge in reno is making their way to the nevada supreme court. governor brian sandoval announced he is appointing district court judge lidia stiglich-- she will fill the remaining two years of former justice nancy saitta's term. stiglich has the

rating and performance score of judges in her district. the governor says stiglick also co-founded a youth offender drug court to help juvenile offenders struggling with underlying problems of drug abuse. she will be sworn in on january second. voter turnout this year dipped to nearly its lowest point in two decades, according to the latest tallies. while election officials are still tabulating ballots -- the 126-million votes already counted means about 55-per of voting age citizens cast ballots this year. that measure is the lowest in a presidential election since 1996 -- when 53-point- five percent of voters turned out. full measures of turnout won't be clear for as long as several more weeks -- when election officials finish tabulating and certify all the results. security is being ramped up around trump tower in manhattan-- to protect the president elect. but those who live in trump tower are feeling the effects of the heightened

fear." an aide to reid explained that the veteran nevada democrat was firing away now because he was "appalled by the rush to normalize trump." a union pacific train derailed about 80 miles south of the twin cities. a series of train cars overturned in ellendale, settling in a zigzag pattern across the tracks. one resident described hearing the derailment. (ellendale resident/ evacuee - no name provided) "we heard something like a screech, like something breaking, goes by so close and we hear it all the time, like three or four times a night, we didn't nothing anything of it, 'til the railings, the safety arms, they just stayed down, they wouldn't come back up." there are no reports of injuries. at least one car was carrying propane, so a hazardous materials team was called in. people within a one-mile radius were asked to evacuate as a precaution. there's no word yet on the cause. now fox5 weather 24/7 with meterologist sam

(randy veazey/father) "smoke was billowing out. it smelled really bad." randy veazey says his daughter's i- phone 6 plus was in her pocket when it started overheating. (randy veazey/father) "so she yanked it out, it was too hot to hold, she threw it on the ground." next thing they knew, a burning odor and a lot of smoke started billowing from the phone. (randy veazey/father) "it's pretty scary, like i keep mine in my pocket and i've felt it hot before." it's a scary situation and we've seen similar incidents. last month, a new

becoming a role model for resources around the country. veteran's village has been praised as a life-saving... one-stop-shop... for all our service men and women. they provide housing with a food pantry and a 24-hour crisis intervention center. they also provide medical... job training and placement services. they help nearly five thousand vets a month. soon-- veteran's village will be the inspiration for similar facilities

"we are working with a group in chicago right now to develop a store front crisis center because we know this works. we know no veteran should ever go without help or assistance and we have the infrastructure in our country now. it's just a matter of connecting the dots and doing it locally." veteran's village accepts all donations from water to cash. they also also always need volunteers the wounded warrior umpire academy got a big gift today in honor of veterans day. at&t presented a fifty thousand dollar donation to the nonprofit during a baseball tournament at arroyo grande fields. the veteran's day challenge tournament runs throughout the weekend. the wounded warrior umpire academy trains and mentors veterans to help them get jobs. there's much more coming up in the second half of fox5 news at 5. a woman is found dead in her home-- and three days later no one is behind bars. why police are now saying it could have been

head in her own home... north las vegas police are explaining why nobody has been arrested yet. fox5's adam herbets found out... this was likely a domestic shooting, but there's more to the story. well the north las vegas police department has already interviewed all of the witnesses. there were only two other people inside the home... but the case is still under investigation... and of course that means -- the police can't say too much. but they did tell us this... they are still looking into the possibility that this was a murder... but they're also looking into the possibility that this could have been self- defense... or that the woman is the one who may have fired the gun. the police also told us -- they have never been called out to that address before for domestic violence. now -- we know the names of the people who lived here... but at this point, just for the family's privacy, we're not going to release the name of the victim or any suspects. it was a 47-year- old woman who lived there with
