to take the stage. it's been five months since the n-h-l awared the las vegas expansion team back in june. the name is expected to include the words "knight in it." and is also expected to contain either desert.... golden.... or silver. bill foley--the team's owner... graduated from the united states military acadamy. he's talked about hopes to call the team the black knights but recieved a lot of push back. foley settled on a name at the end of august. and team have been working with adidas on a logo since mid july. that logo was't ready until the middle of last month though. the runnin rebels'

team is facing off against n-a-u tonight. the rebels are looking for their third straight win tonight at the t and m. the game is part of the global or preliminary rounds. the rebels one their second game saturday night against cal state fullerton 77 to 68. that w marked a 200-th career win for head coach marvin menzies. we will have highlights form the game tonight on fox5 news at 10 and 11. in just 8 months - unlv will welcome its first class of students for the new medical school. the university has made no secret about the fact the school was pushing money....

efforts to becoming recognized as a tier one research university. one of the key elements to gaining that status is a medical school but it's also a big step forward for southern nevada. nevada is in the bottom tier of states with primary care physicians per one hundred thousand population. the hope is...as the medical school evolves and add additional research arms on top of residency programs, students who graduate will stay in the area...not only helping the numbers but also the specialization area needs to prevent people from traveling to other cities. unlv president len jessup calls it a win-win. len jessup/unlv president: we want to be better connected to our community. we want to help. we recognize we need the community for the univeristy to get to the next level but the community needs a great university to get to the next level as well. then there's the financial impact the medical school will have. our community is changing and this is something that is going to impact you, your family and the next generation of southern nevadans.

us for a closer look at the medical school's impact on our community. fox 5's kevin bolinger brings us a special report you'll see tonight at 10. a 25-year-old was sentenced to life behind bars for the rape and murder of a woman behind a strip mall. jerry howard was sentenced to life without the possiblility of parole. that sentencing was recommended by both prosecutors and howard's own attorneys. court documents say howard attacked a woman when she was collecting cans back in january of 20-15. the woman was beaten....stabbed and sexually assaulted before being thrown in a trash n. prosecutors agreed not to pursue the death penalty after howard pleaded guilty last month. we now know the name of the man shot by his girlfriend while he was driving sunday night. police say cheryl rheamount asked someone to call police because she was invoved in a shooting with her boyfriend. police found the man inside his car in a desert area near lamb and lake mead. the clark county coroner identified the victim as 32- year-old matthew bernardi from reno.

shot in the chest. bernardi was taken to u-m-c where he later died. rheamount is behind bars facing murder charges. police have a downtown area shut down because of a barricade. right now, fremont is closed between bruce and 21st street, and lewis is closed at bruce. metro says there was a shooting in this area. so far, no injuries have been reported... but there is a suspect barricaded in the room. sterling gardens motel has been evacuated. we have a crew on the way, and will bring you details as they develop. game wardens need your help finding the person responsible of killing eight mule deer and leaving them to waste near mount charelson. game wardens found several kill sights and do think that they are all related. but they haven't ruled out multiple shooters. a small amount of meat was taken in some cases but most of it was left behind. leaving animal meat is a crime itself. they are offering a three thousand dollar reward to help catch that person. in more local

the book on this year's election results with a ceremony in carson city today. supreme court justices met at the capiton building for the officall canvass. they signed off on results that each county commission already approved. the final results usually have some slight changes from early results posted online by the state's election results website. the state will take another step to formalize the election-- when the six members of the electoral college meet next month to vote for the president. those members are bound by law to vote for hillary clinton since she won the state's popular vote. some folks are diving right into the holiday spirit face first! the festive contest that's filling bellies--and raising money for local charities. how much time these contestants had to stuff their faces to win the big cash prize. plus-- a sight you don't want to see this holiday season. the number of kitchen fires sparked on thanksgiving-- and how those numbers compare to every other day of the year. this is fox5 news at

now here's a sight you don't want to see this thanksgiving. the consumer product safety commission demonstrates dramatic kitchen fires. the organization says there's about fourteen hundred cooking fires each year-- just on thanksgiving alone. that's more than three times the average of any other day during the year. the commission advises chefs to never leave their food unattended... and if you're including the kids in the cooking... keep them away from hot surfaces. it's not thanksgiving

a few people stuffed their faces with delicious pumpkin goodness all for a good cause. the "grand bazaar shops" hosted a pumpkin pie eating contest to support two local charities-- "veteran's village" and "catholic charities" contestants only had five minutes to eat as much pie as they could. attendees also got the chance to participate in other holiday activities like thanksgiving caricatures and picture with a pilgrim and a turkey. "we really feel like this is a time of year where we want ot give thanks for everything that we're blessed with and we want to be to give back to our we though this was a great way to do that. " the runner-up of the pie eating contest walked with one-thousand dollars... while the winner of got three- thousand dollars. a driver smashes an s-u-v into the side of an airport. sending three people to the hopsital. rilay says: "oh it was just terrible because it's thanksgiving and those people were just on a trip."

president-elect donald trump met with the new york times staff today -- and he started it off by complaining about the paper's coverage of him. trump's visit at the times' headquarters -- which he'd earlier backed out of-- included an on- the-record meeting. according to the times' mike grynbaum... trump said he has "great respect" for the new york times, but he thinks he's "been treated very rough." the times' maggie haberman tweeted that trump said he felt he'd been treated unfairly campaign -- but wanted to improve his relationship with the paper. dramatic video released monday-- members of the so-called "alt- right" movement performing nazi salutes, while celebrating donald trump's victory. "the atlantic" captured the closing remarks at the annual conference for the national policy institute. richard spencer, president of the n-p-i, addressing the crowd of around two- hundred attendees... shouting "hail trump, hail our people." members of the white nationalist group were then

it's also approached disney's e-s-p-n and one world sports, which carries sports like russian hockey league matches. apple may be bringing back an old but popular style of cell phone. the tech company has been granted a patent for a flexible i-phone that can fold in half... much like an old school flip- phone. the patent for "flexible display devices" features a touch-screen smartphone with a design popularized by phones-- one that opens and closes like a notebook. it's unknown for sure if there is an i-phone flip-phone in the works... but apple's patents often provide a glimpse into what the company is thinking for the future. apple is getting back into the black friday spirit. the company has never really embraced the shopping holiday....and even opted out last year. but now it says this friday can't come soon enough. we don't know what kind of deals it will offer other than free shipping on some items.

season! one pig in upstate new york is taking advantage of the recent snowfall that's impacted the area. and looking fabulous in her little ugly sweater. sadie the pig from vestal, new york is enjoying the snow day with her owner alexis wilcox. wilcox dresses sadie up in sweaters and can even sit and spin like a dog in the snow sadie also loves to walk and loves eating the snow. her owner says sadie reminds her of a toddler when she brings her outside. thanks for joi us.. fox5 news at 6 o'clock is straight
