this year, the day got off to a slower than usual start... "we started a little slow this morning at 6 am..." good news for some of the later-rising bargain hunters. "we kind of regretted sleeping in, but it didn't really make a difference" but not for stores looking to kick off the holiday shopping season with a bang. nats galleria mall general manager kevin budny says despite the slow picked up throughout at the day as shoppers filled the mall... and stores are still expecting to match last black friday's crowds. "it seems to be pretty much the same" "traffic has been moving, the parking lot is packed, we're asking people to be patient in the parking lot " the galleria mall is open until 10 tonight - so still plenty of time to get your hands on some of those black friday deals. soc

now that the weather has cooled down... many are taking a spin on ice rinks across the valley. today -- the cosmopolitan hotel celebrated its season opener. the ice rink at the boulevard pool opened at three this afternoon. the resort transformed the area into a winter wonderland. while you skate -- there's light snow showers. you can also enjoy cocktails... fire pits... and weekly movie nights. this year -- the ice rink partnered with "tao group cares" to host toy drive. those that bring in a new toy will get one free skate rental. the skating rink stays open through january second. today hasn't been too chilly for black friday shopping. but this weekend -- we'll see some high winds. let's check in with fox five's meteorlogist les krifaton with a quick look at the forecast. a low pressure trough is working it's way down to southern california over the next 24

not sure of a motive police are questioning a woman who lived in the apartment where he died. they're. not sure of her involvement but say she helped move the victim from the apartment to the alleyway. they tell me they've detained her and she's now being questioned. police say they recovereon believe there could be another one in the alleyway. you may want to take a quick trip to the stateline before tomorrow. the powerball lottery jackpot is soaring!

a u-s service member was killed by an "improved explosive device" in syria. this is the first time a u-s service member has been killed in syria... since special forces were deployed there in 2015 to fight isis. the explosion was about 30 miles north of isis' self-declared capital. u-s officials say an operation to take the city from isis will begin soon. nearly 300 service members are operating in syria. before

had been killed in iraq fighting isis. the man accused of killing nine people in a south carolina church last year.. is heading to trial. a federal judge has ruled dylann roof competent to stand trial. police say he shot nine people to death at a church in charleston, south carolina... back in june of 2015. a psychiatrist examined roof earlier this month... and witnesses testified in a hearing this week. if convicted, roof could face the death penalty. jury selection in the federal trial is scheduled to resume on monday. former presidential candidate jill stein is requesting a recount in wisconsin... and has raised nearly five-million dollars for the effort. that's after voting security experts alerted hillary clinton's campaign to the possibility of hacks in key counties in wisconsin, pennsylvania, and michigan. stein says her motive is to further democracy and election integrity... and denies she's trying to deliver the

hillary clinton. in more local news... after nearly twelve hours of searching... a hiker is rescued at red rock canyon. police say the man fell about 80 feet at "epinephrine trail"... and was about three miles up the canyon. metro's search and rescue got the call around five p-m... and were able to rescue the man at five this morning. he was taken to u-m-c and is expected to be okay. families camping in the area say they heard police activity all night an morning. "there was lot of activity chopper and kind of put our heads out and it was dark using search lights in area. and we didnt know if they were looking for somebody." "we were woken again and head choppers again and i started to wonder if there was some rescue mission." the "epinephrine trail" takes about six to nine hours to climb. it's one of the longest routes in

it's the motor trend international auto show. just head over to the las vegas convention center any time -- now through the weekend. there's hundreds of new vehicles on the floor... plus you can even test drive some of them. the motor trend also showcases the "million dollar exotic vehicle display"... with exotic rides from the sema show. christmas came a little early for "star wars" fans. disney announced tickets for "rogue one: a star wars story" go on sale monday. the official "star wars" account tweeted out the news today. fans have been eagerly waiting for details about "rogue one"... which is both a spinoff of "star wars" and a prequel. it focuses on a group of rebels... trying to steal the plans for the death star. the new film debuts in theaters on december 16th. here in the valley... black friday shopping has been pretty peaceful. but in other places across the country -- it's been chaotic. we'll show you what happened when a wal-mart in georgia opened its doors for black friday shopping...

shoppers were grabbing items at a wal-mart supercenter. some of them leaving a mess. it also looks like a woman fell right into the pile. you can hear someone say they're stuck. despite the crowds -- no one was hurt. whether they headed to stores or went online... experts say black friday shoppers have already spent billions this holiday season. spending is also up from last year! dianne gallagher breaks down the numbers. from new york, to california, and between, millions of americans are skipping out on that extra slice of pie in hopes to save far more than calories by scooping up those major black friday sales. mos: i'm going to four different stores, so i'm kind of rushing between them. mos: it's not as crazy as i thought it would be. mos: it's kinda fun just to wait outside and see all the people rushing in. mos: we got a good price. holidays sales are expected to top $655 billion. that's up from last year by more than 3.5- percent. we just go every
