and i'm maria silva. welcome to fox5 news this morning. first cassandra jones joins us with a quick look at the fox 5 weather 24-7 forecast. good morning i'm cassandra jones with fox5. the coldest weather las vegas has felt in nearly 10 months is on the way this morning. a freeze warning is in effect for the las vegas valley until 8 am wednesday. neighborhoods will be dropping into the low 30s and upper 20s overnight. skies will be mostly clear on wednesday with high temperatures only in the mid 50s; below average for this time of year. skies stay mostly sunny thursday with mid 50s before

nevada stays dry, but we see more cloud cover with gusty winds to 35 mph. high temperatures hold in the mid to low 50s. temperatures moderate this weekend with highs back up around 60 degrees on sunday before another big temperature drop arrives tuesday with highs only in the 40's. a young man is dead and metro police say his father admitted to shooting him. just after 8 last night, officers were on a routine call at an apartment complex at rainbow near windmill, when they heard three gunshots. that's when a man walked out of his apartment and told officers he had shot his son. officers found the man, in his early 20's with a gunshot wound to the chest. he died on the scene. police say the man's father is cooperating with their investigation. "we don't know what actually happened inside the apartment and what actually happened. there were no calls to police, only one other person we could find that heard anything, so we have some work to do to figure out what happened here

hopefully he can shed some light on that." the man's father was arrested on murder charges. police are now interviewing him as they look into the father and son's past history. they are also asking neighbors to come forward if they think they heard anything. the man who broke out of his handcuffs and escaped custody in north las vegas has been linked to more crimes. police are now connecting alonso perez to five other crimes that happened over the summer. fox5's miguel martinez valle spoke with the d-a about the alleged crime spree.

mohommad robinson outside a local mcdonalds three months ago. now, test results from cartridge casings found at the crime scene have connected perez to a series of other shootings... " if these accusations turn out to be true he's a dangerous guy, and he has according to the accusations caused a lot of harm to a lot of people" i went through police reports. in them, i found perez's crime spree started on july 25th... he shot at a local motel. the report calls it assault with a deadly weapon... < in corner of timeline video of motel crime> on august 15th another shooting, this time battery with a deadly weapon five days later, a deadly shooting, police are investigating perez for murder with a deadly weapon then, august 27th: robinson's murder. < video of robinson on boxx in corner> just a few hours later, on august 28th... perez is accused of shooting and killing a man on a motorcycle... " had it not been for what happened with mohommad, he probably would still be running a muck, killing people, and getting away

shootings, police arrested perez and had him in a holding cell. perez broke out of handcuffs and escaped north las vegas police custody. officers recaptured him 4 days later. the district attorney is now considering the death penalty. " if he's elligable for the death penalty we are gonna take a hard look at it, because the accusations are that he's killed at least two people and caused a lot of harm" miguel martinez valle fox5 news local las vegas>> perez is due back on court next week for one of the battery cases. court dates for the other five cases against him will take place in the next few months. nevada's largest blood drive is sparking competition between our local first responders. the heroes challenge blood drive kicks off at 7 a-m at u-m-c. a local mother and guest speaker at the event tells fox5 that blood donations are essential to keeping her son alive. she says he receives blood transfusions every few weeks. local police, firefighters and hospital staff will

the most pints at today's blood drive. all donors will get free tickets to local shows. the blood drive goes from 7 a-m to 7 tonight. it looks like m-g-m started a trend! caesars entertainment will begin charging guests for parking next month. all of caesars' properties, except for the rio, will be a part of the paid valet and self- parking initiative. the company says the move will improve the parking experience for locals with valid i-d who are total rewards members platinum status or higher... will still be able to self-park for free. chances are you'll see a lot of nascar jackets in the valley this week. here's why... nascar burnout nascar champion's

the burnout on the strip is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. there will be burnouts in the intersection of spring mountain and las vegas boulevard and at the harmon interchange. friday night the wynn will host nascar's sprint cup series awards. las vegas mayor carolyn goodman is welcoming nascar fans and drivers to the our city. i won't give a rendition of it here but it's supposedly a pretty frightening screech sot whack a mole (nats) so now the paper is trying to move forward with a new identity. the scarlet and gray free press... i think any name is probably better than the rebel yell. it's kind of a mouthful but in the end i think people will get used to it. ... well, like it or not people wont be getting used to any name... if they paper doesnt get more money. it's really not about the name of the paper in their case it's about what they're covering and how well they're doing it that's something you would maybe see maybe in mississippi or alabama but not nevada keith moyer is the editor in chief of the review journal... i taught journalism at the university of minnesota he admits... you dont see newspapers across the country giving away a whole lot of money these days... but theyd be willing to do it to save the future of journalism. the one stipulation i would have is they can't touch our editorial content the rj says that's no problem... too many good students come from unlv's journalism

"skye canyon" just donated 100 bikes and helmets to the "boys and girls club of southern nevada." it was all part of "giving tuesday," a national day where people are encouraged to volunteer or favorite charities. "since bike riding and trails and parks are such a fundamental component of our community, we thought it was great to donate bikes to the boys and girls club and to kids to hopefully start them off on a lifelong learned adventure with bikes." the c-e-o of the boys and girls club says some of those bikes will also go to underprivileged students from c- c-s-d. millions of lights are shining bright at the las vegas motor speedway. glittering lights
