welcome to fox5 news this morning. first - cassandra jones joins us with a quick look at the fox 5 weather 24-7 forecast. good morning i'm cassandra jones with fox5. the coldest weather las vegas has felt in nearly 10 months is on the way this morning. a freeze warning is in effect for the las vegas valley until 8 am wednesday. neighborhoods will be dropping into the low 30s and upper 20s overnight. skies will be mostly clear on wednesday with high temperatures only in the mid 50s; below average for this time of year. sunny thursday with mid 50s before a system moves in friday. southern nevada stays dry, but we see more cloud cover with gusty winds to 35 mph. high temperatures hold in the mid to low 50s. temperatures moderate this weekend with highs back up around 60 degrees on sunday before another big temperature drop arrives tuesday with highs only in

on your heaters for the first time last night... fox5's alyssa deitsch joins us to tell us how to keep our homes warm. maybe you were one of the many people who reached for that thermostat last night-- only to find your heater isn't working. a lot of people wait until the cold weather to even test this out... that's why this time of year is the busiest for furnace repair crews. and sure... maybe people in other parts of the country laugh at us when we reach for our heaters when it drops below 50... but hey, we live in the desert. jeff rozycki, gibson air conditioning and heating it doesn't get that

dead and police are still looking for the shooter. police say around 11 last night a man and woman were agruing about a custody dispute at an apartment complex, near peace way and durango....and then it spilled into the parking lot. a third person drove up and intervened and began aruging with the man, then shot him. the victim was taken to u-m-c where he later died. police are still searching for the suspect who is described as a man in his 30's wearing dark clothes and driving a dark sporty car. we have a crew on the scene will keep you updated as we know more. a young man is dead and metro police say his father admitted to shooting him. just after 8 last night, officers were on a routine call at an apartment complex at rainbow near windmill, when they heard three gunshots. that's when a man walked out of his apartment and told officers he had shot his son. officers found the man, in his early 20's with a

the chest. police arrested his father on murder charges. they say he's cooperating with their investigation. alonso perez escaped police custody in north las vegas earlier this year.. and now... after being back in jail... he's being linked to even more crimes. according to police.. perez is serving time for shooting a man outside a mcdonalds three months ago. but police say they can connect him to 5 other shootings. now the district attorney is considering the death penalty. if these accusations turn out to be true he's a dangerous guy, and he has according to the accusations caused a lot of harm to a lot of people" he is now accused of murdering two people and battery with a deadly weapon. perez's mom is hoping her son recieves life in prison instead of the death penalty. perez is expected back in court next week. free parking could soon be a thing of the past. starting late december. all caesar's properties on the strip will start

oakland... yesterday their city council took steps forward.. to build a new stadium for the team. according to reports.. oakland is trying to find private donors.. to help build the new stadium. the oakland city council will vote on a deal december 7-th.. and they only need 5 votes to pass. this effort is being led by former raider's play ronnie lott. its not clear if raiders owner mark davis is involved in the discussions. get your cowboy hats ready.. the rodeo is the wrangler national finals rodeo kicks off tomorrow. and will be at the thomas and mack center for the 10-day event. the rodeo features competitions in everything from barrel racing to bull riding. tickets are still available.. and start at 80- dollars. race fans will also be taking over the strip... for nascar champion's week. the event kicks off today... followed by the burnout on the strip tomorrow afternoon. and it will wrap up friday night with nascar's annual awards.

devestating wildfires in tennessee continue to burn down businesses and homes. and now three lives have been lost. the area drought.. paired with hurricane strength winds.. have fueled the fles disastrous levels in just 24-hours. people are being told to flee their homes.. many even forced to leave behind their pets.. because there simply isn't enough time. chief greg miller, gatlinburg fire dept: "those high winds were knocking down trees, those trees were hitting power lines and they were falling on this very dry, extreme drought-like condition and everything was catching on fire." some evacuees are being forced to drive through

some local students teamed up with north las vegas... to bring a new sign that

to their community. the previous sign was battered and had graffitti all over it. so students at tom williams elementary school stepped up.. and asked to help take care of it. "they noticed that this sign was a disrepair, welcoming people into north las vegas. so they sent me an email saying mayor we think that the entrance into our wonderful community doesn't look as good as it should." north las vegas mayor john lee says he's excited about the next generation being concerned about the city they live mike doria is pushing for new content in the signs and mobile billboards you see up and down the strip. and one of the companys responsible for the mobile advertising told him to go for it if he thinks he can do better! and this morning he is live at kre8 media where he's at work on a design and giving us a behind the scenes look at the outdoor

outdoor apparel store "patagonia" promised it would donate all of its black friday revenue to charity.. they expected to raise a lot of money.. but they ended up making 5-times more than expected! now the company is keeping their word.. and donating 10- million dollars to environmental groups around the world. the company says the came up with the idea to bring people together after a rough presidential election.

on santa's list this year.. downtown summerlin is celebrating the "pawlidays" sn they've been very good dogs they've been getting ready for christmas butt to sn it's not a whole lot of talking sn i just want to know what they want for christmas despite the cold weather.. pups from all over town came to sit on santa's lap. and owners say.. they already know what their dogs are asking for. gd lots of squeaky toys lots of annoying toy butt to we came to bring grover to see santa. it was our first time doing it, but it will not be the last. one pet parent even said their dog liked santa way more than their child did. christmas can be such a great time of year.. it's 24 hours of family fun.

super mario world is coming to universal studios. nintendo will open several attractions based on their most games at their parks in orlando, hollywood and osaka, japan. the attractions will feature characters, like mario, and interactive attractions, shops and restaurants. the companies did not say when the sites will open but will take place over the next couple years. a lot of people do those office lottery pools... usually you get to split 10 bucks

this situation started last night around 9:30 when police responded to a couple arguing inside a apartment here at durango canyon near peace way. the argument was over the custody of the couples small child. after police left, the argument picked back up this time taking place in the parking lot. that when a third man approached the couple, exchanged a few words with father of the child and pulled out what police call a small assault riffle and shot the man once in the chest. the and the victim was taken to umc where he died from that gun shot wound an hour later. police need your help in finding the suspect. he's described a a black male in his thirties with a goatee driving a black sports car. police say his was a random shooting, the suspect and victims have no relationship l, he just decided to intervene and then he fled. if you have any information please call crime

a young man is dead and metro police say his father admitted to shooting him. just after 8 last night, officers were on a routine call at an apartment complex at rainbow near windmill, when they heard three gunshots. that's when a man walked out of his apartment and told officers he had shot his son. officers found the man, in his early 20's with a gunshot wound to the chest. police arrested his father on murder charges. they say he's cooperating with their investigation. alonso perez escaped police custody in north las vegas earlier this year.. and now... after being back in jail... he's being linked to even more crimes. according to

some local students teamed up with the city of north las vegas... to bring a new sign that welcomes people to their community. the previous sign was battered and had graffitti all over it. so students at tom williams elementary school stepped up.. and asked to help take care of it.
