new details tonight on the deadly shooting of a police officer in the washington state city of tacoma. someone shot and killed the officer last night.. the officer was responded to a domestic violence call. a police spokesperson confirms that law enforcement was able to remove two children from the house after the 11-hour standoff ended-- it was during the rescue of one of the children that a window opened for police to shoot the suspect. officer loretta cool/tacoma police :10 - :32 "when they were able to rescue the boy, there was an opening to rescue the girl and that's what provoked the shot that took the suspect out. the girl and the boy were both unharmed. they were taken to the

appears that they were not physically injured during the incident." police have still not released any names of the people involved in this incident. in tucson, arizona this morning.. two police officers were injured during a shootout with a suspect. police also shot and killed the suspect. the officers were serving a felony warrant at an apartment complex when shots were fired. one officer required surgery for serious injuries -- the other officer's injuries are not life threatening. made another pick for his administration -- he chose retired general james mattis to be his secretary of defense. a formal announcement will come next week. mattis spent more than 40 years in the marine corps. he served in both afghanistan and iraq. he would need a congressional waiver to be the defense secretary. that's because retired officers are required to be out of uniform for at least seven years before heading the pentagon. mr trump has spent most of the three weeks since

criticized the vice president elect's policies regarding gay rights. ilse heintzen, neighbor "we do have, obviously disagreements and, as i said, this is one way that i can show my disagreement." come january .. pence will move 15-minutes down the road to the vice-president's mansion. but until he does, the flag hanging neighbors say he is welcome.. and they are just expressing their feelings. starting today .. all it takes is a single search warrant and federal agents can search millions of americans' computers and cell phones. a bipartisan group of senators tried to stop the rule from taking effect, but republican senate leaders denied their requests for a vote. the justice department says the updated rule is needed to help them investigate and track down cyber criminals. oregon senator ron wyden-- one of the senators who tried to block the rule-- calls it "government hacking and surveillance." he went on to promise to introduce a new bill in the next congress to repeal it.

former astronaut buzz aldrin has arrived in new zealand -- after being evacuated from the south pole for medical reasons. the national science foundation said aldrin's health "deteriorated" while visiting the area as part of a tourist group. aldren is now 86- years-old.. he had fluid in his lungs but is responding well to antibiotics. aldrin was p of the apollo 11 mission in 1969-- when he became the second person to ever walk on the moon. here's another rescue that got our attention today.. an 11-year-old girl in stoughton, massachusetts is being hailed a hero. her quick thinking saved her two day old baby sister's life. this is miranda fabregas at just seven days old. she's a happy, healthy baby. but when she was just two days old, baby miranda gave her family quite the scare when
