steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. city leaders all across eastern iowa -- addressing concerns ove the safety of their neighborhoods. tonight -- the discussion is in dubuque...addressin g concerns that they don't do enough to keep the public safe. dubuque's city council in a special work session tonight, looking at the efforts to combat crime. kwwl's brad hanson at that meeting tonig. he joins us live now from the th dia newsroom n dubuque. there's no doubt that crime has been a hot topic in dubuque this year. to date, we've seen five homicides and more than 20 confirmed reports of shots fired. those numbers aren't going unnoticed. dubuque has seen 18 murders over the past 15 years, and none in 2013 and 2014. but five this year have enough. those conrns addressed by dubuque's city council at a special work session. (mike van milligen, dubuque city mmager) "the city council has always made public safety their most important priority, and has approved the allocation of a tremendous amount of

resources to this effort." big focus has been the city's effort tobtain more cameras and light upupthe streets s ith l-e-d lights. camera's were instrumental in the arrest of helmon betwell, the man who murdered a 62-year-old woman because he said he d nothing better to do. and now plans are in (mark dalsing, dubuque chief of police) "through the approved funding most recently, we'll be center, much like the one you see that is in the disatch center, and we are overwhelming them with requests to see the security cameras, streetlights d policing have been a big focus, there's also a big effort underway here in dubuque to improve the content of these trouble neighborhoods, and stop crime before it starts." because, while crime is partially a policing problem, it goes much deeper than that. after a meth lab is busted in an apartment complex the bust happened at 210 ridge drive in mamaion. police discovered he lab while respondiig to disturbance calls in one of the wedgewood apartments. 31-year-old austin gee is charged with possession -- and charges are pending for making methamphetamine. marion city ordinance requires landlords to test the apartment ere the meth was found for residual levels of chemicals. if the test is positive - -all apartments that share a wall with the contaminated unit must also be tested. however -- th owners of the building - - kelley property management did not say when those tests will be done. some tenants say they're worried about the results. "sharing a two-by-four and some dry wall . . . it's kind of it up online. that stuff is scary. how close to death i was living next to." the e ty ordinance does not give a deadline for landlords to complete the tests - - however

complete the tests - - however they are worring on one to get the tests done.. a man is arrested after police find items used for a meth lab at his la porte city home. authorities say 39-year-ol rananall wagner caaled police wanting assistance at his la porte city home in the 300 block of 8th st. responding officers found the non-active lab --long with two different prcription bottles with pills without prescriptions. wagnerrs facing multiple chages including conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine a man involved in a crash with a school bus following a police chase is sentened to 15 years in prpron. here's the most rrcent mugshot for james surrett -- who also recently pleaded guilty to several unrelated meth and o-w-i charges. you can see the aftermath from the crash here in cedar rapids. deputies tried to stop surrett because he was s riving withoo a

license. he then crashed into the school bus and a pickup truck -- injuring some people inside the pickup.. surrett apologozed in court today and asked to be placed in a residential facility instead of prison due to a mental ililness. however a judge denied that request. four people are injured after a transit bus llides with a car. it happened at the intersection highway 281 and fairbank-amish boulevard in buchanan countt. authorities say he driver oo the car failed to obey a stop two passengers were on the bus at the time when it rolled. authorities say any crash involving a bus requires more resources. this is more of a lmrge scale. when you have a bus because you don't know how many are on." four people were taken to the hospital -- one by helicopter -- though injuries are not believed to be

new at ten -- ou can expect to pay more in sewar usage taxes in the near future, if you live in waterloo. the city of waterloo is accused of violating the federal clean water act -- specifically in regards to sewage overflow -- and now it has to pay up -- millions of dollars. kwwls olivia mancino was at the council meeting tonight when the council apprved the consent agreementy...and olivia, this was to vote on whether to agree to pay over the violations? it wasn't a unanimous vote though-- few on the council expresseded their concerns with the consent agreement tonight saying residents are going to be drowning in debt because of the the fine. eastern iowa -- a region no stranger to heavy rain. when overflow increases. in waterloo, the environmental protection agency has alleged the city's sanitary sewers have released an excess of untreated sewage during heavy rains -- and now they want the

city to y up "the epa is shaking us down" as you've just heard from councilman tom llnd, not everyone agrees with the e-p-a's decision. at monday nights city council meeting, lind accused the mayor and financial commtee of keeping the rest of the board in the dark . "all of the sudden it comes to a quick work session, and you're supposed o vote on a bigigissue that you found out is worth 200 million dollars to 200 million dollars -- according to the city's chief financial officer michelle weidner. and the mayor says lind's accusations the board being kept @n the dark are false. "i dont want people to believe that, because that's simply not true" lind says he wishes the city took the issue to trial rather than having a consent agrement. he says theres too much porrin the agreement, and he's ncerned for the taxpayers . "the analogy is when you take fix it and call me, you say no i want to know how much its going consent agreement passed, and

dick schilling of new hampton celebrated their 6oth wedding anniversary.. here's a photo of one half of our group of more than 4 making this trip.. and here's the other half..we also had viewers from waterloo -cedar falls, cedar rapids, marion, dubuque, shell rock, waverly..anamosa and one of my favorite photos...he view from the peak of the famous diamond head volcano cratr...we hiked to the totoof that mountain and it was worth every step. next trip is to alaska next june and rick coleman will be the host for that alaskan adventure. more information will be forthcoming.
