locations in those cities throughout the day. on the democratic side -- a new des moines register/bloomberg poll has hillary clinton leading bernie sanders 48 to 41 percent. in the last iowa poll clinton was ahead by eight points, so that's now down to seven. both clinton and sanders have gained support from likely caucus goers since that august poll. it's important to also note -- this poll was conducted before joe biden announced he would not be running this week. a big vote of support for congressman paul ryan today -- if he wants to be the next house speaker. after a long meeting with the freedom caucus wednesday -- 70- percent of that group agreed to endorse him. the freedom caucus is made up of about 40 conservatives -- and they have caused fits for the g-o-p leadership. according to the washington examiner, iowa congressman rod blum -- a member of the freedom caucus -- said paul laid out a positive vision for the party. g-o-p leadership will vote for the next speaker a week from today. the iowa board of regents continues its meeting today -- but it's a discussion point

not on the the agenda that's getting attention. yelling protestors interrupting them yesterday -- demanding the regents resign. this is some of the fallout over the board's decision to hire bruce harreld as the next university president... and new information out today -- a member of the board of regents is also questioning the hiring... saying the board may have mishandled the process in which harreld was selected... regent subhash sahai says the search may have shown some bias in the decision... saying quote "maybe we dropped the ball"... he also says the board needs more baground information on finalists before making decisions with this magnitude in the future... sahai says he does support harreld... and wants the university to give the new president a fair chance in the face of the recent protests. a national nursing shortage is hitting home here in eastern iowa... reasons for this range from more nurses being needed as baby boomers age. to an increase in demand for health care because of the affordable care act....

earlier this week -- hospitals in cedar rapids and dubuque held job fairs. and today -- allen hospital in waterloo is holding a job fair for nurses, nursing assistants, technicians, and therapists. that fair will run from three until seven this evening. an iowa judge dismisses a lawsuit over a proposed oil pipeline. the lawsuit challenged the authority of the iowa utilities board to give the power of eminent domain to an out of state developer of a pipeline through iowa. the judge did not say whether the company is eligible for eminent domain. the pipeline would carry crude oil through iowa. uni campus police investigate a sexual assault in a dorm. an alert from the school says it happened early monday morning. the school isn't releasing much more than that right now, so we don't know if the suspect is a student. on wednesday, a few groups on campus came together to raise awareness of sexual assault and violence. this is an event they had planned for a long time. just minutes from where i live off campus, and it's sad to hear that it happens in general"

as members of a fraternity meet with high school students to talk about helping victims of sexual assault, and how to prevent it from happening. in a kwwl follow-up today... we've learned the name of the man killed by police in a shootout. police say jonathan gossman fired at officers when they chased him. they say he ran off after a traffic stop tuesday night in cedar rapids. (cg: rick henry/ lives near the scene) "it sounded like fireworks but i'm an active shooter myself and i know what gun shots sound like. it was like 5 or 6 right in a row, there was no inbetween." the iowa division of criminal the incident. the two officers involved are currently on paid leave -- per the department's policy. they were not hurt. the shooting happened near two daycares. at least one daycare provider alerted parents. " unbelievable. my reaction was know. so she was just kind of telling me because they are just across the street from where everything went down." authorities say they kept police

old woman escapes her kidnapper, after being car jacked it happened near rochester, new york. police say a man tried to rob a realtor's office. as he ran off -- he ran into a woman and stole her car with her inside. he crashed the car near a river, got out, and ran away. the woman fell into the river trying to get out of the car. "well, see, when someone gets don't know at this point. it's very unusual to want to take a victim with you and to kidnap them like that, that's pretty unusual. " crews pulled her out of the water and took her to a hospital -- she's expected to be ok. police have not found the suspect. a new survey finds that in the past year -- one in three teens has been in the car with a drunk driver behind the wheel. the mothers against drunk driving poll also found nearly one- quarter of the impaired drivers were under 21. but there were also some encouraging results from the survey. 90-percent of the teens said they would be willing to intervene in order to prevent a

"we received an anonymous call from a person who reported questioned 32-year-old tony torrez.

they say torrez eventually admitted to firing the shot that killed the little girl. "he is currently in custody. he has been booked into mdc (metro detention center), and he is being held on $650,000 bond." lilly's father had just picked her and her seven-year-old brother from school. they were in the back seat of the truck; their mother was not in the car. police say on a two-mile stretch of the interstate, two vehicles each cut each other off. not long after, one of the drivers pulled up to the pick-up truck and fired a gun several times. at least one of the bullets entered through the back window. lilly was struck. nurses in traffic stopped to help. medics rushed the girl to the hospital -- where she was pronounced dead. torrez faces multiple felony charges, including murder, tampering with evidence, and assault with intent to commit a

i'm andrew spencer, reporting albuquerque's mayor has called it a "senseless" murder. mexico announces the capture of six people believed to be responsible for a july prison break... according to the country's attorney general -- a member of joaquin guzman's legal team has access to the prison... guzman is better known as "el chapo" -- leader of a drug cartel. they say the legal team was able to get to the prison to give guzman instructions. have been arrested. a masked man with a sword attacked a school today... killing a teacher and seriously injuring two students before being shot by police.... this all happening in sweden... police said the attack took place in the school's cafeteria area. the school has about 4-hundred students... ranging from pre-school to high school.... police say the two injured students are eleven and 15 years old... the school had reportedly just
