kwwl's brad hanson joins us live outside the restuarant tonight. and brad, sounds like this attack really caught everybody off guard. i've spoken with quite a few people in the past couple of hours--all of them saying that key, as he's known, is one of the nicest people they've ever met. yet something possessed three men from illinois to allegedly break in to his restaurant and beat him. the crawford county sheriff says the call came in around three thirty yesterday afternoon, when an employee was coming in to open the restaurant. key was taken to the nearby hospital, then airlifted to lacrosse with severe head trauma. local business owners (chad trautsch, owner, computer support plus) "i was burglaries, maybe a broken window. but nothing like this, nothing like a physical attack

the regent's board continued the meeting today in iowa city... kwwl's kristin rogers speaking with students and facutly who were a part of yesterday's protest, kristin what are they saying? there are many different reason why people are angry, one of the themes i heard loud and clear today was that people don't feel like they were listened to, as a lot of concerns were voiced before bruce harrold's hire. the resignation of bruce harreld, and the resignation of the board members. we've got you covered live in iowa city, kristin rogers...kwwl news. many people are angry over what they are calling a lack of transparency in the hiring process. regent member subhash sahai said today the hiring of harreld could have come off that way as he says, maybe the board dropped the ball. one university of northern iowa instructor responds to recent shootings -- by asking his students how they would respond. instructors are normally a marty hansen is asking students what they would do if he died. he says it's an uncomfortable conversation -- that needs to be shared. "i think the important thing we need to start doing now is time. it is an uncomorftable discussion to have." marty says several professors

and campus police are educating instructors how to stay safe on campus. for the first time this election season, a new poll has republican presidential candidate donald trump not in the lead. dr. ben carson is now taking the edge over donald trump according to a new quinnipiac poll released today. carson takes the lead with 28% support among likely iowa republican caucus participants, compared to trump's 20%. quinnipiac polled 574 likely iowa caucus-goers between october 14-october 20. following carson being named the new g-o-p frontrunner, trump tweeted this on his personal account. the tweet speculates that iowa voters have "issues in the brain".

the tweet and issued an "apology". trump said a young intern accidentally did a retweet and the intern apologizes. after a summer surge, carly fiorina is hoping for a fall flourish on the campaign. so far, she's not seeing the results. but it's not for a lack of effort in iowa. the republican presidential hopeful is spending a lot of time here. the new quinnipiac university poll out today has her tied for sixth in iowa. kwwl's jerry gallagher sat down with fiorina to get a sense of what's driving her campaign right now. we've had 1-on-1 interviews with a number of candidates so far and we've asked each one of them for a specific story about an iowan they've met -- that illustrates why they're running. fiorina is the first to answer that question directly. "the people of iowa take their responsibilities very seriously." from town halls to tailgates, carly fiorina is covering a lot of ground in iowa.

she says one meeting --- stands out -- demonstrating why she's in the race. she met a poultry farmer whose flock was hit hard literally breaking, 'carly, i've been in this business my entire life... i know what to do. the government won't let me do it." fiorina says they told him to keep feeding his flock until the u-s-d-a could get there. she says he many people's lives in this country is being crushed by a government that is too big, too powerful, too costly, too inept and too corrupt. as citizens we have to take our government back." fiorina's campaign surged over the summer after two strong showings in the republican debates... but now... one of her statements is being questioned. you said regarding planned parenthood, i dare hillary clinton and barack obama to watch these tapes watch this fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it

there's no evidence the piece of video fiorina is talking about is connected to a planned parenthood clinic. "but specific to that video, you don't feel it's deceptive to stand up there and say, 'this is connected to planned parenthood?'" this: four years ago this month, a similar poll in iowa had mitt romney and herman cain at the top. in seventh place in that poll -- rick santorum -- who went on to win the iowa caucuses. right now, fiorina is tied for sixth. decision 2015... soon a new mayor will take office in the city of waterloo. five candidates will be on that november ballot. kwwl's nikki newbrough spoke with former mayor tim hurley and has his story. for 37 and a half years he worked at john deere, but left to take the mayors office. "hurley spent three terms as he says recent violence in the city pushed him to this decision. "i recognize the negatives, there's no doubt about that. but defined by them." he says an opportunity for improvement in this city...stopping the violence. working with teachers, faith leaders, business leaders, and others
