the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm amanda goodman. and i'm ron steele. thanks for joining us. there aremore than 26 gangs in eastern iowaa they vary in size and structure from city to city. some are commonly known gangs, connected with tir affiliates in chicago and minneapolis but others are hybrids -- homegrown gangs -- that have started on these very streets. kwwls olivia mancino gives us a glimpse into gang violence in eastern iowa. "we have shotssfired on elm and franklin, we've had multiple reports now" in waterloo... hybrid, homegrown gangs are working to claim ththir street corners. the waterloo gang task force points to this home as a known gang hangout, and my photographer and i certainly didnt feel welcome here.

"you always looking over your shoulder...always" dozens of thhse gangs have made theher way on and off the police radar for years.. john is a former blood. he requested not to be identified. "lot of stealin lot of schemin, lot of drugs...dlfferent women" he was in the game for 20 years. "you know they dontnthave a care they dont have a worry, when they got that gun in their hand they feel like they're a god but they are not" e've had houses get shot up six or seven times within a year" "within aayear" sargeant matthew mcgeough has led the violent crime apprehension team since it started 2010. his team works at all hours of the night, trying to stop gang activity before t gets out of hand... but they're facing new challenges every d dy. "pooce say their current major concern is how young they're finding gang members -- younger than ever before. kids are being influenced by their older siblings who are already involved in the life, and police has seized hundreds of guns since their task

you can see some of them here. these guns used to be in the posession of dozens of former criminals, police estimate about 90% of them are from local gang members. "you know i can think of about three or four different families, where every male siblinin, with two or threeyear gaps, are involved in this lifestyle, and they're very violent." violent as they may be...theres one thing police, john, and this man can agree on... 'these kids that think they all that, all this and a bag of chips... if they went to chicago... they wwld be... they would be dead in ten minutes"

"three shots fired calls all within hours of each other..." the shootings, the violence -- police say its comple chaos. although the crime rate in waterloo has gone down over the past decade, police say the violence among gang members has gone up "it would be really nice if it was like the old mafia days where soldiers, but we dont see thatt nowadays, police say it only takes one facebook post to incite new feuds, causing groups to break off into new factionsl keeping police in a constant state of catch up. john lives a new life now. "i feel blessed. in many ways" he was one of the lucky sentence, he's been out of the gang. he got out before it was too late. "at the end of the day you

police say the driver was going through a green light -- when harp stepped into oncong traffic. she was headed to work at the pizza hut near crossroads mall in waterloo. her manager says harp workee there for 29 years and described her as having a huge heart for others. new details tonight -- as ann arrest ii made in a crash involving a school bus. authorities arresting monte klink and charging him with serious injury by motor vehicle and operating while intoxicated. deputies say klink failed to yield at the intersection of 195th st. and 200th avenue in delaware county on october first, causing a cclision between his suv and a west delaware school bus. kwwl's brad hanson poke with a mother who had two kids on that buss he joins us now l lve in the t-h
