milk, fruit, cultures. mmmm, yoplait. all right. we're back at 7:42. we're launching a new series today second opinion. seems like we're being bombarded with results from medical studies and, yes, often, hey contradict each other and dr. natalie azar is here to let us know what we nene to know about a a couplef studies this morning. >> good morning. >> the first one has to do with statins. a lot of people take statins for cholesterol, a now there's a new study that says perhapsps it makes the f f shotess effective. >> which is exactly the population that we don't want to see that in, right? if you think about how many people over the age of 65 or take statins, it's same vulnerableleroup who get the flu shotot
7:41 am
why am i saying vulnerable? number one, we see a rise in flu in elderly patients, number one, and number two there's an age-related decline in your immunity as you get older so now weweave two studies that are hypothesis-generating. not definitively saying they do reduce the effect i wasness but it's raised the possibility that it can reduce theesponse t t the vaccine which c cld translate into more respiratory illness. >> this puts people in a pickle. you mentioned if you're older you're more susceptible to flu, more likely to die of the flu and if you're on statins the flu hoho is not effective, what am i supposed to do? >> a really important bottom line. given the fact this is the first study that has even looked at this the there's absolutely no formal recommendation that if you are take aggrastatin you should forgo the flu ot, and if you are planning on getting the flu shot that you should stop the statin, nobody is saying that. >> there's a high-dose flu shot. >> and this is incredibly importanan approved last year there's a high-doselu vaccine which is roughly four times as

strong as standard dose. it is recommended for all people over the age of 65. it does boost the response to the vaccine and also has a modest effect on efficacy. next topic. >> yes. >> there was a study that read essentially as i read it low-fat diets don't reaeay work. >> not the headline, not a good headline. >> what are we supposed to take from this. >> this was interesting, actually what we call a meta analysis over 63 randomized controlled trials on all these different dietary interventions. headline red low-fat diets don't work to lose weight. that's not exactly true. the real find some things that low carb diets edged out low-fat diets in terms of weight loss, but real thing was low-fat diets actually do result in weight loss. it's just if you compare them to pele who don't make any dietary intervention, that's where thehe really come out onn top. it's kind of like if you think about a high -- put it this way.
7:43 am
weight is going to workv it really depends on the individual. if you want to do a low-fat didi, great, that's going to work for you. if you want to do a high-fat low carb diet that's probably going to work for you also as long as you're including exercise, physical activity and all those other things and you stick with it. >> just with the bottom line, if you say i'm going to go on a diet, should i do low carb or low-fat. >> seems like theheow carb works better better. >> the low-carb works better over the low-fat but any diet will work as long as you stick with it. that's really take yoem. >> dr. natally azar, thank you so much appreciate it. coming up, carson helps your kids cope with theeekend of trick-or-treating and the big time change. >> trick or treat. >> and an h/ur selling 18 homes? easy. building them all in four and a half months? now that was a leap. i was calling in every favor i could, to track down enough lumber to get the job done.
