new york, this is "nbc nightly news" reporting tonight, krisisn welker.r. we begin tonight with yet another tragedy in the skies. this time, a russian plane crashed in egypt all 224 people on board. most of the passengerss were russians. 25 were children. they had just departed the red sea resort of sharm el sheikh when the plane went down 23 minutes after takeoff. russian president, vladimir putin has declared tomorrow a day of mourning as they comb through the wreckage and look for answers. bill neely starts us wff from carro. >> reporter: in a barren desert, the manglele remains of a plane carrying 224 people, their clothes scattered, their cell debris. answer. many passengers were found still strapped to their seats.

this was a metro jet plane, an a-321. it took off at 5:21 from sharm el sheikh bound for st. petersburg, russia. it dropped suddenl at 31,000 ft and slowed dramatically before disappearing from radar and crashing. communication has been lost, he says, but russian officials have no idea why. the airline quickly insisted human error wass not to blame. >> translator: our pie pilot was very we don't know what caused the crash. >> reporter: at st. petersburg airport, terrible scenes as relatives learned everybody was dead. >> i got a call on the way to the airport. >> my son called us before he left with is had wife and ten-month-old daughter. ready to board, juri and his

three--month-old daughter photographed by her mom, all perished. egyptian officials hinted that they believe a technical failure caused the crash. the crew complaining of engin trouble several times in the past week. the pilot in the final minutess reportedly requesting an emergency landing. the plane crashed in the sinai desert where islamists have fought an insurgency for years. russian and egyptian mimisters d dmissed claims that the plane had been shot down saying militant lacked the missiles to do it. tonight, russia is in shock andn mourning. a national tragedy is still a mystery this country will not forget. a mystery that may soon be in disbelief. both the plane's black box recorders have been recovered and russian investigatoto have arrived here in cairo tonight. one shock wave from all of this. some airlines are

paths, two european carriers security saying they won't fly over this area until the exact cause has been determined. thank you for the latest. we want to turn to captain john cox, who spent 30 years in safety and crash investigations and is an aviation analyst. thank you, captain cox. you have flown this exact model plane before. we know they have found the black boxes as bill neely just reported. knowledge, what do you think investigators will learn from the black boxes? >> i spent 35 flying the a-320 mily, includudg the a-321. it is a very reliable plane. record. the investigators are everything. at this point, they arar going to look at tech any cam the potential for human error. the good ws is, we have recovered the

cockpit voice recorder and the flight datat recorder. thosos are going to be essential in understanding what happened and what caused this tragedy. >> we know they will be significant. we have also learned dramatically before the crash. what does that tell images you have seen far? >> well, the pilots reached cruising altitude and then advised air traffic control o o a technicic problem and they wanted to divert. there is some conflict about whether they wanted to go back to sharm el sheikh or cairo. they wanted to put the airplane back on the ground. they started a pretty rapid descent. it is within the normal flight envelope but it is rapid. if the radar data is correct, thehe airplane slowed dramamically. that's something the investigators are going to look at very, very closely. if the airplane got too slow, it could

have stalled. this airplane h protection around it. but if that's possible and the images that we have seen from the wreckage site, they also show that the airplane appears to be all there. it is consistent with a low impact velocity. so i think this is one of the areas of focus. >> captain john cox, thank you so much for your insights this evening. we really appreciate it. we want to bring you an update on a story we brought you earlier this week. that military blimp that drifted more than 100 miles on wednesday from maryland to pennsylvania, day, a shin nook helicopter lifted the remains from the field to where it was loaded on a truck for removal. taking insurance claims for the damage caused by that wayward blimp they are beginning to investigate food
