it is estimated that 40 million americans are currently caring for an elder lyly or sick spouse or loved one. >> and if you are one of them, much of the time you are doing help, but here is the thing. the folks at aarp magazine are highlightiti the stories of caregivers in its current issue. >> and here with some advice is a caregiver expert and a caregiver herd, amy goyer. >> and you are a care giver, too? >> yes, my dad lives with me who is 92 and he has alzheimer's. and i cared for my mom who passed away and my sister who passed away. >> how do you know what you are doing? >> i don't know most of the time. >> a lot of times when this comes upon us, with he know it's coming but even so we feel ill-prepared. what can we do to get ready? >> well, you should plan ahead and have conversations with your loved ones about what their wishes are.

if you're in a crisis and in the hospital, talk to the discharge planner right away. don't wait until it's discharge time because you're going to have to do some legwork to get ready for that. >efore the person is out of the hospital and back in the home. >> and contact the area agency on aging about home and community-based care and go to elder care locater and find your area agency. you can also get a gyreeriatric care manager. >> through your insurance? >> usually it's not covered but this is helpful for long distance caregivers. >> first you say you have to have a team. you can't'to it alone, sflit. >> right. exactly. i can do anything at this point but i can't do everything. so you have to fill the gaps with other people. other family members, volunteers from they say a hospice or a respite organization. you can also look at personal care. my mom's hairstylist came to the house sometimes just to make it easier when i couldn't get her there. >> okay. >> so many people wanan to be helpful. >> people are offering.

you have to take them up on it. people offer, say yes. >> connect with other caregivers. body quite understands somebody else is going through the same thing. we learn the most from each other. we get the most tips from each other. go to a local support group. that agencnc on aging can give u a list or a hospital can give you a list. if you can't go in person, get online. there are all kinds of support groups and community boards. aarp has an online community you can post questions and get answers. we learn the most from each other. >> if you're a caregiver you don't have much time to leave the person you're caring for to go to these things. >> you were talking about tech technology technology. >> exactly. you know, we're juggling so much. my life, my parents' life, everybody else's life, can't do everything but you can do it better if you're organized. we have to be efficient. ththe are all kindsf care giving apps now. i use apps like ever note and

shared grocery list. but aarp has a new care giving app specifically for this. you can create medication list by taking picturere of the medicine bottles. you can communicate with your team and journal, share a calendar. those things are really, really helpful to get it all together. >> one of the most important ththgs which is i thinkne of r final points is just care for yourself because sometimes you can't give what you don't have. >> that's the hardest part. >> exactly. i always say we don't expect our cars to run without gas on empty but we expect ourselves to. that doesn't make sense. it's not selelsh to take care of ourselves when you're care giving, it's practical. you have to take energy in to put it out. know what fills you up, what gives you joy, and take care of your health as well. >> joy is nonnegotiable. >> and you say be kind to the caregiver. thank you so much. >> do some nice things for a caregiver today. >> don't miss our favorite things. >> but next, this is "today" on
