this one happening this morning in waterloo... firefighters were able to contain the fire to the basement but damage to the house's electrical wiring, as well as water and smoke damage has left the household displaced until further notice. the cause of the fire is under investigation. witnesses say the man who was in the basement at the time of the fire left the scene on a bike. his whereabouts are unknown. breaking news at noon to share with you... as the iowa department of public safety has announced the alleged cause behind an explosion that resulted in the death of a man at the shady rest motel in cedar falls last month... according to the d-p-s -- the man blew out a pilot light on a gas appliance in a room the previous night -- in what a d- p-s report calls an alleged suicide attempt... the report from the d-p-s also states that when the man awoke the next day -- he lit a cigarette that caused the large explosion.... let's go to storm track seven meteorologist kyle kiel now for your first forecast.

for seven years... it was proposed with the purpose of carrying 800- thousand barrels of petroleum from canada to the gulf coast per day... it would've stretched nearly 12-hundred miles long if it had been completed... obama cited climate concerns and a lack of longterm contribution economically as reasoning for the rejection today... continuing coverage of the trial for an accused killer. the crime happening in a grocery store parking lot. nicholas luerkens is accused of killing his ex- girlfriend. family members and mental health nurses taking the stand, saying luerkens wasn't himsell. his sister describing him as depressed, not wanting to talk. his brother agreed. in jal luerkens was placed on suicide watch... (mary coleman, rn)"because of the nature of the defendant's crime, the impuslivity of his actions, and also because he had harmed himself." the trial continues today. the jury should start deliberating in the next few days.

a tribe is looking at iowa land -- and considering growing marijuana here... omaha tribe leaders approve three referendums which give the tribal council authority to legalize marijuana for medicial and recreational purposes. while the tribe is based in nebraska, the reservation extends into iowa's monona county. there are still a few steps -- this isn't a done deal yet. tribal leaders say they'll work to make sure they aren't breaking any state or federal laws. decision 2015 coverage: the campaign for a runoff election is short-lived. as the mayor of cedar falls decides to suspend his campaign... as we reported yesterday -- jon crews announces he's retiring... this week, he came in second behind jim brown in the race for mayor -- which forced a runoff between now -- even though crews is pulling out of the race -- by law, the runoff must still happen on december first... and crews's name will be on the ballot. meanwhile -- a runoff is also on the ballot for waterloo in december... councilman quentin hart and former mayor tim hurley are going head to head to see who

will be the next mayor in that city... now -- not all mayoral elections are being solved by a runoff. the supervisor of elections in a small florida community decided to break a tie between two candiates using a deck of cards. and with the luck of the draw -- one candidate pulled out an ace. the supervisor simply says it just seemed like the best way to settle it. an iowa town has a new mayor-elect -- even though she was not on the ballot. recently, we told you about the problem in this muscatine county town. there were no names on the ballot for tuesday's elections. brian boesen found out how the voters chose their winners - with blank council member in atalissa, iowa -- dog- lover -- angie dickey it's until she realized -- that in her hometown of nearly 300 people -- and two grumps...no one was running for mayor or for city council...just

showing no disruptive weather and cooler, but seasonable for this time of the year. expecting a mostly sunny sky this weekend. a pretty typical fall weekend is in store many of us got in on some rainfall. generally a half inch or less across the area. just under a half inch of rain in ceear rapids and waterloo. iowa city got about a third of an inch. check out dubuque. just over one inch of rain. that actually tied the daily rainfall record in dubuque for november 5th. that was beneficial rain, as northeast iowa has been experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.

generation, right? wrong -- according to cnbc's latest all-america economic survey -- which finds millennials might not be so different than any other generation.... steve liesman has the results. conventional wisdom holds that the millennial generation, influenced by the world of high-speed mobile devices, is a unique group of young people. but a special cnbc all- america economic survey focusing on millennials --- a group aged 18-34 years old --- finds that while the generation has some unique characteristics, young people today in some critical areas are more similar to the rest of the population than they are different.

a state fair petting zoo. the three-week old was still nursing... luckily someone found him along a canal in phoenix and returned him to his mother about 24 hours after he was taken... as you can see... the little guy was hungry! after the reunion.. mom and "gus gus" spent the first hour and half nursing on and off and cuddling. it's still unclear who snatched the goat this week... here is the storm track 7 day forecast. mostly sunny skies all weekend long with temperatures during the day in
