next chance of rain. in continuing coverage... the trial is in the hands of a jury now -- as they work to find a verdict for a man accused of murdering a woman store... nicholas leurkins is charged with first degree murder.... he's accused of stabbing and killing 29-year-old lynnsey donald - in front of her seven year old son... donald was stabbed as she was walking out of the marion hy-vee

in the middle of the afternoon in april... the first homicide in marion in seven years. kwwl's hillary maglin was in the court room today... hillary what can you tell us? both prosecution and defense presented their closing statements to the jury after several days of testimony here in linn county. prosecutors again showed evidence... such as the murder weapon and notebook full of luerkens' plans... as well as video of the incident. defense re-stated their claim that luerkens was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the murder and (sot. cg: prosecution) "there came a time when the defendant handwriting." (sot. cg: defense) "nick's pain and the killing of lynnsey, i submit to you, were the result of a mind that has become sick and impaired, and made nick unrecognizable."

prosecutors say luerkens tried to take his own life after the stabbing because he didnt want to go to jail... proving he knew his actions were wrong. jurors are expected to come to a verdict on the trial by monday. weve got you covered live in cedar rapids... hillary maglin.. kwwl news. prosecutors say they don't dispute luerkens had a mental illness at the time... but still believe he is guilty if first degree murder rather than second degree. a murder trial set to start next week out of waterloo is getting postponed... james robert ernst the second is accused of shooting and killing a man after a fight... 23-year-old orintheo campbell junior died from gunshot wounds after a fight last december that escalated to gunfire. ernst's trial is now scheduled for january 19... investigators say a cigarette is partially behind an explosion at a

cedar falls hotel... matthew ferleman died from his injuries after the explosion at the shandy rest motel on october 10th... investigators now say ferleman blew out his pilot light on a gas appliance the night before in an attempt to take his own life. the next day when he awakened, he lit a cigarette that caused the large explosion... he died later at the hospital. six people are forced out of their home after a fire starts in the basement. it happened this morning in waterloo... firefithers say the fire damaged the homes wiring -- and left behind water and smoke damage... witnesses say the man who was in the basement at the time of the fire left the scene on a bike. the cause of the fire is under investigation. it's been more than two week since a waterloo teenager went missing..and no new updates. moe sed was last seen at his home, october 22nd. a search party gathered a week

ago to help find the missing burmese refugee family, friends, classmates, and teachers went searching in his favorite places. they also handed out flyers to hang up at businesses. kwwl's nikki newbrough is live in downtown waterloo. nikki you went to his school today. his classmates and teachers say it's like a piece of their school is missing. that's right. his teachers say it's like he vanished into thin air. but they will continue to search for him moe sed is a student at west high school. missing posters with his photo hang in the main office, hallway, and classroom. his teachers say students ask about him all the time. and for the last two weeks, they've had to mark him absent...not because he is sick...but because he is missing. he's ok. when i go to bed at he's somewhere safe, he has food. i think of him pretty much all the time, every day.

main stage will be less crowded for the fourth g-o-p debate scheduled for tuesday in milwaukee. debate host- fox business announced the eight candidates who will take the main stage -- the ones on your screen -- and the four who will have to settle for a spot in the earlier debate. kwwl's jessica hartman speaking today with our polticial analysis . . . jessica, what is the line up looking like? no surprise at the top of the list. party front runners both nationally and in iowa making the cut. but its when you start digging into

see those cadidates who just made cut wouldn't have made the cut here in iowa. mike huckabee, chris something iowa polls don't agree with. all three would be likely to make the prime time debate if iowa voters were making the decision. "for mike huckabee and chris christie its a huge blow." christie responded to being pushed off the main stage in a tweet. "it doesn't matter issues." but according to political analysis it could be the beginning of the end. "to not be on that main stage, is a huge blow for their campaign and its a huge blow for folks who were thinking of supporting them. huge blow for financial reasons, so you know, those campaigns." for jindal - he has been moving up in recent iowa polls but is it enough to continue the fight? struggle for his campaign. you can kind of start to group 5, 6, 7 candidates together as candidates who are not getting the traction to really be
