an eastern iowa town issuing a water warning this evening-- the city of waterloo water works company saying recently there's been some high nitrate levels in the city's water which is unsafe for infants to drink kwwls olivia mancino learning more about this-- she joins us now live just about half an hour ago i took a phone call from a parent who says he needed to take their two month old infant to the hospital because he's been giving the baby tap water all week he said he called the hospital who contacted poison control, and told him to bring their baby in "every day this week so far i've been giving it to him nothing new, well then, we just happened questions running through my

head its like ridiculous." it is important to know waterloo waterworks shut the particular pump down as soon as they realized the nitrate levels were too high, so they say there isn't a risk now although the water we drink comes from a mixture of all the pumps, there's still a chance some people could have drank affected water this week. these wet spots left on the ground from previous rain could give insight to why nitrate levels reported above average in waterloo this week. "the acceptable contaminents level is 10 parts per million, and the levels came back 10.7 parts per million" after a heavy rain in waterloo thursday, waterloo waterworks detected high nitrate levels at one specific pump in town, located near gates park. "this surprised us because it was a very quick spike, this particular well was between five and seven parts per million and

now its above 10 parts per million" clark says they aren't 100 percent certain the storm was the direct cause of the high nitrate levels, but it's likely. nitrates typically come from storms and agricultural runoff so what does that mean for you? "when nitrate levels are above normal its important you dont give it to babies especially under 6 months, instead give them bottled water the pump has since been shut off, and won't be operating until waterworks has found nitrate levels have been reduced significantly. just to reiterate -- there is no threat to anyone in waterloo right now but to be safe, do not give tap water to babies to make formula or anything else-- at least for the next few days. although it isn't likely there are high levels in the water now, it could make babies very sick

also for future reference, if there are high nitrate levels in your water do not boil the water because that'll actually make the nitrates more concentrated continuing coverage -- a murder trial is now in the hands of a jury as they work to find a verdict for a man accused of murdering a woman in the parking lot of a grocery store... nicholas luerkins is charged with first degree murder.... he's accused of stabbing and killing 29-year-old lynnsey donald - in front of her seven year old son... donald was stabbed as she was walking out of the marion hy-vee in the middle of the afternoon in april... it's the first homicide in marion in seven years. prosecutors today again showing evidence -- including the murder weapon and notebook full of luerkens' plans -- as well as video of the incident. meanwhile -- the defense
