(14:30:35 - :51 jen mccarten, 3rd grade north cedar) we are explaining to our kids how to truly think about their math. when learned how to do it, we were taught how to carry the one....but we didn't know why we were doing it.

problem - 853 minus 456? mccarten's third grade class was hard at work on that - on the left side of the white board - it's the old way of math - the way their parents learned...the stacking method. on the right side, is the "new" way...common core math...or "break apart" as thy call it insde this classroom. (1(130:52 mccartenn now we're breaking it down in 14:42:22 - :31) 853 - 400 equals 453 for third grader macie robbins - she prefers the new math. (14:41:46 - :00) 800-400...shows all the basic moves. do yououlike?...what about your parents? this one. (laughter) (mccarten 14:31:47 - :02) as adults we do so much mental math - allowing them to

me common core math is all about teaching our kids critical thinking. (mccarten 14:33:42) rigor doesn't always mean it's harder - thinking more deeply - applying to real life. and that could be the key to further success own the road. (nats of kids yelling 397!)
