live in waterloo with the story if youre ever ii a situation where theres an impending strong storm or tornado its always advised you seek shelter somewhere away from windows, sturdy, and low to the ground well at one local hyhyvee there windows. so employees thought fast, and you never know when a storm will hi. in the midst of heavy storms and a tornado warning in black hawk county wednesday, everyone was adviss to all costs---o matter where you were. "there were a couple customers that were like i just want to get my groceries and go home" "imagine being a the grocery store shopping for a few snacks when an employee approaches you and tells you to et in the cooler immediately." thats exactly what happened at a hy-vee in waterloo. once the tornadot& warning hit the area, employees ushered everyone into the safest place--the cooler. "we were packed all the way from here to here, huddled in langan and roughly 15

it was cold. in the crash. some trees getting knocked over in the storms today -- including this pretty big one here on gilbertville road in black hawk county. cres were on the scene to cleanup the debris -- they say luckily nobody was hurt. this video was shot in downtown cedar rapids -- check out this sign barely hanging on in the wind, rajn coming down extremely hard in the area. thth storm, like much of the area, moved through dubuque pretty quickly--the worst of it coming in going in about ten to 15 minutes. officials estimae winds hit around 56 mies per hour, but only minimal damage reported around the area. you may have received a delayed - or repeated text alet from black hawk county tonnght. we talked with black hawk county emergency management who tell us there is a glitch in the computer system -- and that caued all of those alerts.

they are working on the issue and hope to have it fixed as today, is veterans day and the sullivanbrothers iowa veterans musuem is honoring those who sacrifice so much f fr our country. kwwl's lauren moss spoke with some vietnam veterans, whom say it's great to get the recognition today..that they didn't get in the past. i just had to get back anan see soso of the things that i museum. he was drafted into the of iowa is leech lake minnesota fishing and to go to vietnam 14 probably ever cared to hav but it was a great experience you go a boy and come back a man that's for sure. as he looks at pictures of his past.. camels..we had a lot of camels... a memory stands out.. dick miller- anything you could remember home by you grabbed on to ral quick you bet. i was in vietnam and i was on guard duty late at night when i heard that dan gable got beat in his final match of his college career and i'll never forget that..i'll never forget where i was and the fact that he

reporting. the musuem offered free admission to all of the veterans today. cedar falls high school students remembering those who served with an assembly this morning -- they listened to a special guest speaker who served in vietnam. in werloo, students at west high school participated in an assembly for veterans day... students getting to watch a movie which featured west high school alumni who served our country. while we remember those who have served,some troops are getting eady to ship out... the 649th regional support group out of cedar rapids will be deploying as a part of operation enduring freedom. the unit will be gone for a year but first, they're training -- spending time at the armed forces reserve center in cedar rapids. these vehicles are similar to the ones they will have in afgahnistan... the soldiers say working as a team is criticaldto their become a family. indictments against 106 of the 177 bikers arrested folowing a deadly shootout outside a reetaurant in waco earlier this year. nine peop were killed and 20 thers were injured in the may 17-th shooting between rival motorcycleegangs and police. authorities have not released the names of those who were indicted today. auttorities identiiy the man killed n a shooting in calhoun county. 41-year-old dale potter's body was found in the 200 block of second street in pomeroy with a gunshot wound. no arrests have been made at this time -- but the public is not believed to be in any danger. a 19-year-old man is in custody -- accused of making terrorist threats against black students at the university of missouri. huntererark allegedly posted to social media website yik yak that he planned to stand his ground and shoo every black erson he sees. there's now more police presence

on campus -- partially ue to prototsts which eventually led to the resignation of the university of missouri president earlier this week. declining enrollment at wartburg college is forcing the waverly college to cut some positions. collegeepresident darrel colson announced today they will be cutting three faculty members; throughout the process several students have shown their support in the form of protests. cut faculty members say they appreciate the support. "for every day that i've had doubt about my abilities in the from my students in the form of support." those people cut will have an opportunity to teach one more year at wartburg. central middle e chool studentss and teachers will go wheel to wheel this week in waterloo. sportability of iowa introduces wheelchair basketball to seventh graders. and as kwwl's macleod hagman reports -- it's not as easy as it looks.

"so at first, i had kids who couldn't do it, but then eventually they were in their wheelchairs they were playing basketball ull court, so, that was kind offnice to have done." central middle school p-e teacher kellap grant says chairs at first -- but started to enjoy it. nene. the folks at s srtability have overcome a lot of challenges... you may remember back in december, 2013 someone stole a trailer full of their wheelchairs from a ymca parking lot in cedar rapids... about six months later, this man rick smith was arrested and charged with stealing the wheelchairs. by the time he was arrested, the chairs had since been replaced. coming up next... perennial power tripoli begins its quest for another state volleyball title.. and also-- can the dike-new hartford wolverines win one for the thumb... rick coleman joins us next on kwwl.

i owe about $68,000. i owe $44,000 in student loans. my plan, the new college compact, says you should not have to borrow money to pay tuition if you go to a public college or university. and you ought to be able to refinance student debt. and i don't believe the federal government should be making a profit off of lendidi to young people who are borrowing to be able to get their education. we have got to make college affordable.
