good evening everyone, i'm amanda goodman. and i'm ron steeee. thanks for joining us. we've said the words on our newscast many times -- "shots fired" many believe gunfire incidents are abnormally high in waterloo, compared to oththr cities in iowa buttrecent data shows thats not the case we've got the numbers to prove live take des moines -- it's three times the size of waterloo... but when it comes to shots fired calls -- des moines has had nine times the amount that waterloo has had. it gives some perspective of whats happening in our area. scenes you see often on the news. but just how often? waterloo police have been year, those are confirmed reports wiwih evidence. one officer told me probably half the shots fired calls no evidence." in waterloo's most recent reported violent incident, a carrashed into a tree after being shot at multiple times near the neighborhoods of courtland and

streets. "i've been living here for 20 years, and its quiet to me" barry lives near where this crash happened. he says it doesn't change his perspepetive on waterloo, and it couudn't. "waterloo is a fairly safe neighborhood by in large and the people are friendly" others we spoke to agree. you may recognize this man...he isn't a stranger to our cameras.s. leon mosley is a man who's lived in waterloo his entire life... he's seen how the violence has transpired. "i love it here, i grew up here, few bad apple families in waterloo creating the problems many conversations with police back up that statement. "were down where we should be, but we still got too many" mosley says as soon n s certain groups can be dissolved, and brought to justice for their crimes..

meanwhile people are busy cleaning up the mess here in eastern iowa. take a look at the damage here at a farm near balltown. owners say it's the worst wind damage they've ever had. you can see a shd knocked down, toys blown all over -- but a local elementary school also seeing some damage. the rubberized roof of eisenhower elementary in dubuque blowing off in laststnight's storr. workers were at the school today replacing the roof. inside, water damage heavily affected the gym area, and the art room. the school's prinicpal says they'ri trying to go about things as normml as possibibe -- but are having to change some plans. "we're trying to have school as normal as posble. we made a decision last night when we determined that kids could be here safely, that we could have school. we've had to cancel our this point."

lunchroom--so they servvd sack lunches that students ate in their classrooms. those high winds continuing today - - making it tough on semi truck drivers. a hawkeye communittcollege transportatton instructor says winds like this are mentallly and physically challenging for semi drivers as they are constantly correcting the path of the truck. he says jst to leave e little marty kroenecke "you know all make that truck change lanes. so on a day like this, just give thoe big high profile vehicles a little extra room and a little extra leeway." for student drivers in the program this was their first time driving in high winds. several said it was eye opening to see how different the effects _f wind are between cars and semis. new at ten -- a secret service officer is arrested

after allegedly sending sexual messages to someone he thought was a 14- year-old girl. 37-year-old lee moorereis assigned to check people's i- d's while visiting the white house. prosecutors say he sent sexually explicit messages to what he thouggt was 14-year-old girl -- but turned out to be an undercover police a home is robbed at gun point by six people were in the house at the time -- including the four who live there.. take a look at this damage -- you can still see a footprint on the door where it was kicked in... it was kicked so hard it broke the wooden trim off of the door. two doors upstairs were also damaged -- including the bathroom m oor that was kickeddn while a woman was trying to hide inside, hitting her in the head and causing a welt... the people who live inside say they're still pretty shook up. & kind of in the back, more pointed it atts and was like stay here, don't do anything."

so petersen did what she coulddto calm her h h neices down. "we told her that there were no sharks in florida to calm her down." a decision she would soon come to regret. "all of the sudden this big wave camam up and jill fell." that's because jill kruse, petersen's relative, would be bitten by a shark at the beach--right in ffnt of them. "she went down to grab her calf, but i thought she was petersen still not sure what hhd happened. whipped her in the face, and she then i saw blood pool around her, so i went and grabbed her it feels like you're running in place." petersen frantically

yelling for help, still trying to come to ggps with what had just happened. "when they're writing everything down, they were no, it's worse than that, i mean, her entire calf was hanginnoff of her leg." her friend taken away in an ambulance, and petersen confronted with a camera--a reporter, calling her a hero. "i don't feel like anyone else in my position would do anything differently. i mean, she had sheer terror in her eyes, so the only thinin that was going through my head was, i gotta get her out of there. it was either, run back without her and watch her get gobbled up, or get her out of there. so you don't really have anytime to think about it." petersen still has issues with the word hero, but knows that hehe actions certainly played a role in saving one woman's life--something the

association started on sunday at 10 in the morning and are making the 286 mile trek to kinnick stadium. they rolled through he waterloo area during the lunch hour today each group is walking 15 to 20 a great cause -- awareness of veteran suicide.
