middle ground in going after these terrorists." during her speech -- hillary clinton praised president obama's accomplishments -- and said republicans want to throw it all away. hillry clinton was joined on stage briefly by her husband -- former president bill clinton. many families gather in cedar rapids -- to give their loved ones a proper farewell. 35 soldiers from the 649th regional support group depoly to afghanistan in a few weeks. these men and women have been training at the armed forces reserve center in ceddr rapids. kwwl's'skristin rogers met some of the soldiers a few days ago -- and experienced some of their training. kristin -- what were emotions like today? mama it was very emotional as families hugged their loved ones before they left... i'm told the soldiers will be deployed for a whole year spending 9 months of the year in

afghanistan. there was a large crowd of support at the ceremony preparing to send off their loved ones, on a deployment to afghanistan. families told me no matter how many t tmes their lovovd ones to worry. but the soldiers seemed confident and ready to go on their mission. inlcuding the one at george wyth state park in july. that attacker has not been caught. several people in the community are working to prevent it from ever happening again. kwwl's jessica hartman attends a run safe workshop today in cedar falls. jessica -- what did you learn? this workshop was hosted by avid runners, but the safety tips they demonstrated can be used by anyonene- anytime. the three biggest safety tips the organizers stressed were- one be aware of your surroundings. two - - as cliche as it sounds using the buddy system. - - avoid putting yourself in unsafe situations by traveling in groups. and if you do get caught in a situation - %having the tools and knowledge to flight off an atatcker. one tip i learned that we can all use. if you are approached - - have a name that you would yell. this makes attackers believe there is someone with you even if there isn't. so mac -- if that ever happens i am yelling your name -- so you

iowa for a crossfit competition. the third annual field of teams was held at the five sullivan brothers convention center in waterloo. 48 teams competed in various relay races that test their strength and endurance. for one competitor -- today's competition was about more than winning. aaron mcnew "the results speak for themselves. in 2009, i weighed over 350 pounds and now i weigh 225. i am the competition had at least eight states represented. coming up after the break -- why these pups are making such a big splash in eastern iowa. and, e hawkeyes move up in the rankings what this means for the team ... you're watching kwwl.

making a splash this weekend in eastern iowa. they are competing for the dock dogs world championship. kw-wl's shirley descorbeth joins us live in dubuque where the event kicked off. shirley -- how did everything start? the aquatics competion for dogs has been taking place all weekend in dubuque at the five flags center. i checked it earlier today -- .and the dogs were all revved up for this fun sport. (nat sound) dogs from across the country are lined up and ready... (nat sound) from a dock...to get a toy target...splashing into a pool. "we're doing the iron dog spartan flight, which is what making finals this weekend...happy." more than five hundred athletic dogs compete for the

long jump...high jump and speed retrieve divisions. so it's a pretty high energy the dogs competing are first time qualifiers, like storm right here...she actually came in the top ten of her division." it's not only fun for "dock dogs is all about comradery and community...and the fact that you're doing something healthy and active with your dog is just the beginning of the program. it's truely a team sport." this is the fifth year the competition was held in dubuque. if you didn't get a chance to check it out...it'll be back next year. we've got you covered live in organizers say nearly three- thousand people attended the event

central middle school welcomes a unique tournament to their basketball court this weekend. sportability of iowa helped put on a special tournament for teams in the national wheelchair basketball association. teams mostly from iowa and minnesota competed yesterday and today, with the iowa chairiots -- serving as host for all competitors. "through offering wheelchair basketball to people, you're couch and do something with their life. because for some reason, society has brainwashed them into this idea that just because they're in a wheelchair, they can't do anything. the chairiots took some lopsided losses this weekend, but as a newly founded team, they have plenty more opportunities with tournaments across the midwest over the coming months. next... floyd is back in iowa city -- we'll hear from the 10 and oh hawkeyes as they now own the best start in school history -- plus -- what is going on in green bay? the packers looked to avoid a third straight loss this
