and some changes coming to some of the most historic buildings in one major eastern iowa city ""you're watching kwwl, we've got you covered. this is the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. we're getting a first look tonight at video released by the french military showing two recent airstrikes against syria. there aren't many details with the video -- but you can see warplanes being armed on the ground. video then shows the apparent airstirkes against the targets in syria. a spokseperson says ten french warplanes struck several isis targets in the attack. meanwhile -- russia also joining in -- firing air- launched cruise missiles from long range bombers at targets in syria. you can see some of that footage

and back here in the u-s -- d-c. house republicans opposing to bring ten-thousand syrian refugees to america until screening can be tightened. president obama however remaining low-key on describing his plans for isis. and speaker of the house paul ryan saying in response -- the world needs american leadership. and also just in tonight -- two air france flights have been diverted. the first one headed from los angeles to paris, was diverted to salt lake city because of a security incident. a bomb threat was called in from the ground -- according to a u.s. government official.. the plane landed safely, and passengers terminal the second one -- which was on its way to paris from washington, d-c., has been diverted to halifax authorities say it did land safely --

we spoke with native syrians who are living in eastern iowa and they think it's the result of fear and misinformation. kwwl's hillary maglin has more. (sot. cg: newman abruissa/syria native) "it has affected me of course. i grew up in damascus, syria. i still have 2 brothers who live in the state to syrian refugees in the wake of last week's isis attacks on paris... native syrians living in the area believe many people have the wrong idea about people still living in syria. (sot) "the syrian people have been victims of isis, and we cannot paint them with the same brush we paint isis. we are playing right into isis's hand." (sot. cg: hillary maglin) "abruissa tells me multiple syrian families are living in iowa city and cedar rapids right now. he himself has been here for 23 years, and says this sudden dislike of refugees stems from fear." (sot) "those issues i think are symptoms of fear. i mean, they

show that people are fearful and our government is fearful. however, it's illegal for state's to decide who and who cannot come to this country." 27 states in the u-s have now made it known they want to keep syrian refugees out... for fear of letting isis members in. syrians in america see this as an opportunity to educate people who think the people of syria are all part of isis. housing projects--a couple of them coming at old catholic schools. kwwl's brad hanson getting a look inside one of those buildings tonight, and joins us live now from the th media newsroom in downtown dubuque. brad--this is a big deal for an important part of dubuque's history. it sure is--two of these projects feature three buildings that have a combined age of well over three hundred years. and converting them to senior housing not only saves them, but fulfills a big need in this city as well. "this building, in it's hay day, which most recently was in the of the sacred heart school in dubuque stand empty--the school shut down as dubuque's catholic population continues to decrease and move to other parts of town. (mary lou ball, holy spirit parish) "it is a sign of the times--people are choosing to worship in different ways than they used to." the dubuque city council approving tax abatements

that will help convert this old school into senior housing--a big win for ball and her parish. "we're particularly thrilled that the developer is considering using it as senior living, because we think that there's a (brad hanson, @bhansonkwwl) "here across town, the church of the nativity selling this land right behind me where they will build a new senior housing facility. meanwhile, this school on the other side of me, hasn't been in to do with that space." the holy ghost convent and school, both built around 1900 will be converted. and the applewood senior apartments looking to build another building here--a more than nine million sixty more units. all of these projects so important, because the 50 and

older population is projected to get over 130 million in the next 15 and in fact, by 2030, one in five people will be at least 65 years old. we've got you covered live from the t-h media newsroom in dubuque, brad hanson, kwwl news. in all, these four projects will add nearly 200 more units for senior housing in dubuque. new details tonight -- an iowa man wanted for allegedly trying to kill his adoptive mother is arrested. authorities arresting 25-year- old brandon thoma and charging him with attempted murder. police say he broke into theresa thoma's home in elkader and assaulted her. she was later found by her husband and taken to the hospital. authorities were able to identify brandon thoma and arrest him in

madison, wisconsin -- where he is waiting to be extradited back to iowa. one person is stabbed following a fight with two other men in a store parking lot. waterloo police say mark kelly took money from the victim and stabbed him in the arm in the casey's parking lot on la porte road. police later arrested kelly after he tried to run away from the scene. he is charged with first degree robbery. a second man -- david gillam was also arrested and charged with public intoxication. the victim's injuries are believed to be non- life threatening. police say all three men know each other and the public is not in danger two people are killed, four injured following a rollover crash. it happened on highway 20 near exit 140 in webster city. authorities say the the driver -- 19- year-old richard elmore -- lost control on the exit ramp and rolled several times. shelly

vehicle and died at the scene. elmore was taken to an area hospital but did not survive. three 18-year- olds and a 16-year- old were also injured in the crash. a lot of police departments are investing in body cameras -- but will be getting three new helmet cameras. the cedar falls fire chief says the cameras will help with investigating and analyzing fires -- along with educating and training firefighters. it's also important to note...these cameras can handle the harshest of conditions. john schilling, cedar falls fire chief this is one of the only cameras incredibly hot something that we don't even want to be in but they can be submerged up to 33 feet deep in water." here's a look at a firefighter's helmet camera in action during a recent fire in ohio the cedar falls fire department

helmet cameras in january. more than 300 new jobs are coming to one eastern iowa community.. the city of oelwein announcing tonight east penn manufacturing will open a new space in the town-- creating 350 jobs kwwls olivia mancino was there for the announcement..shej oins us now live in the newsroom east penn manufacturing is a lead-acid battery company that already employs 80 people in oelwein... the company announcing tonight hundreds of jobs will be added to the plant.. making it a new opportunity for oelwein and surrounding communities following months of planning, it was officially announced tuesday penn manufacturing will be expanding its business in oelwein. "something good is happening" drawing in more people from surrounding towns. east penn's c-e-o saying the expansion is a long term strategy... "we like to build oak trees not mushrooms" but of course, job

an airline passenger is restrained after police say she tried to open an exit door midflight. the british airlines plane was on its way from london to boston. police say the incident was not an act of terrorism -- and say the woman was intoxicated. the flight landed safely -- and the woman was removed by police. a soccer match is canceled following a bomb threat. police in germany canceling the match between germany and the netherlands today. the stadium was evacuated about an

the uni men's basketball team had an early morning wake up call today, but first let's check out a team that knows how to schedule a game at a more humane hour of the day. the uni women's team, already sitting at 1-0, taking on south dakota. first quarter, check out ellie herzberg, strong drive to the hoop, get's the friendly roll; uni took a commanding lead early on tonight. second quarter now, mikaela morgan dumps it in to jen keitel who powers in for the easy two. how glad does uni have to be to have keitel back from her injury; such a strong presence in that post spot. later in the second, amber sorenson drives and takes on two defenders and lays it in to give the panthers a 12 point lead. still in the second, keitel again, south dakota gives her all day to shoot, and she lines it up and knocks it down. what a dangerous player she is; keitel scored a game high 15 points. and the panthers finish off the and they'll welcome the hawkeyes to the mcleod center this sunday. panther men today, taking on stephen f. austin. i got up at 5

boilermakers kickoff at 11 am from kinnick on saturday to the baseball diamond -- check it out northsiders; cubs manager joe maddon has been named the national league manager of the year. maddon led the cubs to a 97 and 65 record and the nlcs, before being swept by the new york mets. this was maddon's first season with the team, the cubbies returning a ton of young talent going into the 2016 season. hope springs eternal cubs fans! and some sad news for fans of the sawx... boston slugger david "big papi" ortiz says he will retire after the upcoming 2016 season. this will be ortiz's 20th season in the league -- his 14th with the red sox. minnesota twins fans may recall big papi spending some of his younger years with the twinkies before being shipped to boston, where success seemed to follow him at every step. nine time all star, three time world series champ, and he clubbed more than 500 home runs, becoming the face of the red sox
