and back here in the u-s -- d-c. house republicans opposing to bring ten-thousand syrian refugees to america until screening can be tightened. president obama however remaining low-key on describing his plans for isis. and speaker of the house paul ryan saying in response -- the world needs american leadership. and also just in tonight -- two air france flights have been diverted. the first one headed from los angeles to paris, was diverted to salt lake city because of a security incident. a bomb threat was called in from the ground -- according to a u.s. government official.. the plane landed safely, and passengers terminal the second one -- which was on its way to paris from washington, d-c., has been diverted to halifax authorities say it did land safely --

we spoke with native syrians who are living in eastern iowa and they think it's the result of fear and misinformation. kwwl's hillary maglin has more. (sot. cg: newman abruissa/syria native) "it has affected me of course. i grew up in damascus, syria. i still have 2 brothers who live in the state to syrian refugees in the wake of last week's isis attacks on paris... native syrians living in the area believe many people have the wrong idea about people still living in syria. (sot) "the syrian people have been victims of isis, and we cannot paint them with the same brush we paint isis. we are playing right into isis's hand." (sot. cg: hillary maglin) "abruissa tells me multiple syrian families are living in iowa city and cedar rapids right now. he himself has been here for 23 years, and says this sudden dislike of refugees stems from fear." (sot) "those issues i think are symptoms of fear. i mean, they

show that people are fearful and our government is fearful. however, it's illegal for state's to decide who and who cannot come to this country." 27 states in the u-s have now made it known they want to keep syrian refugees out... for fear of letting isis members in. syrians in america see this as an opportunity to educate people who think the people of syria are all part of isis. housing projects--a couple of them coming at old catholic schools. kwwl's brad hanson getting a look inside one of those buildings tonight, and joins us live now from the th media newsroom in downtown dubuque. brad--this is a big deal for an important part of dubuque's history. it sure is--two of these projects feature three buildings that have a combined age of well over three hundred years. and converting them to senior housing not only saves them, but fulfills a big need in this city as well. "this building, in it's hay day, which most recently was in the of the sacred heart school in dubuque stand empty--the school shut down as dubuque's catholic population continues to decrease and move to other parts of town. (mary lou ball, holy spirit parish) "it is a sign of the times--people are choosing to worship in different ways than they used to." the dubuque city council approving tax abatements

that will help convert this old school into senior housing--a big win for ball and her parish. "we're particularly thrilled that the developer is considering using it as senior living, because we think that there's a (brad hanson, @bhansonkwwl) "here across town, the church of the nativity selling this land right behind me where they will build a new senior housing facility. meanwhile, this school on the other side of me, hasn't been in to do with that space." the holy ghost convent and school, both built around 1900 will be converted. and the applewood senior apartments looking to build another building here--a more than nine million sixty more units. all of these projects so important, because the 50 and

older population is projected to get over 130 million in the next 15 and in fact, by 2030, one in five people will be at least 65 years old. we've got you covered live from the t-h media newsroom in dubuque, brad hanson, kwwl news. in all, these four projects will add nearly 200 more units for senior housing in dubuque. new details tonight -- an iowa man wanted for allegedly trying to kill his adoptive mother is arrested. authorities arresting 25-year- old brandon thoma and charging him with attempted murder. police say he broke into theresa thoma's home in elkader and assaulted her. she was later found by her husband and taken to the hospital. authorities were able to identify brandon thoma and arrest him in

madison, wisconsin -- where he is waiting to be extradited back to iowa. one person is stabbed following a fight with two other men in a store parking lot. waterloo police say mark kelly took money from the victim and stabbed him in the arm in the casey's parking lot on la porte road. police later arrested kelly after he tried to run away from the scene. he is charged with first degree robbery. a second man -- david gillam was also arrested and charged with public intoxication. the victim's injuries are believed to be non- life threatening. police say all three men know each other and the public is not in danger two people are killed, four injured following a rollover crash. it happened on highway 20 near exit 140 in webster city. authorities say the the driver -- 19- year-old richard elmore -- lost control on the exit ramp and rolled several times. shelly
