first snow of the season. an eastern iowa mayor is bucking governor branstad -- saying his community will welcome syrian refugees... swisher mayor christopher taylor says "swisher continues to welcome all visitors and perspectiveve residents, regardless of national origin or refugee status." kwwl's brad hanson in swisher tonight, and talking with that mayor who's going against the governor. he joins us live with the very latest. mayor christopher taylor telling me today he signed this proclamation in response to governor branstad's comments

earlier this week. of course, branstand one of more than 30 governors saying they uld close ththr border to syrian refugees. many of those governors worried that a terrorist could slip through the cracks, as obama's administration is working to bring ten thousand refugees to america. in swisher, taylor says he understands the security concerns, but thinks there''a better way to approach the situation. (christopher taylor, swisher mayor) "for me, it was really a standpoint of fear and suspicion, or from a standpoint of wcoming folks in, and it seems like the latter is the iowa way." swisher says the move to accept those refugees has been well ceived so far, but admits he's been a bit overwhelmed by media attention to hear too much from his town. swisher had much more to say about this issue--including why

down a russian plane over egypt was made of an old soda can a detonator and a switch... the group also published a picture showing passports that belonged to some of the rrssian victims from the plane crash. some eastern iowans are spending the day cleaning up after some wind damage... chief meteorrlogist mark schnackenberg says the winds that hit marengo, were about 85 miles an hour. iowa county emergency management said one strong 20 second gust of wind is likely what knocked down buildings and trees in marengo. the wind blew the roof off the cub cadet convenience store... and knocked down parts of the brooklyn elevator. large tree branches are also down on nearly every block in town... which is what most people in the area are worried about. (sot. cg: candace huber/marengo resident) "my boyfriend was coming home into marengo this morning and he saw all the trees down. his over there." ergency management said there

to their knowledge... but many people in marengo said the fact that the wind seemed to change direction quickly made them think there was. emergency management also said power briefly went out after the strong winds... but no injuries were reported. in continuing coverage... a man who sparked an amber alert , accused of abduction, pleads guilty to child dagerment. kenneth johns was convicted to two counts of child endagerment and sentenced to time served with awaiting prosecution... the kidnapping of his 10-year-old stepdaughter sparked an amber alert back in march... johns admits to taking the girl from her solon home -- saying she was being abused by her mother... the girl's mother, shelley johns actualllpleaded guilty to child endagerment charges late in april. a felon faces hate crime charges after a bar fight... a 40-year-old hite man - randy metcalf allegedly kicked and stomped on the face of a black man... in what

motivated bar fight in dubuqu in january. federal authorittes arrested metcalf yesterday. he could get a maximum of ten years in prison... it will be up to ten years in prison for a man who admits to stealing from a local vets post... 52 yearrold todd losh pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and criminal mischief charges... it was this surveillce video that led his neighbors to identify him... take a look - llh breaks intt the cedar falls amvets post 49 building -- and tries to crack open the atm with a pick ax... kwwl's lauren mo has reaction from local veterans ...and lauren how are they feeling knowing heeill be behind bars? veterans tell me he got what he deserved. now i also spoke to a blawk hawk county attorney who was in the court room yesterdayayas losh agreed to a plea deal... he tells me losh was apologetic and here's a look at the video again from august

losh spent about 45 minutes smashing the atm over and over. police say he also broke into a locked office and tried to break into a safe..vets tell me he stole about 17 hundred dollars total from them. now in court yesterday, a county attorney says losh was extremely emotional. saying he's made some bad life choices..and that his own father was a veteran.. but the vets at post 49 aren't to say that your dad was a vet you u now yes he has some idea doesn't really know what he's talking about so i have no sympathy for the guy that broke in..none at all." the members bought a new atm at post 49 but nny tells me the memories are still there..affecting every member at post 49. he compares someone stealing from veterans..to someone stealing from the red cross. it's also important to note that whee losh roke into the amvets building in august.

he was on probabtion in linn county for other break-ins as well. we've got you covered, lauren moss ...kwwl news. thanks lauren- again, losh agreed to a plla deal and will spend up to 10 years in prison. an eastern iowa town is looking for a new mayor after he admits he didn't know the responsiblities. duane devine ran unopposed and was elected mayor of new hampton. now the city council is looking for someone else to fill the positionn kwwl's nikki newbrough has the story. election night has come and gone in new hampton. the duane devine. there's only one didn't think it was goiig to be as big of job and as complex as it is." on monday devine turned in a letter stating he didn't want to be mayor. "it certainly caught everybody off guard." after meeting with current mayor robert martin, devine admitted the job is too much. mayor martin say his job is more than just ribbgn
