friday evening, and lasting through early saturday a local mayor going against governor branad, saying he will welcome syrian refugees into his town. swisher's mayor, christopher taylor, signing a proclamation that says in part, "swisher continues to welcome all visitors and prospective residents, regardless of national origin or refugee status." kwwl's brad hanson getting a chance to speak with taylor today. he joins us live now from swisher. brad... taylor says he made thths proclamation directly in response to governor branstad's comments earlier this week, saying he would shut down iowa's borders to syrian refugees.

branstad and 30 other governors this week saying they wanted to keep syrian refugees out of their states--this after obama saying he wants to bring in thousands of those refugees. ma worried a terrorist could slip through the cracks. t taylor says that while he understands the security issues compassion. in swisher, brad hanson, kwwww news. swisher not the only town going against their governor--chicago, phoenix and boston among those who's mayors have gone against their governors. people living in marengo are dealing with a lot of cleanup tonight... high winds blew the roof off the cub cadettonvenience s sore and caused the brooklyn elevator serious damage as well. kwwl's (sot. cg: ruth roggentien/marengo resident) "i heard this ripping sound and i gusts of wind blew through the area last night... with marengo getting g hit the hardest.. chief meteorologist mark schnackenberg says the town saw winds of 85 miles per hour. large tree branches are down on nearly every block. the brooklyn elevator suffered significant damage... and the roof was torn off the cub cadet convenience ssore. but people who live in

(sot) "when we looked outside, the clouds were like, moving that direction, but the wind was coming from this direction." though most people in orengo say this doesn't scare them... they do say they don't normally see damage like this . (sot) "not often at all. this was dead stuff that blew down last night, but`those were pretty good sized limbs." iowa county emergency management says one strong 20 second gust of wind caused the majority of the damage in

authorities are looking for a registered sex offender after they say he stole two vehicles last week. a warrant was issued for mark macinnis in the amount of $1500 cash. the fayette county sheriff's office says macinnis stole a vehicle from oelwein on november 8 and drove it to an address in sumner where he allegedly stole a second vehicle. authorities went to the address macinnis is registered as a sex offender, but he was not there. evansdale police department has officially named a police chief. jeff jensen was appointed tonight by mayor faas at the city council meeting. jensen has served the evansdale police department for 15 years. up o ten years behehnd bars. that's the maxiimum sentence for a man who pleaded guilty to stealing from a local vets post. 52 year old todd losh pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and criminal mischief charges... was this surveillance viddo that led his neighbors to

identify him... take a look - losh breaks into the cedar falls amvets post 49 building -- and tries to crack open the atm th a pick ax... kwwl's lauren moss speaking with a county attorney in court..and lauren he says losh admitted he was wrong.. that's right a black hawk county attorney wh was in courr.. tells meme he was apologetic and truly upset for stealing from these vets. get this: losh even said his father was a veteran...but the vets at post 49 aren't buying the tears. denny koehn of post 49..thinks back to the break..in. and then to have this building admited to stealing more than 17 hundred dollars from the veterans back in august. this week he was sentenced to up to ten years in prison...and acted a bit different than he did in this surveillance video. a black hawk county attornee says he was visably upset and apologetic. but the vets here don't buy it. you do wrong you have to pay the price aad you can't tell me he didnt know he was wrong. understand what us guys have gone through

kwwl's nikki newbrough joinsus live. nikki? 81-year-old duane devine ran for mayor unapposed. he says he's out though admitting he didn't really understand how big of a job was. devine met with the urrent mayor, robert martin one time after he was elected. it was after that meeting he decided to send in his@letter of resignation. mayor martin say his job is more than just ribbon cuttings and proclamations. he says although the job isn't full time, and doesn't pay much, the position has a lot of responsibilies. "the city of our size we don't have a city administrator, we know." "because i was not really familiar with what the deal, i is." so where does the city go from here? it's a little unclear. the council may appoint a new mayor, but that appointmmnt may takekeplace at the first meeting in

school's with native american nicknames are being asked to change them because many believe it is offensive to native american tribes. well today, the university of north dakota is the latest school to chaae their team nickname. the process of retiring the old one - "the fighting sioux"- and finding a less controversial replacement has taken years. over the past five days, thee campus community voted between "fighting hawks" and "roughriders". nearly 30- thousand students, staffers, alumni and others cast their ballots. and according to the university president, the winner is...
