student herself covered police are looking for a man who tried to rob a local supermarket at gun point. waterloo police say the man walked in to ray's supermarket late last night -- exchanging gunfire with the store owner. you can see some of the bullet holes in the door and ceiling tile -- along with shattered bottles of champagne. the store was also broken into on saturday. no arrests have been made at this time -- but police say they have several leads. a woman riding her bicycle is hit by a police squad car on patrol. according to the black hawk county sheriff's office -- the waterloo officer was patrolling the area of west ninth and washington streets when the woman was hit. her injuries were minor -- but she was cited for riding without a light

and violating one-way traffic. the officer is not currently facing charges. a driver leads authorities on a chase after failing to pull over. the linn county sheriff's office says they tried to pull over the pickup after running a stop sign at the intersection of prairiesburg road and monticello road -- north of prairiesburg. the driver however kept going -- leading to a chase -- before hitting a tree on northway drive in waubeek. the driver then got out of the pickup and started to run away. nobody was injured in the incident -- but authorities were not able to find the driver. it's designed to track stolen vehicles, hold parking violators accountable, and keep criminals off the streets. but do automated license plate readers invade your privacy? kwwls's macleod hageman rides along with a des moines police officer who uses the technology every day -- and explains how you might be affected. cameras at

(nats... of aclr) des moines senior police officer luke harden says his automatic license plate reader -- (nats ... of aclr) -- gives him an extra set of eyes on the road. "it'll alert you with a beep. in another program. send you a quick picture of the plate and a description. so you know what to look for." officer harden says the four-mounted cameras on his cruiser alert him -- (nats... of aclr) of all violators. "it's not always stolen cars. things like that." "rain or shine, day or night, whether a car is moving or stopped, the license plate readers are always recording lots are popular spots for patrolling officers." there and read all those cars sitting through there. not all the time obviously, but a lot of the time we'll see one in the middle of nowhere, but sometimes it's just out in plain site in a parking lot with a lot with technology knows -- computers are not perfect. "sometimes it'll read a plate state." the technology has been part of the des moines police department for nearly three years, two years in sioux city, it's coming to cedar rapids in the coming months, dubuque police say they're looking into it, and

waterloo police say it's not cost effective at this two cruisers -- equipped with the nearly 30-thousand dollar technology -- has recognized nearly 75-hundred offenders since 20-12 -- ranging from parking violators to even sex offenders -- and helped recover at least 30 stolen vehicles. "it's been incredibly useful for us in terms of being able to maximize our time on the streets. the technology can do what we can do about 100 times faster." but critics say it's an ivasion of privacy -- recording your every movement. "finding the balance between the public's right to know and your right privacy has been an issue." the american civil liberties union even filing lawsuits in four states... here in iowa -- a-c-l-u legislative director dane schuman says innoncent people might be concerned information could fall into the wrong hands. "the main concern the aclu has with automated license plate readers, is what's done with the information after it's accumulated by law enforcement."

but des moines police say the license plate reader is governed by iowa law -- invasion is minimal -- and information is erased after six months. "the problem that can arise is that the information is stored, archived and used to track movement of innoncent individuals who haven't done anything wrong over time." regardless of privacy concerns -- des moines police believe the benefits outweigh the treats -- recalling this incident (nats... on-air of virginia report) where a virginia reporter and photographer were killed -- and police found this man moments -- through the use of this technology.
