nearly 3/4 of women in the u.s. over 40 get a mammogram every one to two years and over the course of the decade, at least one positive result for those women. >> and now they say that a false positive result means that you could be at a higher is risk of developing breast kanscancer later on, and so we have our medical contributor dr. natalie azar here. and when you read it on the face, it is alarming, but break it down for . >> and when you d d hear that, you say, i think that false positive means i'm in the clear. >> exactly, good news. >> so right before the s sment, itits really important for peopllto remember that if you get a false positive on the mammogram, it means something

so you will be referred for closer look or biopsy. and so you have a buyiuyiopsy which is classified as a benign lesion, and some of those is such as atypical plasia do indicate cancer down the line. aa so, some of the experts said this is not surprising, because even some of the lesions that we identify as benign do increase the cancer rate. >> do they tell you when you do the test, andndhey say, benign, but do they say, however, this might lead to x-y-z? >> 100%. and breast cancer is in the news all of the time as it should, and so,here is a cancerous lesion that we talk about all of the time, because sending a woman home say ging it is a benign lessn, and follow up in n year is not necessarily appropriate. i am not suggesting that people

who treat breast cancer do know that ththlesions do confer fofoa higher risk of cancer, and should be screened more frequently. >> and come back in 3 to 6 months for an ultrasound. and ththe is a relative risis and abssute risk. if you read the headlines they will say that the relative risk is 76% higher with a false 76% higher, but it is no. it is the absolute risk which is your individual risk for cancer is moderately elevated, , d so i wowot get mired in the statistics, but for women, even though it does increase your risk for cancer, it is true with a false positive, but it is slightly increased. >> and so what do you do? >> if it is a false positive, you say, doc, should i get screened in six months or three
