""you're watching kwwl, we've got you covered. this is the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. university of iowa president bruce harreld is apologizing for a comment he made at a recent staff council meeting... harreld apparently said teachers who aren't prepared, should be shot. one staff member spoke up about the comment. kwwl's kristin rogers has the story. university librarian lisa gardinier spoke up after she heard president bruce harreld say teachers who do not have their she calls what he said "horrifying and unacceptable.." in an email reply with gardinier, harreld initially replied " i likely will never be able to live to your expectations, but i will try." the response was not good enough for gardinier who called president harreld out for not addressing why she wrote him in the first place.

saying it was an "unfortunate and off the cuff remark," and he does not support gun violence in any way. he went on to say he has used the comment before many apoligized... i spoke with lisa gardinier on the phone... she said she believes harreld's comment wasn't made seriously, but said it's not something to joke about... killed while walking on campus monday morning...while they all hope for justice...police say the circumstances surrounding the hit and run crash aren't helping them get very far in the investigation... (nats of crosswalk) what was once just a busy crosswalk navigating students and faculty at iowa state university...has turned into a sobering memorial... "i prayed our father and ave maria." around 7 a-m monday morning... in the intersection of lincoln way and ash avenue...police say 18 year old i-s-u student emma-lee jacobs was suffering from injuries consistent with being struck by a car and died at a local hospital the driver fled the scene..."we really believe that at some point someone saw something and they will come forward and help us with the investigation" many say the intersection has a reputation for complaints. new years day in the rose bowl. of course, it's not quite the easy trip that iowa fans had going to indy just a couple weeks ago. kwwl's brad hanson joins us live now from the t-h media newsroom in dubuque. and brad, that lengthy trip to california means local travel agents have been busy. they sure have been--you're talking airfare, accomodation in california and of course tickets to the game. but i talked to one agent today who's been up to the task. angie harter has been hard at work, making sure people don't miss a very special trip. (angie harter, travel consultant) "the rose bowl. 25 years. it's been pretty special for the local people." travel headquarters put together a package for the package was announced that sunday, the phone was ringing off the hook. we had about 100 emails to send

"we've had some pretty remarkable fans, that really cost wasn't the issue. yes, they were more than willing, so the packages sold out because of that." popular christmas light display across the united states- but they are also catching the attention of theives here in eastern iowa. for 75-year-old marilyn walther, christmas lights have always reminded her of her late someone stole that from her..right out of her front yard kwwl's lauren moss spoke with the waterloo woman and she was

lights. this waterloo home is filled with christmas cheer. year to show it...marilyn decorate her home. "i had a set of the green and red ones on the house and then at the doorway i had the blue and white snowflakes and everybody commented, they were beautiful.." but come sundown, those lights won't be shining... someone stole them from her front yard. "i was so upset i cried and cried and i couldn't do anything all different.. it's a different set of lights and they were just fantastic" marilyn says she likes christmas lights because they remind her of her late husband.. did..i'll never be able to do it like he did but i at least thought this was a rememberance of him." but her lights are now gone.. "every place is sold out of them.. and sadly, marilyn says it's going to stay that way this

" i'm just sick about it...'i'm not putting anything else up this year. this is christmas you should be able to put up what you want to. and some good news...marilyn's house will be decorated for christmas this year. after airing this story in the five and six, many viewers emailed and called us asking how they could donate lights to marilyn. we're happy to say that waterloo police informed us an anonymous person donated christmas lights to her. the lights are the same as the ones that were stolen. a reporter experienced what could be the most unusual live shot ever. adam sallet of kimt in mason city was in rochester for a bank robbery. as the anchor sends it over to him, that's when things got strange. take a look.
