also known as -- a last-minute shopping frenzy... kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in the newsroom... amanda you caught up with some of these 11th hour shoppers... that's right ally -- believe or not -- a lot of shopping malls and stores are open today.... and many shoppers are grateful.... saying they need this key day to get ready for tomorrow... nat: i think a lot of people are lisa mckiney just finished her holiday shopping... " it was the last blanket in the store that i had my eye on a couple of weeks ago so it was like i hope it's there.... i finished too. "i took off today from work so that we could get a lot of the last minute stuff done." but christina's "its kind of unusual cause we should be at home getting the presents wrapped." she say's it's kind of late to be christmas shopping... "i mean it's like you had all "today im looking for stocking stuffers...that's always my last "just finished." "this is pretty late i guess. standup: just days ago the national retail federal released a report saying that about 90 percent of americans still have

shoppers had different opinions about the weather.... some said it helped them with their shopping... others said it caused them to delay their shopping because it doesn't feel like winter. and speaking of the weather... deadly storms ripped across the south and midwest last night into early this morning... at least seven people have died in the severe storms... three killed in mississippi -- you see a tornado here. among those who died was a young boy who was in a car that was here's aerials of some of the damage -- you can see debris scattered all around the neighborhood.. roofs ripped off.. homes barely recognizable. not far away.. several cars and trucks are heaped together in a mangled mess of metal... a volunteer fire department in mississippi destroyed by the heavy winds last night. they're hoping there aren't any major "it's gonna devastate it. i mean, we don't have, we run ems and out with a backhoe just in case

these firefigthers also serve as the paramedics for their county... in kentucky -- a couple in their 70's survived after their mobile home rolled over and down a hill in the storms... search and rescue crews say the couple was trapped inside the home with no way to get out.. it took crews about half an hour to get to the homeowners and free them... amazingly both only suffered minor injuries -- mostly scrapes and bruises... here's video of another tornado in central illinois. according to authorities there are no injuries at this point.... switching gears now... with an early holiday gift for breaks for wind energy in the new budget... this latest one- year extension for wind supports 73- thousand jobs nationally. but some in washington say - we can no longer afford 14 billion in tax breaks over the next ten iowa is a national leader in wind energy. two former iowa national guardsman receive the army commendation medal. former sergeant justin schmitt

event for iowans. for me, a 10 year old 5th grader at holy ghost school in dubuque, the event was searing. this tragedy represented a loss of innocence. it was a crime so terrible it haunts those who remember it to this day. i now think of three little girls at christmas. in december of 2012, the bodies of elizabeth collins and lyric cook were discovered in bremer county at seven bridges park. they had been abducted in evansdale while playing at meyers lake. like pamela, they were innocent young girls who loved their families and loved life. unlike pamela, the case of elizabeth and lyric has not been solved. there is no justice for elizabeth and lyric this christmas. the families of these girls will mark their 4th christmas this year without them. as i spend the holidays with my four children and two grandchildren this year, i will be thinking again of these girls who were robbed of their childhood and who will not be with their

hawkeyes ahead of the rose bowl. it's to be expected -- but what's surprising -- this business is in cyclone nation! sigler -- an ames based business -- makes t-shirts. just for the rose bowl, they've made about 30-thousand shirts. employees are working 12-hour shifts to crank out 3-thousand hawkeye quarterback c-j beathard is carrying on a family tradition by making the trip to pasadena... he's actually the third member of his family to take part in the rose bowl.... his great uncle pete quarterbacked u-s-c to a win in the 1963 game -- and another uncle -- kurt beathard -- coached the illinois wide receivers in 2008... that's awesome. i remember going to the rose bowl whenever and my family and i went down in college doing this. it's always been a dream of mine to play in a rose bowl game and now i'm getting an opportunity to do it -- coming up.... tips on coupling financial
