to late morning. rain continues through the afternoon as temperatures warm into the mid national guard soldiers returning today after providing flood relief to missouri. missouri has been in a state of emergency due to excessive flooding over the holidays displacing many people from their homes, closing major streets, and killing more than a dozen. the iowa national guard deployed from cedar rapids new year's day to provide hundreds of gallons of clean water to those in need. kwwls olivia mancino was there for their return to cedar rapids today. she joins us now live in the armed forces readiness center. the massive trucks were quite a sight to see coming in. after a six-day trip in missouri, the soldiers tell me they're happy to be home.

coming in earlier today here at the armed force readiness center here in cedar rapids . they deployed early on new year's day morning, and have worked non- stop providing nearly 500 thousand gallons clean water to more than 6 thousand residents in two counties in missouri. all of that water was used as a few soldiers i've spoken to during this process say this is the first time they've ever responded to a natural disaster like this. and one soldier's account of what he saw in missouri is breathtaking. you can hear from him in the story i'm working on for ten. news. thanks, olivia. firefighters spending the day training for ice and cold water rescues. training was at manhattan lake in ellis park. the cedar rapids department was involved in 8 water and ice related rescues in 2015. kwwl's kristin rogers spent the day at the lake obersiving this special type of training, kristin

it's calm here now, but earlier this area was full of firemen in dry suits working hard to learn the necessary tequniques to help save lives. firefighters can be seen sliding into ice water, it's not something that looks pleseant when watching, (cg: kristin rogers) "these suits are extremely insulated so rescuers can actually go into the ice water and stay warm." (cg: nathan goodlove/ firefighter) "super insulated, super boyant, and also a dry suit as well, helps us stay out there it's pretty comfortable being in one so." "so you're not too cold down they're all sweating so it's kind of nice." crews take turns playing victim, slipping into the water, while others work to complete the rescue. there is also training for firefighters to learn how to get themselves out of the water. "the roll tecnique where we just want to disburse our weight." it's an annual training to save lives, but following a tragic loss of a local teen just days ago, it hits home.

hits home pretty well we had quite a few guys that went down the importance is definetely there and realizing how much water we have in cedar rapids and surrounding areas it's pretty prevelent, it's something that's a high likelyhood of something happening so keeping up with that training is pretty paramount." i'm told every engine in town has an ice suit on board, so if something were to happen they would have one with them. this is because timing is critical in this type of rescue. we've got you covered live in cedar rapids, kristin rogers...kwwl news. the cedar rapids fire department will be back at it training next week where they will focus on technical and challenging open water rescues. continuing coverage... cedar

but it will stick out as a year analyst chris larimer... "i had one person describe it as it's been, you know a ferris wheel, unpredictable i think it's been all those things. chaotic a bit." but now candidates are getting serious. caucus day is quickly approaching here in iowa. "there are a number of candacyies that are absolutely depending on iowa and if they don't do well here then their campaigns are likely over. and many candidates see the importance of iowa too.. it's absolutely critical otherwise we wouldn't see 10-11 candidates coming to the state for the next 20 something dates. and that's to be expected, but can we expect any surprises? it's currently a tight race between iowa leader ted cruz and donald trump.. but will trump supporters show up on caucus day? if donald trump wins the caucuses or if he finishes within three points of lets say a ted cruz..that's going to be a huge surprise because that most likely means he was actually the caucuses and that's a big deal. obama did it in 2008 and
