morning.. we had some snow earlier, so there are some roads that have a coating early this morning... we haha fog out theee, too, with visibilities remaining at 2 miles or less over most of the viewing area. rain will continue to rack in today, with more snow mixing in this afternoon. temperatures will only climb a few more degrres and then will start to fall this afternoon as winds turn to the north. we have a very cold forecast ahead... i'll have more in a few minutes. our top story today: one of the hottest debates in our country
4:31 am
now and the resident hopes even more people start talking about it. last night, c-n-n hosted a town hall with the president about guns. it comes just days after he spelled out new executive actions -- he hopes -- will cut down n gun violence. he says he was disappointed the n- r-a did not show up for town hall -- saying hes invited the group to the white house repeatedly. the president says he respects gun owners whh have them to protect themselves and to hunt... but: all of us can agree that it do others harm... or... to do themselves harm. the president says he will not vote for any ccdidate -- even a
4:32 am
what he calls commonsense gun reform. there are new gun laws on the books in some states this year. in texas, thhre's a new open carry law. one restaurant has been offering discounts to customers who legally carry guns. that restaurant is now the target of threats. someone posted on facebook they'll shoot up the place tomorrow aa armed customers won't be able to stop the attack. "we're gonna open on saturday as usual, we're not gonna run food and we're gonna go about our business as if it was a regular day." police know#about the threats and will be at the restaurant totoorrow. the debate about guns takes a backseat on the campaign trail in iowa... as a former president drops in. president bill clinton making stops in eastern iowa -- campaigning for his wife hillary.. president clinton is campaigning for his wife, the democratic frontrunner. he stopped by new-bo city market in cedar rapidsor lunch and to
4:33 am
business owners, workers, and customers. he was also asked this by an n-b-c reporter. donald trump is again today your past could hurt your wife's campaign? i don't have a response. if he wins the republican nomination, we'll have plenty off time to talk about it if hillary wins. i have no interest in getting involved in their politics or doing anything except trying to helpp hillary. the former president spoke at events in cedar rapids andd dubuque ononthursday. hundreds turned out to hear him at the hotel julien. he talked about jobs, hillary's experience... but the most memorable moment of the night might've been this. "my phone's ringing...i'll have to call hillary back and explain why i can't t tke it." clinton stuck around for about 30 minutes after his speech to talk to people in tt crowd. on the republican side, senator ted cruz is making his way to
4:34 am
his bus tour across the state made several more stops yesterday -- including i i humboldt -- where he talked about a former democratic president. "jfk campaigned on cutting taxes, on five percent a year defeating the soviet communists. jfk would be tarred and fethered and thrown out of the modern democratic party." senator cruz will be in decorah today and waukon, , rawberry point, oelwein, new hampton and waverly tomorrow. we've been asking repeatedly for a sit down, 1-on-1 interview with him during his campaign. so far, we've been td he doesn't have time. we heard the same thing from senator bernie sanders campaign for months... until last night. he sat down with kwwl's ron steele for a one- on-one interview bout the issues -- and about "my guess is when we began,
4:35 am
question is, do i think we can wi yes, i do think we can win. but, your point is gg a large votee turnout, and that is what we are working to do." sanders says his plans call for a tax on wall street speculation... saying it's time for wall street to help the middle class. senator sanders kicks off his 4-day iowa tour at 10 this morning in cedar rapids at the double tree hotel. you can see mucuc more of thh sanders one-on-one interview in a steele report later this month. new this morning: what could be another bumpy ride for investors. the markets in china got off to a wild start today -- one day after a sharp drop in prices triggered a shutdown of trading. china's major stock indexes swung up and down, then rose more than two percent ii early trading.
4:36 am
the markets respond in the u-s later this morning. yesterday, the dow closed down almost 400 points. it's off more than five percent to start the new year. we're also keeping an eye on oil prices -- which fell to yesterday. a big question is whether that will lead to another drop at the pump. in iowa, a man is shot three times, along with two dogs inside a home it happened in keokuk. thh victim is ian keefe. he's 32. we don't know how he's doing this morning. that information has not been released. police say two suspects wearing masks left in a car. one facebook page about police leads to anothee. with two very different messages. earlier this week, we found out about a page encouraging others to target waterloo police officers. the waterloo police chief believes it was created after these pictures popped up... with the caption i've got my eyes on you. those pictures were taken after
4:37 am
a waterloo wanted to counter that facebook page -- with his own. this one tells police -- it's been liked thousands of times. i created the page and it was a rebuttal page, i ddnt expect anything, bbt i started adding a few things and it was up to 50 people then later in the afternoon it was up to 500. he says -- now he's looking to help organize meet and greets between police and kids at places like bowling alleys. most of us remember the rocky scene -- where he's running through the streets and up the steps. it was dramatic and inspiring. cue up the eye of the tiger music again... this time for a norwegian sppnter. slow-motion videos of her training went viral. she is seen leaping up several steps at a time in south africa, jumping in the gym carrying a barbell on her shoulders and throwing a shotput. the jumping and weight lifting are

"i never knew i would score that much in a game but my expectations were to help my team but i never knew i'd score that many points." "me coaching cali, it's like a joy because her attitude and humility has transitioned into our teammates." "she can shoot from anywhere. she can just do most things other people can't do. up and down the court she don't need breaks she just keeps going and i have to keep going with her." safe to say - for this five-foot-four point guard - the best is yet to come. we still have a lot to get to this
