a family is left without their home after it was destroyed by a fire. multiple fire crews worked to put the blaze out but as you can imagine it was not easy in these frigid conditions. it happened in the 1900 block of paris road in central city this morning kwwl's kristin rogers was on scene this morning, she has been talking with firefighters and digging in to just how difficult that's right i spoke with the central city fire chief after the fire but i also spent time here at the hiawatha fire department hearing all about what it's like to try and put a fire out in this cold, let me tell you it does not sound easy. here is a look at that central city home following the fire, it

be frozen solid. you can see icycles hanging off various parts of the home from the water used to fight the blaze. it's not this one incident though, these conditions are tough for fire crews who have experienced them time to fight a fire, there's time you walk out and you're a big icycle, you come out of the fire and you're a big this scene, the family was able to escape. i'm told it was a family dog that actually woke them up and alerted them to the fire. i will have more insight on how fire crews successfully work in these tempertures coming up tonight at 6 o clock. we've got you covered live, kristin rogers ...kwwl news. we're told this fire started in the chimney. the central city fire cheif says to always remember to check your fire places and wood burning stoves and have them cleaned if needed. with these bitter cold temperatures - the concern that

waterloo schools have a new building to help prevent that problem - a bus barn... durham schools services moved into the building in july. people showed up at 4 this morning to get the buses ready for their morning route. continuing coverage now. an iowa family receiving a record- setting settlement from the city of waterloo following their son's death. 22-year old derrick ambrose junior died after being shot by officer kyle law in 2012. police reports show ambrose waved a gun at a group of people before he took off and led an stay down, but he didn't comply. thats when law shot him the city will pay out two and a half million dollars to ambroose's parents and lawyers, following the wrongful death civil suit. kwwls olivia mancino digging into this story...she joins us now live a grand jury found officer kyle law was justified to use lethal situation,

stay down after police ordered him to. now, nearly four years later, a civil suit is settled with the city of waterloo heres the scene following that november night police responded to a fight outside of the new world lounge in waterloo police say ambrose had a gun that night, and they concluded he tossed it in the bushes before making contact with police. i spoke to derrick ambrose sr. today, ambrose jr's father. he says this two and a half million dollar settlement was never about the money. "the economics part can never put a value on my son, my son was up and going, he was with me in my custody, and derrick jr was with me and going to school up and finishing school up" ambrose sr. is a long-time military officer he says he doesn't want to characterize the entire waterloo police department based on the actions of one officer

the gap between the police department and the community with this settlement i reached out to waterloo police chief dan trelka who gave the following statement "i want you to put yourself in the shoes of the officer in this situation" we've got you covered live in ...kwwl news. we also reached out to mayor quentin hart, who was serving on the shooting he said "the loss of life in any situation is unfortunate and tragic, and im going to look into the particulars of this case to try to make sure it will not happen again in the future" a woman arrested and charged with murder -- accused of killing her ex- husband with a baseball bat. dolores flynn is charged with 2nd degree murder. police say she killed 72-year-old gary breckenridge. breckenridge was found dead in his home a week ago with an injury consistant with being hit by a baseball back. investigators say flynn ditched the bad in a culvert near the house.

muslims in eastern iowa will soon have a new place to worship. dubuque's small islamic community is building a mosque. kwwl's a joyous time for dubuque's muslim community -- they'll soon have a new sanctuary. "we are excited to do this and after years of fundraising, they finally have approval to build a mosque. right now...about sixty dubuque. the issue is -- it's located in the basement of a now is too small...it doesn't meet our needs." "and this is the location where the mosque will be built. i'm told it will be able to fit up to 150 people." the site is located on dubuque's west end...on the 4900 "cause the community's kind of growing...as we've seen in the last 10 years." and although situations throughout the world have made some people not accepting of muslims -- members say it's not the same here in dubuque. sioux city representative chris hall says, in the past, lawmakers have settled on school funding, and then crafted the rest of the budget around that. that underscores the importance of settling on an increase in school funding that the house, senate, and governor can all agree on. here's the problem... last spring the house passed a plan for 2016-17 school funding with a 2- percent increase. the senate has passed its own plan with four-percent increase. and, today, the governor told me he supports a 2- point-45 city "we need to get the numbers to budgets in the middle of april. so, i know its a priority of possibly can." by law, school districts have to set their budgets by april 15th

kate del castillo - el chapo was apparently infatuated with the soap opera star. guzman was arrested last week - after escaping from his cell in a maximum security prison six months ago. a hearing in front of a military court tomorrow - for the army sergeant at the heart of a dangerous prisoner exchange. sergeant bowe bergdahl faces charges of desertion and endangering fellow soldiers. the hearing will be at fort bragg. he was held captive by the taliban for five years - and released during a prisoner exchange in 2014. a teenager is in custody and charged with murder - accused of killing his father. michael thomas goodwin, junior... a 16 year old, is now behind bars and charged with first degree murder... in the death of his father. the iowa department of criminal investigation says 39-year-old michael thomas goodwin, senior, was found dead at a home in rural davis county on december 13th.
