memphis police say one of four men in masks demanded money from ludvigson, and shot him when he tried to run away. no arrests have been made yet in this case. kwwl's brad hanson joins us live now from the t-h media newsroom in dubuque. and brad, you got a chance to sit down with the family today--what did they have to say? like any family in this situation, they're still trying to figure out why this would happen to a loved one. but they also spoke in depth about the person lonnie was, fondly remembering their son and brother. kind words said "people adored him" and fond memories shared of their loved one, mother) "we just have a lot of memories of his loving touch. his loving, healing touch. and he got all the muscles." his family says lonnie was a determined man--one who put his heart into everything he pursued.

in the army, serving in operation desert storm, to his fight with cancer--a battle which he won 12 years ago, they say lonnie cared more about others than himself. "so, so tender hearted. when he was in desert storm. he was with the national guard out of cook in the medical unit, and he could hear the fighting in the distance, the guns going off, and it just bothered him knowing what was happening." they say he was quick to fight for injustices of any kind--an irony they recognize and struggle with, in his death. i spoke with memphis police this afternoon--they tell me this is one of 12 homocides they've had in 2016--an unusually high number, they say.

standing outside her apartment building..and he told her he needed to get in but...forgot his keys- and she let him right in. thats when police say he ditched the cash beihnd a door- and get meterologist kyle kiehl was near the apartment complex where police say jon ellingson hid the cash- he allegedly stole from first national bank. kyle says he was taking his dog out- when all the police presence in the area caught his eye... but he could have never guessed- what he was aboutto see.. even know their neighbors- and we are iowa nice here- but he says use your best judgement before you open your door to someone you don't know...because as we saw here...it could be a criminal. weve got you covered.lauren moss ...kwwl news. thanks lauren- ellingson of cedar falls has been charged with second degree robbery. a 19-year-old man from independence is given up to 11 years in prison for vehicular homicide and drunken driving. authorities say anthony fogle was driving his pickup on november 1, 2014, when it crashed in fayette county, killing a passenger and injuring himself and another man in the truck. the mother of the deceased testified at the hearing and said since her son died, her family will never have normal. the iowa supreme court says the state is making progress in addressing racial disparity in its criminal justice system. more than 700 workers received training helping them recognize biases that may contribute to

the court also says three iowa counties are working on pilot projects that try to eliminate racial disparity in the juvenile justice system. countdown to the caucus... republican presidential hopeful jeb bush downplayed the role of ads in winning voters support. the former florida governor, discussing campaign ads at breakfast event in urbandale this morning. bush said iowa voters "have a way of kind of filtering all this out and making their decisions based on the information they have." his super pac has spent more than $60 million so far on ads, more than any other campaign or super pac. powerball fever has hit eastern iowa. the jackpot at more than a billion dollars....the largest jackpot in powerball history. kwwl's hillary maglin has the details on how lottery winners can make smart financial decisions. with the powerball prize at more than one billion

night and linger through friday. is on the way back...ready or not. branstad said he does not want syrian refugees coming to iowa, that is not stopping area high school students from becoming pen pals with syrian refugees from a world away. kwwl's kristin rogers spoke directly with the students who say they have formed bonds with the refugees, kristin? i'm at linn mar high school where ten students are taking part in this. the oppertunity came to them through their teacher david swaney. when david swaney's friend contacted him asking if david swaney/ government teacher, linn mar high school) "anytime that students can get real life experience one-on-one speaking with a syrian refugee stories of our time, there is nothing better." the students write letters by hand and then upload them online, then, they receive
