""you're watching kwwl, we've got you covered. this is the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. police make an arrest inna fatal hit-and-run that killed a student on the iowa state university campus. the incident happening a little more than a month ago. the victim is 18- year-old emmalee jacobs -- a student at the university -- originally from urbana. investigators determining she was hit by a cy-ride bus driven by 23-year- old benjamin clague. he is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. more on the arrest tonight -- every message was like help finally answer the question: december morning. their investigation puts this man, cyride driver benjamin clague, behind the wheel. through follow up interviews with the suspect and a few of his friends and some forensic analyss and pretty i itensive review of the video, we determined that he was the

struck and killed emmalee that morning that on board bus video didn't catch the moment 18 year old emmalee jacobs was hit and killed. but when police listened to the audio recording, they say they knew they had their suspect. you can hear the bus striking emmalee and that's really what tipped the case for us at the next stop on his cyride route, clague was seen getting out and inspecting the bus. police believe he knew that he'd hit someone and should have come forward. we have no doubt that he struck her that morning and at some point, he knew what he did. most people were thinking that it wasn't a bus driver. it was so sad, i know. i'm glad they finally found someone who did it i guess closure for the case which is good... but a bittersweet ending for police... waiting to make the call to emmalee's family, knowing that answers may bring peace of mind but won't mend their broken hearts. there will be some

course, none of this bring backs emmalee. we continue to keep the family in our thoughts and prayers. we spoke with emmalee's father brad jacobs today. he says he doesn't know if you can call this arrest closure, but says it was nice to have it resolved. emmalee graduated from center point urbana high school last spring before heading to iowa state. her pastor says she spent most of her life going to center point united methodist church. as you can imagine he says the jacobs family. (cg: mike ellson/ pastor at center point urbana united methodist church) "up to this point it's to why this is all taken place family in a way that at least we

move forward in trying to understand why." emmalee's father told kwwl's kristin rogers today quote, "the arrest stirs up more feelings and sorrow that the person didn't come forward and police had to find them." and he isn't alone - - following the accident, a friend and co-worker of emmalee's wrote a letter online, asking the driver to come forward. kwwl's jessica hartman spoke with her before the arrest and again today. emily mensen went to high school with jacobs and also worked at a daycare in their hometown with her. mensen tells me she wrote the letter looking for answers - - and peace for jabobs' family and whom? - how? - what if? - - all left unanswered for more than a month.
10:04 pm
make it through, if they come up to me and ask where the other emmalee is at. i can't give them an answer. all the little kids that just loved her. what am i suppose to say to them?" it was those questions she hoped to answer with this letter - asking the driver to do the right thing. she wrote - "the is no closure. we are all still wondering." now with an arrest in the case - - "now that i know who it is. know the vehicle. i am replaying the scene constantly in my mind." it is a haunting image - that has mensen still asking what if? police say there is evidence - beejamin clague knew he hit jacobs. "you can't help, but do so. i would like to think that she would be still recovering, but she would have a fighting chance and emmalee was a fighter." we'll never know the answer to
