republicans will be battling for the final word in tonight's presidential debate. the biggest topic involving the debate is front- runner donald trump skipping the debate. trump is skipping because he said he was treated unfairly in the first fox debate back in august. regardless, the show goes on and the remaining candidates will be lookiningain some ground on trump who's lead continues to grow in iowa. the debate is set for eight tonight and will be broadcasted on fox news channel. even though trump is skipping the debate, he will still be busy campaigning. trump will host an event to benefit veterans organizations tonight at drake university. the event is scheduled to begin at 8-pm...which will be the same time as the fox news debate. two other republican candidates will be joining trump at his event - gov. mike huckabee and sen. rick santorum. both candidates said they are free at that time since they are in

fellow candidates ae weighing in on trump's decision to skip tonnght's debatee senator marco rubio is calling it all a sideshow... the republican presidential candidate has been running third in the polls in iowa behind trump and cruz. he says it's time for the campaigns to get serious... and senator ted cruz...who's polling in second behind trump in iowa...continues to challenge trump to a one-on-one debate... "and i'm going to propose a venue, western iowa tech, saturday night in siouxcity, we already have it reserved." cruz does plan to debate tonight in des moines... on the democratic side, bill clinton is in iowa campaigning for hillary clinton....today he started the morning at wartburg college... he brought up how faith shaped hillary's life... ttking about how she was raised methodist. he also talked about falling in love with hillary...recalling the first time they met..... all across the library... the library long skinny builidng. she said look if you're gonna keep staring at me and i'm going to hillary rodam. what's your name? at the moment i couldnt

he said the first time he saw her he was a little bit in awe of r... the former president aso talked about hillary's stance on college education, gun rights and women's rights. some black hawk county voters are worried how they'll participate in the caucuses -- if they don''t have a ride while neither e democrats or republicans will be officially providing transportation... they tell us they're making arrangements for those people to ride with other voters. they say some outside organizations may also provide transportation. with the iowa caucus drawing closer and closer and candidates spending more and more on ads, are the candidates getting their money's worth or in other words, can iowan's identify who's who? at a diner in des moines, voters were asked to identify each presidential cndidates by their head shots. some candidates were easy to pick out like trump, clinton and sanders but beyond that some needed a little help. rk: you're stumped?

at a mcdonald's in northeast des moines. other events are planned today, ending with a short march through downtown and then rally at the iowa events center, site of a gop debate. a popular political hh spot will soon be under new ownership. we're talking about the famous hamburg inn number two in iowa city. it's been in the panther family for more than 68 years and has become an icon in the city welcoming many politicians over the years. kwwl's kristin rogers spoke with the owner today just days before he plns on signing the papers to sesel the resturaunt. for daviddanther the hamburg inn no. 2,"nats" has spending a couple years of his childhood living above the resturaunt. "it was like a moment frozen in time when that tragedy happened" penn-goestch was a finalist in the teacher in space project, among many others around the country. she always wanted to be an astronaut. this project was her chance. "i remember my mother callin me and saying well at least we would have been comforted doing something we knew you always wanteddto do" she was teaching middle school in mount pleasant at the time. though she wasn't chosen for the mission, she made friends with "the day after was a blur, i was talking to a lot of media, and "it's very hard" fate didn't chose penn-goetsch that day, but she says she's constantly thinking about those that lost their lives doing what they loved. i asked her if the tragedy has changed her view on space travel and she said no, she believes the spirit of adventure is still out there, as it should be.
