ron is off tonight. a showdown -- without a front- runner...just four days before the caucuses, seven g- o-p candidates take the debate stageen des moines tonight. donald trump skipping the fox news debate tonight... what we saw was a three-way tussle between ted cruz, marco rubio and jeb bush...they had heated rounds on immigration. although the moderators wanted to bring up trump -- those on stage want to look at the big picture. "it's not about donald trump. he's an entertaining guy. he's greatest country on earth and a president who has systematically destroyed many of the things that made america special." "well chris, i apologize to nobody for the vigorousness for which i will fight terrorism, go after isis, hunt them down wherever they are and utterly and compltely destroy isis." "we need to arm directly the kurds, embed our troops with the iraqi military, re-engage with the suni tribe leaders, get

of the military once and for all." experts say one of the strongest performers tonight: jeb bush. they say he came out the most aggressive tonight trump instead spending his time hosting a special event at drake university benefiting veteran organizations. d joining him were the last two iowa caucus winners -- rick santorum and mike huckabee. and trump claiming more cameras were at his event tn at the debate just down the street. a possible snow storm moving in for next week --let's go to storm track seven chief meteorologist mark schnackenberg now who's tracking 7 weather team. see the screen for your complete weather information. here is additional forecast information from the kwwl stormtrack 7 weather team: we have not had a lot of sunny days around here lately. that trend is going to continue as the

lunch rooms and libraries. right now, the candidates are organizing and hoping to catch fire at the end. voters are organizing themselves -- and some have questions about the process. kwwl's jerry gallagher with some of those answers in this caucus class. "wow!" "well, whoa! wow!" "trump, trump, trump" it's almost time for the hand shaking and speech making to end. 315 days after the first major candidate announced a run for the white house, the first official test happens monday night in iowa. "we're making a big decision." - and the democratic race is through - and for some - it starts with the rules. some people have a different description: "it's crazy the system of yours.
10:04 pm
democrats meet in their precincts monday night. it's like a neighborhood meeting. it starts at 7 o'clock sharp so if you need to register, you have to do it beforehand. from there, they divide up into preference groups, but if one candidate fails to be considered viable, which typically means - getting 15-percent - they have to convince others to join their group or disband and align with someone else. that's a scenario that could play out - and could help swing the final the winner. using a formula that. well, we'll just say is not a simple head count. so what about the gop? it hasn't changed much over the years. check out kwwl's "republicans make caucus-going a little easier than the democrats. after signing in and finding their precinct, they waste little time getting down to business." "from here, the caucus process is a simple one. for the republicans, it's time to take a poll of

determine the winner. of course, that doesn't mean everything will run smoothly." "pray it isn't snowing like it was that one year. it was incredible." thanks to the 2012 caucuses, they also might be praying for accuracy. "we had a little problem last time around (laughs) but it all worked out in the process, but it's a fun night and an interesting night. and an educational night." so what can we expect monday night? "i'm thinking three tickets and right now, it's looking like the third ticket is the most likely the nominee." kwwl political analyst chris larimer sizes up the two republicans who've been leading the field in iowa. "i'd be very surprised if either one goes on to be the nominee." "that third ticket out of iowa could be the golden ticket." which has happened before. "winning the iowa caucus is a plus in the system, but it's not a guarantee of anything." what it can do is build - or kill momentum - for a campaign. and turnout is always a key.

140,000. "but if that gets over 150, 160,000, then that's to the benefit of trump and sanders." since the 1970s when iowa moved front and center to be first in the nation, the caucuses have helped thin the herd. there's been a lot of handwringing across the country about iowa in the front seat, but anyone who questions the legitimacy of the iowa caucuses -- consider this: in 1980, george bush surprised performance paved the way for him to become vice president under reagan. and eventually president. without his first place finish in 1980 in iowa, it's possible there would've been no bush dynasty. and also no barack obama in the white house. the illinois senator won iowa in 2008 - with a record turnout - and kept on rolling. "it's an interesting evening and there will be surprises." but from who, what. or even where?
