grateful for the nearly 15- thousand volunteers -- showing their support -- right here in the hawkeye state. continuing coverage... early voting is available today for the waterloo schools special election tomorrow. you can vote at the black hawk county courthouse today from eight this morning until four thirty. the auditor's office is really encouraging people to come out today -- due to tomorrow's forecast. he says the iowa secretary of state may postpont an election due to a weather emergency -- but he says --you shouldn't count on it. one person is dead and several homes and cars are now damaged following a winter storm moving through southern california. in san diego, a driver died when a giant tree fell onto their car.

traffic was at a standstill for several hours near the california- nevada border after a 29-vehicle crash. 25 vehicles and four semi-trucks were involved in the pile-up. it's unknown how many people were hurt or the extent of the injuries. law enforcement believe the winter weather and snowy conditions played a factor in causing the crash. two virginia tech students are charged in connection with the abduction and murder of a virginia girl. a vigil was held over the weekend for 13-year-old nicole lovell. her body was found over the weekend in north carolina. state and federal authorities are continuing to investigate. two escaped inmates being taken back to jail after more than a week on the run. they were captured over the weekend after being found in a stolen van. a woman alerted police when she saw a matching description of the vehicle. investigators say they've already tightened security at the jail... with more changes to come after an investigation. you've heard the cat stuck in a tree story before - but in colorado, firefighters had to

owner. the owner tried to get his cat out of the tree when his ladder fell. firefighters then put the ladder back up for the owner - he came down - but the cat was still stuck! finally - rescuers took a bucket him down. people are coming together to support a retired police officer and his k-9 officer companion. ohio state law mandates if an officer retires before the k-9, he or she forfeits their right to purchase the dog. but the retired officer doesn't want to be separated from his dog ajax... so his friend started a go-fund- me page, where more than "i'm amazed at everybody who the support... it's just amazing." all extra proceeds will be donated to an organization that provides bullet proof vests for k-9 officers. it's
