you cards for the firefighters who rescued her, her brother and mother. the children spent the night at the hospital but t ty are doing well today- as they played with their cousins. avery said she was scared of the i said it sounds like the fire alarm? i heard the fire alarm and i just walked to the bathroom because i thought it might be a littlelemore cold in there to protect me from the hotness of the fire." their home unfortunately is destroyed- now only rubble and ash because of the fire. but because a neighbor called in...firefighters were abbe to rescue all of them safely. their aunt tells me there are many heros, including the neighbors and rescue crews who they want to thank for saving their lives. their mother is at the university of iowa hospitals and clinics for smoke inhalation but she is expected to be okay.

family and how you canhelp, coming up tonight at 10. we've got you covered, lauren moss kwwl news. thanks lauren- the cause of the fire remains under investigation. an early morning fire takes hours for firefighters to put out. the fire started inside a duplex located in 200 block of western avenue in waterloo. firefighters arrived at the duplex around four a m to find smoke cominggut of the house. you can see flames coming out of the second floor windows as they entered the house. the firefighters told us the wind was making it tough for them to put out the fire. the wind was also causing problems with the smokk- the smoke wws blown all over the place including into the faces of the fire fighters on the ladders. when the sun came up, the battle was still going. as you can ee, firefighters were forced to break windows and poww saw t trough the house to reach parts of the fire. another problem the fireman faced, was the bitter cold. temperatures were so low last night, the firemen had to chip away

halls today to discuss branstad's plan to privatize medicaid. the new plan wwll have those on medicaid going to private companies for their services, the transition is expected to start march 1st. kwwl's kristin rogers was at tte town hall in coralville this morning, there was another later this afternoon in cedar rapids , she joins us live from the cedar rapids newsroom. many of those at the town halll shared their stories about how they are impacted by medicaid and their concerns about the changes to come. "about thirty people gathered here at the coralville public their concerns about the privitization of medicaid many of those concerns were related to unknowns about what exactly is going to happen to certain companies we spoke with a mother who says her three children are on medicaid and she doesn't understand the desire for a change. the game, so that's why i i on't understand why are you changing a fabulous system when other states are

a decision to boost a shooting sports program is causing outrage from alumni at an iowa college it's gaining popularity at simpson college, and now the school plans to hire a full-time coach. opponents say it not only promotes guns on campus but it's against the college's religious beliefs.. but thh president believes the program will not put students or staff in harms way. people in cedar rapids are learning how to keep the peace in hostile tuations. the puporse is to teach regular people how to solve issues before they escalate - and possibly become violent. the training is similar to training police officers go through. most people attending thought it was a step in the right direction for cedar pids. attendees learned different ways to diffuse difficult situations involving themselves or others. the city is already planning more training sessions. police identify the man who was found inside a fire- damaged home after he resisted officers' rescue attempts. police say neil johnston died during the fire in des moines early tuesday. officers say johnston wouldn't open a door and threatened them, claiming he had a gun. that's when officers say they saw aafire inside. the officers broke into the home and tried to rescue johnston, but he resisted. firefighters put out the fire and found johnston's body. investigators say the fire was intentionally started. an invasive insect that kills ash trees is confirmed in anther eastern )owa county. the iowa department of agriculture announced esday the emerald ash borer was found in trees on the university of iowa campus. university of iowa officials
