approppiate living conditions. and.. bernie sanders and hillary clinton going head-to-head in milwaukee. ""you're watching kwwl, the news at ten." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. curiosity is killing our children. we're talking about accidental shootings -- shootings that are happening in our own living rooms. it's important to note, this is a story about kids -- and gun safety...not an ant- gun storyy-- it is not a pro-gun story...this has nothing to do with gun rights. guns are not always locked up and put away. oh! oh my goodness! oh my a room full of toys - a hidden gun - and curious beginning - seven mothers - eight children - all in the preschool and kindergarten age range...coming together at the
10:01 pm
experiment...an experiment that could save lives. (19:24:47 - :55) there's no possibility that there can be an accident. no ammunition, the gun's not functional. cause it's an actual weapon. lieutenant aaron mccelland with waterloo p-d - briefing the moms...showing them the gun that will be used in this experiment. he will hide it in this room...but the big question - will one of these kids - one of their babies - pick that gun up. (19:26:18 - :26) jenny bachmann she's never been exposed to a real one. i'm hoping she doesn't start now. what do you think? i don't think so. (19:28:56) jodi do i think he'll pick it up? absolutely. (19:28:03 - :17) ethan has grown up with them. rifles, handguns locked in safe. we taught him to respect. guns don't go off themselves. you
10:02 pm
(19:25:48) sinead do you think she'll pick up a gun? i hope not. i'm pretty nervous. i don't know. i'd say no. (19:31:14) vickie i don;t know if she's going to think it's a toy squirt gun. i'm curious to what her reaction will be...she knows to stay away. (19:30:07) karen do you thinkthey'll pick up that gun? probably. i'm a little nervous. (19:32:12) do you think your son will pick up that gun? yes. i absolutely it up.p.he'll probably want to see it. he's inquisitive. it's time to fin out. hidden caeras are in place in a conference room...the moms are ushered into our master control where they will be able to watch everything unfold - live. (nats of kids coming into room 19:48:34)
10:03 pm
it took just 15 seconds... (19948:46 - :57) uh oh there it is. dominick got it. dominick starts to walk towards the door - but then comes back...the gun still in his hand. (19:49:23) oh he still has it? is he going to put it back? dominick puts it back...but it only takes seconds before it's in the hands of another child... (19:50:42 - :54 cut in half) oh! oh my goodness! oh my god! not only does this young boy pick up the gun - he points it right at this little girl - right at her head...he points it at another young girl. he's shooting my daughter. he's pointing it at her. (19:51:35 show mom crying...mom turns around) it becomes too much for the moms to watch... (19:53:02 - 19:53:11)
10:04 pm
the gun changes hands again...and again... it's waved in the hair... it's pointed directly at one another. (19:54:20 - :30 mcclelland) that's typical for young kids. curiosity. everything is a toy in their world. unless we educate them and let them know sometimes it's not. the experiment is over but the curiosity is not - take a look at when i walk into the room... (19:53:16) (nats) olivia! this young girl walking towards me...holding the gun pointed right at me... (nats) whwht is that? a gun? can i have it? no. it's time for these young kids to come face to face with a police office - and thei moms. i didn't think it was real. (19:59:28) i thhk it was just a toy. gun... (19:59:22/ splice to 20:00:08 ) mom real quick, you're getting pretty emotional? what's going on? it happened so quickly.
10:05 pm
experiment...but it quukly became very real for these parents... (20:05:40 ) worst case scenario, he could have hot somebodyyif that was a real gun. to be a parent on terrifying. (20:12:20 - :37) we haven't had that conversation and he was the first to pick it up. i'm scared. that wws scary for . what to do and what not to do. (20:06:44 - :07:04) it's made me think about a lot more. watching that gun being pointed at my daughter, that's kids who did not pick up that gun - but on this night their moms, are still very much shaken. (20:07:30) i was really upset that he didn't find someone and tell them. (20:04:43 - :05) no i thought she would be more proactive. sorry. and tell somebody. that was scary for mommy to see how quickly that escalated. - tell a parent right away. (20:08:07) me
10:06 pm
guns...conversation?? splice to (20:09:14 - :20) until they know that sometimes ix's not a toy, these accidents will happen. (20:00:34 - :40) you just shake because if that was real, half of these kids could really be injured right now. injured - or dead. (20:07:59) i'm still shaking. this story was drumming up so much talk before it even aired -- but think about this -- we as responsible adults talk to our kids every day about drugs -- now there arrnot drugs in every house or neighborhood but we still talk to them about the dangers of coming into contact
10:07 pm
you're right amanda --bottom line is----it's all about responsible gun care and ownership, educating our kids and ourselves prevent accidents. and only two kids didn't pick up that attention to it. and ron those two kids are tte ones who have guns in their house -- and their parents have talked extensively about guns...their curiosity is gone. some snow in the forecast -- let's go to storm track seven chief meteorologist mark schnackenberg now who's tracking it all. from the kwwl stormtrack 7 weather team. see the screen information from the kwwl stormtrack 7 weather team: light snow will track southeast the snow is in parts of eastern iowa. the best chance to have a few snow showers, this
