plus... republican presidential candidates squaring off in south carolina last night. we have a recap of the latest g-o-p debate. then... we are learning more about the man who died in an apartment details on the way. but first, good morning and welcome to today in iowa.. as we take a live look outside.... thanks so much for joining us this morning. moss. let's go right to storm track seven meteorologist eileen loan for a check of our snowy forecast. eileen.... winter weather advisory continues over the entire kwwl viewing area through this morning. roads are becoming partially to completely covered in snow and visibilities may be reduced as these bands track through. temps are in the teens with southeast winds ta 10-20 mph. we will keep the snow into the afternoon although it will become more scattered toward the evening. highs will climb into the 20s. we will keep a chance of snow in the

warmer temperatures on the way. i'll have more details in a few minutes. kwwl viewing area through this evening. we have several bands of light to moderate snow tracking through the area this morning. roads are becoming partially to completely covered in snow and visibilities may be reduced as these bands track through. temps are in the teens with southeast winds ta 10-20 mph. we will keep the snow into the afternoon although it will become more scattered toward the evening. highs will climb into the 20s. we will keep warmer temperatures on the way. i'll have more details in a few minutes. an iowa police officer shot and killed a person after responding to a drug call at a hotel this weekend... this happening in urbandale near des moines... officers were called to the holiday inn on merle hay road on saturday morning... when police arrived -- they found three people in the hotel lobby.

the people pulled out a gun -- and started shooting at the officers. suspected shooter. no names have been released at this time. crash this weekend. the crash happened in bremer county yesterday morning... authorities say a car didn't stop at a stop sign and then another car. the car that was struck rolled into a nearby ditch... the crash is still under investigation this morning... continuing coverage this morning -- we are hearing from the neighbors of a man who died in an apartment fire this weekend. we first broke you the news yesterday on today in iowa. the fire happened in the 16- hundred block of mount carmel street -- just before midnight late friday... authorities confirm 53-year-old ray reed was inside the apartment -- and died from injuries... kwwl's olivia mancino was on scene -- and has more for us this morning... piles of soot lay in packed snow

apartment saturday morning. this tarp covers the rest of the charred remains from inside. "i heard the sirens but i didn't look what was going on" lynne hodge lives in an apartment across the street. her grandkids were sleeping in the front room when the apartment caught fire. "my son told me about it this morning i didn't realize how bad well into saturday morning... they say they could see heavy he suffered severe burns. "thats terrible i feel sorry for the family" hodge moved to the neighborhood nearly four years ago. she says everyone who's lived here, including reed, is very thankfully, the fire didn't spread to neighboring apartments--they seem to be undamaged. but it's a scary sight for lynne hodge and her grandkids to see out their front window. hodge says she's praying for the

that was olivia mancino reporting... authorities say the fire doesesnot appear to be suspicious -- but the cause remains under investigation today... the f-b-i is investigating claimsof young students being held in concrete isolation boxes... six former midwest academy students in keokuk say they dreaded the cell- like rooms -- and were forced to hear recordings of other students screaming. the f-b-i and state are investigating claims of abuse at that academy. we reached out to the owner and have not heard back. this weekend -- our nation lost one of the most influential supreme court justices. justice scalia was found dead on saturday morning while on a trip in south texas... authorities believe the 79 year old died in his sleep of natural causes.. he became the first italian- american justice in u-s supreme
