are getting around in these snowy conditions. and the very latest -- following the death of supreme court justice scalia. thanks for joining us tonight -- i'm macleod hageman. more than 30 cars were involved in a massive accident on the interstate this afternoon. it happened on interstate 80 west -- near west branch. kwwl's kristin rogers responded to the scene -- and files this report. a picture is worth one- thousand words. each of these were captured by kwwl viewers. you can see traffic backed up for miles, west branch. iowa state patrol tells us a 5 car collision happened around noon, shortly after, another accident, this time impacting 28 vehicles. nearly five les from the scene you can see traffic accident drivers tell me they witnessed. lucky for him he arrived near this scene when it (cg: jim oftelie) "i passed it heading east on 80, it more to normal but cars were still there all cracked up." normal but cars were still there all cracked up." you can see photo, certainly not the gift anyone wanted this valentines day weekend. we've got you covered in ceear county, kristin rogers, kwwl news. the west bound lanes opened later in the afternoon. three people were injured during the accident -- and their conditions are unknown at this hour. in another part of the midwest -- a major set of accidents -- stretching quite the distance in indiana. afternoon. crews say 40 to 50 cars were involved. there werr several crashes along a two-mile stretch of road. police believe weather was the biggest factor in the crash.

morninng's storm -- where people battled the weather in waterloo. it was tricky traveling conditions for drivers -- and several people had to get around by walking. meanwhwhle in dubuque -- the snow causes some unsafe driving conditions around town. police say there's been multiple reports of car accidents -- but no serious injuries. as for the roads -- the city has been ploong snow for uch of the day. they're focusing on main streets -- then will move on to residential areas overnight. some people are fidinging unique ways to get around town. "well, the car i thought it's as you can see here -- that woman ditched her car today -- and got around town on is.

an iowa man is seriously injured after a snowmobiling accident. it happened west of boone along u-s highway 30. a 35-year old man was traveling in a line of snowmobiles on the median of the highway. his left front ski got caught on snow -- and then it snapped the connection -- sending him air born. he was traveling nearly 60- mile-per hour and was thrown 150 feet before landing in the shoulder. his helmet was not fastened at the time of the crash. he was taken to the hospital -- and later aar-lifted to a second hospital. the accident remains under investtgation. two men rob a convenience store and shoot a police officer -- who is now in the hospital. his condition has been described as -- critical. "i'm just really nervous and terrified. i can't hardly breathe right now." the two men robbed this convenience store in clarksdale, mississippi. police say the officer noticed something susppcious. when he went to respond -- police say one of the men shot the

the two men left him in the street. that's where other officers found him . authorites say they are still trying to track down the people responsible. a man in oregon is expected to survive after he was pulled into a working wood chipper. officials say the man is an arborist -- and his harnnss got stuck in tree limbs that were fed into the chipper. but his leg tripped the safety bar -- and he was able to shut were a few inches away from his head when the machine stopped. the vicicim still brokeehis leg -- ann suffered a head injury. the death of justice scalia also raises questions about how the court might decide a number of key cases this term, from abortion rights to affirmative action. we get more details on scalia's death and its impact from our justice correspondent, pete williams. as in the rest of the nation, hunters, of an apparent heart middle of the night,,so that was our first message for the family."

curiosity with guns. the gun test was a police and parent supervised test -- in which an unloaded and nonworring gun was placed next to a pile of toys. parents watched hidden cameras as several children picked the gun up -- and waved it around. the only two children who did about guns. this was an eye- opening test for everyone here at kwwl -- and since the story aired -- we've had many people reacout with their own stories. kwwl's olivia mancino shares one of those stories tonight. "lets have a word of prayer" a waterloo resident for decades, reverened campbell has built his life here. but by reason of a gun accident "the first thing i remember is 1969, campbell and his friend were laying with an airsoft rifle t his friends home. the situation quickly turned serious when hhs friend pulled out his father's real gun, and was like a hairpin trigger...boom" a hollow point bullet went through campbells arm and into
