system tracking in late tonight. winds will stay lightoday and we will have highs close to normal with upper 20s to mid 30s for your president's day. we stay mild tomorrow, but that snow could cause some headaches. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. this morning -- the political battle is underway -- over who will be the next supreme court justice. justice scalia died in his sleep over the weekend. there will be no autopsy. scalia w ws in texas on a hunting trip. he went to bed friday night and was found unresponsive saturday morning. he was a leading conservative

the president will nominate his successor -- but republicans say given that responsiblity. an iowa constitutional law expet says a newjustice should be later. several major cases involving affirmative action, abortion and labor issues are pending right now. with only eight members on the court -- that could lead to split decisions -- forcing the resolve issues. one iowa legal expert calls the democrats and republicans -- ironic. "if the question is, is our and democratic side.... republicans says obama is doing the thing he is supposed do. this woold be the heiit of irony." one iowan is on the list of potential supreme court nominees. we'll have that story later this morning -- on today in iowa. new this morning: a shooting investigation in iowa.

grove llt night. that's in wright county. authorities say one person was airlifted to des moines. another person is also being treated at the hospital. that's all the information we know at this point. continuing coverage... a campus bus driver... accused of hitting and killing an iowa state student... is in court later today. benjamin clague faces a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.& the victim -- urbana native malee jacobs -- was a freshmmn at iowa state. the hit and run happened in december. police used video from cyride buses as part of the investigation. this morning, more information could be releaseddbout a serious crash in dar county. three people were hurt in this pile-up on i-80 west -- near west branch. more than 30 cars were involved -- and traffic was backed up for hours. the iowa state patrol says a 5 car crash happened around noon. after that -- another crash -- this time involving 28 vehicles. "i passed it heading east on 80, were utill there all cracked ."

in this picture. -- another pile-up. 40 to 50 cars and trucks involved in this crash. it happened in indiana -- and weather was a factor. the road was icy and visibility was poor. several people were injured.. forty-eight people are safe this morning -- after being stranded on tram cars in new hampshire. there was a problem with the brake. two cars got stuck 40 feet off the ground. everyone was rescued safely. an iowa man is in the hospital crash. it happened west of boone along highway 30. the man was i a line of snowmobiles -- when his left front ski got caught -- and he crashed. he was air-lifted to the hospital. the accident is being investigated. stranded for a week in the desert, an oregon man says he survived on snow. the man is now recovering at a

police say he was driving his pick-up from arizona to oregon. his truck roke down in a remote area near reno, nevada. he stayeye in his truck -- drinking melted snow. a highway patrol trooper stumbled across him -- checking road conditions. more than 140 firefighters are needed to battle a verr big fire in brooklyn, new york. fire trucks are lined up down the street this morning in this neighborhood. it happened at a residential building. no one was hurt. firefighters now say they have the fire under control. they don't know what started it. a fire rips through almost 200 years of history in kentucc. this general store urvived floods, landslides and the great depression. it opened in 18-31, making it one of the oldest stores in the country. the owners say they can't replace the historic boards or antiques the fire destroyed. but they say they can replace the

this morning, the f-b-i is investigating after an explosive device was found under a rental car. it happened near an airport in albuquerque, new mexico. police say the car was returned overnight and when a mechanic put it up -- to reinspect it -- he saw the device. a bomb squad came in and took care of it. everything's back to normal now -- but police are trying to a former governor is under fire. police are investigating allegaaons that eliit spitzer attacked a woman. a woman claims spitzer choked her at a hotel. police are investigating it as a possible assault case. there's no word from spitzer. 900 million dollars in drugs are off the street -- and how it all went down -- is a big unusual. police in australia say the found the liquid meth smuggled in silicon b ba inserts -- and art supplies. they found much of it in a

facility. four people have been arrested. the liquid m mth could've bmade about ooe-thousand pounds of crystal meth. a drug call at a hotel ends in a shooting in iowa. it happened in urbandale near officers were called to a holiday inn on saturday morning. police say they found three people in the hotel lobby. that's when officers say one of the people pulled out a gun -- and started shooting at officers. police hen shot the suspectct-- who died. no names have been released. an eastern iowa minister is reaching out to schools to teach students about gun safety. this comes after kwwl aired a special report involving kids and their curiosity with guns last week. the gun test was a police and parent supervised test -- in which an unloaded and non-functinial gun -- was put next to a pile f toys. parents watched hidden cameras as several children picked the gun up -- and waved it around.

reverened willie campbell has lived in waterloo since the 1960's. he almost died -- when a friend of his shot him with an air rifle by accident. he was 10 years old at the time. the bullet went through "when he pulled the gun out it was like hairpin the stairs to tell the community" he says his goal is to go different schools in the area -- tell students his story and educate kids about gunn safety. a man in oregon is expected to survive after a scary accident. he was pulled into a wood chipper. he's an arborist -- and his harness got stuck in tree limm that were fed into the chipper. his leg tripped the safety bar -- and he was able to shut it off --

iowa tries to hold on tothe big ten -- but they'd have to beat a team -- that was the last one to knok off the hawks at carver. minnesota won in iowa city last year. this year, the golden gophers come in -- winless -- in the conference. the game was tight. first half -- iowa's jarrod uthoff from downtown. uthoff started cold, but got red hot at the end of the first half. the hawks up six at the break. gophers keeping it close -- nate mason drains the open jumper minnesota back within 5. peter jok then finds uthoff for the finish and a 10 point lead. but -- minnesota won't go away. iowa holds on down the stretch -- 75 - 71 over minnesota. jok with 27. uthoff 24. the fourth- ranked hawkeyes are alone at the top of the
