some areas of light fog today. we will end up with a variety of cloud cover over the next couple of days, to mid 30s with the light winds lead to a messy friday. i'll have details in a few minutes. decision 2016 coverage: this weekend could be make or break hillary clinton and bernie sanders face-off in nevada's democratic caucuses. but this morning we focus on the republicans. their primary is in south carolina. tracie potts has a preview. "i continue to believe mr. trump will not be president." president obama, on the republican frontrunner: "it's not hosting a talk show or a reality show." "it's hard." trump's response: "this man has done such a bad job, he has set us back so far. and for him to say that actually is a great compliment." trumps double-digit lead in our latest "nbc news survey monkey" national poll mirrors what's happening south carolina. he's got twice as much support as

for second with marco rubio. "this election has to be about making a difference." on the other hand, jeb bush - a distant fourth in palmetto state polls. "i will be a commander in chief not an agitator in chief." he insists no matter where he finishes, south carolina is not the end of his campaign. (a 4th place finish on saturday night, are we still going into nevada?) "i'll be there." ben carson and john kasich are also hoping for strong finish in south carolina. "this is an important state for us." this weekend's primary could further narrow what was once a crowded field of 17 republicans, now down to six. and counting. there's really not a lot of polling about the democrats in nevada, so the outcome there is anyone's guess. i'm tracie potts in washington, now back to you. a show of force or a show of support? depends on which side your on. u-s fighter jets are flying over

right now, north and south korea are in a standoff. south korea is concerned about recent missle tests by north korea. the u-s is defending its ally by sending in powerful warplanes -- which it's done before when there's been tension in that part of the world. back in eastern iowa -- a teacher faces charges -- accused of stealing medication. doug wilkinson of cedar falls was arrested this month in connection to missing prescription drugs at holmes junior high. wilkinson is a high school english teacher. he's accused of stealing student medication - including adderall. court records says security video allegedly shows him taking pills from the nurse's cabinet. "well i was shocked. i thought i heard everything, but yea i was we reached out to the school district -- which tells us this is a confidential personnel matter. continuing coverage this

investigation. a year after a teenager from vinton died, arrests are made. some of the charges are drug related. investigators say emma redlinger was accidently shot in the head last year after a friend mishandled a gun. six people were taken into custody yesterday. that includes robyn merchant who's facing a federal charge of providing a firearm to someone who shouldn't have one. a 17-year-old was also charged with involuntary manslaughter. others face charges for things like drug possession and lying to law enforcement. charges will not be filed after a man is shot twice following a domestic disturbance. authorities were called to sisley grove road northwest in linn county. the victim -- a 44- year-old man -- was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. investigators say the shooter was a child, believed to be acting in self- defense. the man has since been released from the hospital. apple is being told to open it up. a judge says the company must help the f-b-i break into the iphone

one of the shooters in the san bernardino massacre. the suspect and his wife died in a shootout with police after they shot and killed fourteen of his coworkers last december. since then investigators have not been able to get past apple's security features and unlock his phone. apple says it'll fight the judge's order. another developing in a hit and run investigation at iowa state. the trial is now set for the man accused. benjamin clague is pleading not guilty. his trial begins april fifth. investigators say he was driving a cy-ride bus when he hit and killed... emmalee jacobs -- a student at the university -- who grew up in urbana. clague is charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. it happened on campus in student loans are a part of life for many americans - and many struggle to pay them back. but have you ever heard of someone being arrested for unpaid loans?

says u-s marshals surrounded his home and arrested him. he says he had no idea why. it wasn't until the ride to jail he got an answer. an outstanding student loan. those guns for a student loan? how much? the judge will tell you, the judge wants to see you." aker says he had two others loans he paid off -- but claims he didn't know he still owed 15-hundred dollars. they rolled out a list of notices -- but aker says he didn't receive them. u-s marshals claim aker resisted arrest and the situation escalated when he told them he had a gun. they say in houston alone, about 15-hundred people have been identified for not addressing their student loans -- so warrants have been issued for their arrest. the owners of two michigan pancake restaurants are being ordered to pay up in a dispute over tips. they're accused of forcing workers to pay them two dollars an hour from their tips. apparently, this added up.

245- thousand dollars to more than 100 employees. an update now on a special school board election. it did not take long for a former school board member to a seat. joyce coil won the special election in cedar falls yesterday. she had served as president of the board until losing her in september. a seat opened up when jim brown resigned to run for mayor. new this morning -- an iowa theater is officially on the national register of historic places. the hardacre theatre in tipton has been around for more than a nonprofit bought it and has been working to fix it up and reopen it. this new historic designation could help move that process forward. a big lift for a bridge project. the black hawk county gaming association board approves a 750- thousand dollar grant. the grant will pay for about half

downtown waterloo --which is set to start in the spring. it includes reconstruction of the concrete railing under the canopy, fixing the walkway, and painting -- among other things. the bridge was built in 1976 - and hasn't been painted in about 20 years. the u-s military may see fewer injuries in years to come -- thanks a new project at the university of iowa. it's a virtual soldier program. it helps track the chances of someone being hurt during certain activities. "today what we have is really articificial intelligence, 3d modeling, better understanding of physiology, computational issues, putting all of this together." the program uses human models wearing special suits that show researchers what they can or cannot do. it's something we're taught when we're young... say thank you. but as michael schwanke shows us -- one boy's decision to use

mother wants to pull up to. "all i saw first was cop cars." "it's a scary scene to see and fell down and was unresponsive. as his mother elizabeth arrived...they were loading him into the ambulance. "one of the ems ladies that was on there said just jump in and i don't remember if i shut my car off." fast forward to this week. after some time in the hospital gage is doing better... and he's now giving back to emergency crews who were at the scene. "i gave one trooper a bag of candy." along with that bag of candy... this card...saying simply thank you. and the reason he's doing this... "because they helped me." "it will warm your heart and now a days with everything else going on in the world it's pretty neat to have a little kid recognize us." for gage and his mother...showing their appreciation was an easy thing to do. "it was kind of simple on our part because what they did was above and beyond to us. that's what we were appreciative about was that everyone came up and did what they could for

rare to see a reaction like this. a high school orchestra was supposed to be back in utah after playing in washington, dc. but a blast of ice and snow canceled their flight. so left with no hotel... no transportation... and a lot of time on their hands... the kids decided to do what they do best. "that was the weirdest place i've ever played." iowa state goes into overtime. the cyclones hoping to win a big game on the road. 13th ranked iowa state at 25th ranked baylor last night. early on -- the bears play above the rim. baylor up five --- 22-17. the cyclones would come right back. they would hit 11 threes on the night. this would be one. monte morris to george niang -- ties it up at 22. the game would also be tied at the end of regulation -- and from there, it was all baylor. the bears win 100-91. iowa state -- now oh and 3 in overtime games in the big 12 this season. when it rains, it pours. even when it's not raining. that's what happened during the olympic soccer qualifying tournament in houston. the sprinklers go off -- sparking a rain delay. a strange sight there...

stage. the westminster dog show wrapped up in new york. here's the judging for best in show. rumor has it, a german shepherd named "rumor" has a good chance. the four-year-old has already won more than one- hundred shows. but the judges say... "c-j", a german shorthaired pointer is the best in show. we all know the three most important words in real estate: location, location, location. check out the house that could be the poster child for that expression. this tiny home in vancouver -- just sold for almost two and a half million dollars. that's 80- thousand dollars more than the asking price. it's a three- bedroom, two- bathroom home -- put on the market two weeks ago. it's missing a few shingles, some of the walls are rotting, and it needs a paint job. but none of that really matters. it will likely be torn down, and a new home built in its place. two-point-four million dollars. that's quite a real estate market.

different the benefits can be. seventy-nine year old and determined... and that determination is one of the reasons we met this retired teacher... "i'm becoming of age where i'm starting to think about making things easier for those who are left behind because i come from a very small family." "my only sister" with no children, trudi started thinking about her sister, peggy. she wanted to make sure she'd be the beneficiary of her life insurance policy -- a policy she had paid premiums on, for years. "i've had it for, i'd say 30 years, or more" the policy was with prudential insurance company of america... through her work as a teacher. it also covered her husband, george, who passed away in the year 2000. and she did receive an insurance check after his
